As a Platinum 4, why am I being matched against a silver 1 in a ranked game?
We all know the answer to this by now. Rank is not necessarily an undeniable indicator of one’s skill level. Smurfs have always been a factor and now dynamic queue adds another element i.e. a different type of game balancing – one that has to account for premade teams when balancing games. That being said, I don’t want to play against a silver when I have tried hard to climb to my platinum position. It almost makes my own ranking a joke by offhandedly saying it is no different than a silver ranking.
Most likely what happened is a combination of things: this player was on a premade team and/or a smurf and/or had done really well in previous games which gave them a higher mmr than most other players who are silver 1. But this is one representation of how little rank means in the current state of league. I was in plat 5 a few games ago and played with/against high plat players and one diamond. I played a few more games and got promoted to plat 4 and I was matched with low golds and a high silver.
Like I said before I’m not baffled as to why this is happening; we all know why. I’m upset that it seems like rank means nothing these days. At the end of the day, I like to look at my rank and say “I earned this and it means something”. It’s a vain statement yes, but it’s a competitive (well it once was) video game and the ranked system is all about showing off your achievements. If I am playing ranked players that are two tiers below me I don’t feel very accomplished and my achievements mean very little if anything.
