A Solution to U.R.F.'s problem
as I was reading comments on the URF related "Ask Riot"
The answer to figuring out how to deal with URF is as simple as Testing it out more. As URF is now it comes about at sporadic times, and nothing is ever learned due to this. instead more mistakes keep being made by Riot.
Riot you need to have URF come up more often as people in the comments of the Ask have said: You raised the point that you have immense drops in players after URF due to burn out, And the obvious reason is that due to the mode only coming up like once a year people spam it before it is gone.
The simple solution to this is to have the mode come up more often like every month or every 2 months or so. This way people know that they will be able to play it and it will come back. but as it is now people spam the mode because they have no idea when it will come back again.
Just like every other Featured game mode, people will play it and then after a while, they will go back to normals. I remember when Ascension came out me and my friends used to play it all the time. but then we realized that the mode was gonna keep coming back so we just decided Me: "hey Ascension is coming back wanna try it out?" Friend: "Nah not right now it will come back again at some point let's just do ranked this time I wanna climb the ladder"
If you have URF roll around often enough this is what the mode would potentially become, but you haven't tested this theory out at all and now URF has become a mess
The whole charm of URF was playing OP Champs in it, wacky combinations, or just checking out what a character would be like in it.
I remember the first URF and the joys of going Full AP Original
and just running around the map charging people into walls for fun. It was amazing.
or picking Full damage
and just spinning literally all game and deleting people.
The joy of this was that I had the choice to do it. ARURF just sucks all of that away. It feels less joyful to mess around because I am stuck with things I don't want. one of the things I was looking really forward to for the last 2 ARURFS was to play New champions that never had their time in URF before. but literally every time they either showed up for someone else or never at all.
There was no more fun in it because usually 1 team is either extremely broken while the other has like
in ARURF and Yasuo sucks in URF.
Edit: I didn't care much if I had lost in the original URF because at least I had fun doing the thing I wanted to do. the issue now with ARURF isn't losing. the issue is losing because you had to deal with something you didn't want. I had to play Reworked
Who i had never played before. It was such an unfun mess because Not only did i not like how she played, but i had to suffer through playing her and losing for a choice i did not make against a like Zed or something.
Making it a custom mode for the original URF is 1 solution that MANY people have suggested. and others have even suggested making Original URF and ARURF two separate queues. (jeez it feels like Solo and Dynamic queue's mess all over again)
There are so many solutions that you can test out Riot that you blindsided because you simply don't test the mode enough. and this could be so easily fixed if ya just did.
if you simply tested it enough, made the mode more frequent, and made the mode more accessible in the things you can do. THEN AND ONLY THEN SHOULD YOU TRY STUFF LIKE SNOWDOWN ARURF stuff like that will not be fun to people that have waited so LOOOOOOOONG for URF to come back only for it to be so limited. Stuff like that needs to be a treat after like... the mode is more common. once the mode becomes more common than you can start Mixing and matching stuff like ARAM and URF. Or other things like One for URF, HEXAURF, URFBOTS, etc. Man, it might even lead to ideas for making New and even more unique modes who knows.
TL;DR - My point is Riot You need to test URF more frequently. As you are handling it right now there is no possible way for you to collect the proper kind of data to see how to get the mode just right. You need to stop being so afraid of it and just experiment with it. Don't give up on it or half bake it like Snowdown URF or ARURF. you need to be more willing to give the mode a chance like the other modes. People only Binge it because they have no idea when it might come back again.
Edit: likely this post will go unnoticed but I just wanted to share my thoughts on a game mode that I always have looked forward to, but has become one of the biggest messes by far. due to the simple lack of trying it more often.
