Let's Talk About Urgot

Urgot my attention now. So you're buffing Urgot on the PBE I see Rito. A step in the right direction. But, let's talk real for a second There is pretty much only one aspect of Urgot's Kit that is holding him back from being a powerhouse pick or at the very least viable...

His ultimate. His ultimate is risky, Low range, channeled, and the benefits are extremely hard to reap. I mean why does this champion even have this ability? There are a couple solutions in terms of 'fixing' the ultimate...But I think Urgot deserves an entirely new ulti. To be honest, when I play Urgot, I don't even level his ultimate at 6. I rarely find a use for it just because it is so wonky and 60% of the time it can get me killed because of the swap. I mean how does his ultimate spell out 'Headsman's Pride' to you? Oh wow, I got slightly tankier stat wise and they got a measly 40% slow, but I have to put myself in Graves danger to do it. Not worth. I mean this champion is an EXECUTIONER in his lore that grafted a scythe and cannon onto his arms to let him continue to do his job in old age. I dont think switching places with someone spells that out to me. Know what executioners do? They kill people. They SENTENCE DEATH. THAT is what his ultimate should do. IT SHOULD DO DAMAGE AND KILL PEOPLE. why does he have a channeled, position switching, slowing ultimate? Doesn't that sound like something that belongs on a CONTROL MAGE? Is Urgot a CONTROL MAGE to you? No. He shoots blades and explosive acid at you. His ult NEEDS to be able to kill people, not just set them up to be killed(and potentially set yourself up to be killed too.)

Here are a few ideas I had:

**Death Embrace: **Urgot fires a spinning scythe blade at a target location. Enemies caught in the path take damage based on their missing health. The projectile stays at the location, dealing damage per second and slowing enemies heavily in a fixed area of effect. If Urgot moves out a set range of the blade, it returns to him and no longer deals damage/slows. in the area. Think a faster sivir boomerang blade that stayed at the end of its range spinning and dealing damage. This allows Urgot to secure kills for his team(and himself) that he definitely could not before. Getting hit by this can allow him to combo you with his e and q, making his kit more functional with itself. Also, it can be dodged since it's a skillshot, meaning it isnt a counterplay-less point and click cc ability which is relatively hit or miss in usefulness.

Next Life's Finale: Urgot shoots a massive explosive charge in a direction and can detonate it at any time during its travel. The missile will automatically explode at the end of its distance. Enemies caught in the explosion will take damage and be knocked away from the center of the explosion. Think Gragas's Ultimate, except it travels as a missile instead of being almost like an instant cast with barely any time to react. I'm thinking less displacement compared to Grag's ult. It takes a bit more skill to use, but can still be used to secure those kills that would normally escape you. This can help combo his e and q to again promote kit synergy.

Finally Unleash the End: Urgot charges up, reducing his movespeed by 50% and fires a massive laser in a cone, dealing damage and heavily slowing enemies. Can be charged while moving. The more you charge up, the more range and damage this ability deals. This is a bit like Kassadin's force pulse which requires a different kind of charging to be used. It allows for execution, has uses at minimum charge value, is useful in teamfights because it is aoe damage, and it's a massive laser beam what isn't to love about that? Sounds like the kind of killing Urgot would want to do with all his technical parts.

If anyone has any other ideas feel free to post them, along with any suggestions. I sincerely hope that Urgot gets a better ultimate, because to me, the rest of his kit is fun to use and play with/against. But that's my opinion...

Cheers! :)

Yeah, you know, I love Urgot, but it's pretty much like he doesn't have an ultimate. If they tripled the range, or made the switch something you set, then triggered (so you could target lock it, then position, then fire the swap at will) it would at least be useful once in a while, but it would be better if he just had a real ult of some kind. Like you, I have no idea where they even came up with such an useless, abstract power. He's an executioner. Nothing could make less sense than a power that swaps his position with his target.

"Yes, you're locked in the guillotine and I'm the one holding the lever. But wait! BOOM Now I'm in the guillotine and YOU are holding the lever! Tremble before my ultimate power!"

I don't really understand why so many people think his ultimate is useless. You and I both know that it makes Urgot VERY tanky, it suppresses the target and swaps positions and slow the enemy. That seems like a useful ability to me, maybe even a little overloaded. If you're looking at his ultimate as an engage ability, I think you're missing the point. To say his ultimate is useless is ignoring the inherent value in that unique utility.

