Support Main Woes

So since day one I have been a support main. There is no better feeling than knowing you help someone else get kills and have that much power over the game. I direct and lead my adc to victory on a regular basis and enjoy it. But honestly...

It's the only role I feel I excel in. In order of my best to least -Support, Mid, Top, Jungle, ADC- Even when I am not playing support I play other champs in a support type feel. I love tanks especially, Singed is fun being able to absorb all that damage. Rammus, Zac especially. My problem is I can't carry. I can't go into games and get double and triple kills. Being hyper aggressive and able to do all that damage is not my playstyle. So now that i'm in ranked I need to be able to learn but I'm not sure where to start because levels 1-30 were pretty much all support. I don't play very popular champs most of the time. (for example I still have never used Yi or Katarina) Toplane its usually Vlad, Singed, Teemo. Mid is Ziggs. Jungle is Zac, Nautilus, and Shaco, ADC is.... No one i havent found one im good with yet, and support is Blitz, Braum, Soraka, Zilean, Thresh, Nami.

Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?

Don't worry about having to carry. If you can get support, you'll do great in ranked as a support. Also being good at support helps with a lot of things, like naturally buying wards and having better map awareness, at least if you do these things. Since I don't really know you or your playstyle, I'll just suggest try using Lulu top/mid and see how it goes with that? She is a support champion as well so I feel it would be in your champion pool and she functions the same basically, the main difference being you'd have more damage(AP) oriented items compared to support ones. If you're ahead, you will be a scary yordle who the enemy team will cower from and if you are behind, you basically fall back as a support.

There is no real "fix" so your best bet is to just practice practice practice. Just go in it with the expectation of getting roflstomped and it will be easy. Familiarize yourself with the champion you want to play and try their limits. Also try to gauge your opponent. If they are playing like they are scared of you, take advantage of them and bully the crap out of them. Another option is to watch pro streams of the role you want and try to learn somewhat from that if you can learn that way.

Well good luck.

I suggest after reading your entry that you play a really tanky top with a strong cc kit. For example singed, or cho, or even someone like nautilus. The big thing to realize if you do so is that your job IS NOT TO rush into enemies blindly. You will only do this if your the only one who can initiate. YOUR JOB as a tanky with lots of cc is to peel for your carries. Its your job to stop the lee sin or kha zhix from jumping all over your carries.

I've had this problem also as a support main, though my roles in best to worse are different. You really need to learn when you can take opportunities. Know when you're ahead, they're behind, and you can be hyper aggressive to snowball further (but have the mechanics to back it up).

Another ziggs player :DDD For me, I play mid/supp on an equal level, adc, top, jg my worst -_- Jinx and Caitlyn are really easy adcs so you should try them~ take advantage of your enemy's weakness, only roam if your team needs it and you're ahead of your opposing laner. Watch some streamers and see how they do it (how I learned to play ziggs orz)

try to lead from behind. dropping extra wards, pinging/calling out objectives can win games. clutch plays such as the perfect zilean ult and that needed heal are great. itemization to make sure you are effective lategame runes/masteries geared for support: are you dealing damage? should those pen marks be something else? Will going tank/or utility serve you better for masteries?

Support is about not screwing up a lot of the time... not pushing lane, being at the teamfight, dodging the skillshot and staying alive, playing cautiously so that your adc doesn't over extend, etc.

other advice... yeah make good calls & drop good wards & don't die to much.

From your post I'm guessing you hit lvl 30 recently. My advice is not to jump into ranked right away. Play games in team builder, and spam the same role and champ over and over until you learn what works and what doesn't. Once you have 2-3 champs in a couple different roles who you feel like you're really comfortable on, then head over to ranked.

It's hard for me to give you specific tips, because it varies from champion to champion, and role to role. Pay attention to what other people do in a role (how they position, who they attack, etc).

One of the most important things that you do in other roles and not as a support is csing. Working on your csing is VITAL to being able to carry. Here is a good place to start.

Yes I did hit level 30. I did my ten promos and ended up in silver 3. I have 2 full pages of runes and the only thing keeping me from more is just rune pages because I have a crap ton of lvl 3 runes

I'm only a bronzie but I was silver in season 2 when I was a support main. I personally recommend taking time to work with an adc main and practicing your combined CS, especially if you are running champs with relic shield as a starting item. The thing here is that you can improve your adc's cs with it and still be able to poke or tank as needed. The other thing I would consider is learning when to disengage. Many support players know full and well how to engage, but if the fight falls apart learning to disengage is important. I worked on this by setting up with an adc and a couple of bots, and the rule was to try to farm, and neither of you can kill the bots or tower. This means that you have to trade pokes without engaging and without killing them. This helps you learn what you can do to walk away when you find yourself over your head.

Easiest way to adjust into other roles is to practice them. Pick 1 or 2 champions for each and play those until you get comfortable with them. I'd say it's good to be proficient with at least 3 champions for every role.
