While they can be addictive, and it can cause frustration and aggressive mood swings if you're not allowed to play, they're only minorly addictive. They're nowhere near as addictive as substances, and "coming off" video games is not only quicker, but not actually damaging to the body like coming off a substance can be. It's a mental fixation more than anything, and it can typically be corrected with time spent away from games - like a vacation, or a trip, or anything that gets you out of the house. I don't think they need to be classified as addictions like substances nor treated as such.

Also anxiety and depression play roles in this grey area, could this be a form of relief; perhaps to get away from their own thoughts?

It could be a form of therapy from my understanding/partaking in them.

"Ms. DeVries now resorts to forbidding her son, 24, to play games after 11 p.m."

Oh no, she had to resort to the dreaded...parenting!

Jokes aside this is an interesting topic. I vaguely remember this coming up when I was still in school too so it's not exactly new, just different people.

video games aren't addictive.

addicting video game mechanics are addictive.

there's a minor, but very important distinction that needs to be made about that fact. otherwise we're slapping a disgusting label on all video games. and we shouldnt do that.

video games are digital forms of entertainment. no one would argue that playing digital monopoly is addicting. nor would they say that playing the walking dead season 1 is addicting either.

in fact most decent games arent addicting at all because they have a beginning and an end. the only games that are addicting are games that are open ended with grind based mechanics and zero story closure to be found.

and the honest truth is that video games arent addicting to normal people. they're addicting to people who are susceptible to gambling and similar mechanics.

so i disagree with "THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION"

game addictions are signs of someone not being in control of their life to begin with.

my amateur advice is that if you think you have a gaming addiction then you probably have more serious issues than you realize.

As someone who doesn't really enjoy the game and kinda uninstall it frequently, what keeps me hooked (and sadly I don't even want to) is the release of new content pretty frequently. Such as new items, champions getting reworked, new champions, new game modes etc. Like who would have resisted when they saw Zoe 's teaser (my game was uninstalled for a month at that time) and I think THIS kind of strategy is what keeps players hooked

Life is a balance.

People can become too addicted to anything to the point where it negatively impacts their life. Someone could be addicted to things that are good for them, such as being addicted to work or working out, but if too many eggs are placed in one basket, it can have a negative toll on the other aspects of one's life. Likewise, gaming has some genuine mental benefits, but there are cons to every pro, and too much overindulgence without restraint is never a good thing, regardless if that thing is gaming or something else.

Marketing is marketing. Its no different or worse than any ad youll ever see.

The actor for superman almost missed getting the job because he wanted to play WOW. How many folks died playing everquest? no exaggeration, some folks literally starved to death / dehydration because they refused to stop playing.
