Interesting Dilema caused by Leaver Buster v Troll in Champ Select
First, I thought long about how to post this without sounding like I'm complaining about getting hit by a leaver buster penalty. The truth is that when the events I'll describe occurred I didn't know I'd receive a penalty, but after a night to think about it, I would have done the same thing. My issue is that the person who was the reason I got the penalty will stake away as officially he didn't do anything wrong.
The incident in question happened last night. I entered a normal/blind pick game and watched the chat for a second
Player 1: ADC Player 2: mid Player 3: jg (At this point I was thinking. "Good, I was hoping to play support") Everyone starts locking in champs. Mid: [I don't remember, but it was not a surprise pick] Player 3: [Rengar - good jungle pick] Player 1: [Caitlyn - Good ADC] Player 4 (who has not said a word in chat): [Jinx] (At this point I froze for a second. If player 4 ran to bot lane like so many ADC trolls do we'd have no one for top lane unless either the Rengar moved, or I took a top lane champ. But if I take a top lane and Jinx runs to top, Caitlyn unfairly has no support [or a champ that is not a natural support playing there]. I immediately typed a question) Me: "player 4" are you going to go top lane? (There was no response) Me: Guys, I can't select a champion unless I know what "player 4" plans on doing. I need to know if I go top or support.
In the end player 4 never said a word and I never picked a champ, allowing the game to boot everyone.
I agree I had to be punished. Since 8 players were unfairly punished as they had to wait through the champ selection while player 4 and I had our little Mexican standoff.
The problem is that player 4 will not be punished for his behavior. The only way I could have done anything would have been to make a pick, play as best I could and after the game report him, but my understanding is that a report of this type would only mean I don't get matched on the same team as him ever again. Not exactly useful and doesn't teach him to respect the other players during champ select.
I don't know a solution that works, but I do believe that some discussion would be useful. Its clear that there are player who don't respect the fact that this is a team game and their selfish actions can hurt others. In this case 8 players ended up having to wait through champ select and then another match making delay.