You have to understand that Urgot is not going to scale through damage like another Marksman such as Vayne or Tristana (that's why he's known as an anti-carry). Urgot scales through utility, skirmish potential and teamfight potential. His kit is actually very cohesive if you can wrap your mind around what his utility can provide in practical situations.

Imagine you aren't a designated damage dealer, but a tanky bruiser who will reduce the enemy's damage and armor, give long range poke and slows while also providing an incredible peel for your carries. Hyperkinetic Position Reverser is the ULTIMATE peel for your carries. Did Katarina Shunpo into the middle of your team and and ult their faces? No problem, Urgot has an answer for that. Did Warwick jump on one of your ADC? Or Vi? Or Rengar? Simple. You ult them and peel them off of your carry while still remaining in a safe place (right next to your carry). This mechanic works in Urgot's favor because he can be positioned further from the team due to his extreme range and therefore creates more distance between your team and the invading enemy champion.

His ultimate is just fine. In fact, most of his kit is just fine. All he really needs is clearly defined scaling through itemization (they're working on changing his shield to scale with mana instead of AP) and provide some quality of life improvements such as increased attack animation speed and range (and projectile speed) on his autos and abilities. For icing on the cake? I'd love it if they allowed him to cast his abilities without interrupting his movement.

if it was useful enough then urgot wouldnt be so underplayed and considered one of the worst champions in the game. the rest of his kit is fine, his ulti has virtually NO synergy with the rest of his kit. He isnt tanky enough from the ult itself to survive placing himself in that position where he will usually get unloaded on.

I'll give you this much: his ult gives him the utility niche of being a counter initiator. but again, how does this coincide with Urgot's theme? He was an executioner. As an anti-carry, he should KILL carries not just put them in the position to be killed by someone else(and put yourself at risk in the process) I mean, what is an executioner really? He/she usually has a mask to give anonymity and can END a life without consequence because he is hired/ordered to do so.

IF HE IS NOT GOING TO SCALE LIKE A MARKSMAN, WHY IS HE LABELED AS A MARKSMAN? it doesnt make sense. Marksmen need to do damage. Every other marksmans ultimate does damage or grants them AD to make them do more damage with basic attacks. But urgot gets a little bit tankier? im sorry but defensive stats only mean so much when you have such shitty base health and late game when people have void staff and last whisper, where a % of your resists you gain are even more useless, his ultimate has even LESS value. It'd be one thing if say, he got DAMAGE REDUCTION FROM ALL SOURCES with that kind of ultimate, but then it'd be TOO good. it'd be the PERFECT engage tool if that was the case because any and all damage directed at him would be a % of its normal effectiveness, but instead, they give him raw defensive stats which paired with his low movespeed and low base health since he is a marksman, mean virtually nothing.

Like lets put it this way: what can urgot do that you can't easily put another champion in his place to do better? This shouldnt happen. Urgot is a creative opportunity to make a really unique champion in the sense that he's an anti carry carry. I'm not going to lie, I have carried like 3-4 games as urgot(which happened to be every time I played him) and I very seldom found myself using my ultimate unless it was like...4v2 or 5v3. And the range is just so damn short and the animation is so wonky looking like...Urgot deserves a bit better man. He deserves a new ultimate.

Hey man, I get it. He could be a lot better, I'm not arguing with you there. It's possible he could be more consistent with lore, but I don't know anything about that. There are bound to be thematic inconsistencies in lore and gameplay, and there are many in League.

I mean look at Twitch. They say he's a plague rat, but he uses venom. Like, why can't his passive be Deadly Infection instead of Deadly Venom? Or, why can't he throw a Rot Cask instead of a Venom Cask? And Contaminate? I mean come on Rito, in order to use that ability his enemy has to already be affected by this "venom" so what is he doing, like re-contaminating someone?

My point is that I'm playing devil's advocate to your initial post because it doesn't give respect to the synergy his kit does possess. While it may not be as good as it could be, it is still there and I think I make a pretty good argument for that.

I don't think twitch is a great example...With twitch, he shoots infected arrows and his whole poison/infection theme is present throughout his kit in some way. Even his ulti lets his spread his 'infection' through multiple people as the arrows pierce through enemies.

Of course you can make an argument for its uses, because everyone's kit and set of abilities and attack range/attack speed has a function or a use. But that doesn't mean it is effective or efficient or that it has synergy with the rest of their abilities.

For example, you said urgot's ulti is the ULTIMATE peel for your carries...but that's simply not true, because it can ALSO put your carries in danger if he ulti's their tank or ulti's their potential initiator thinking they could place them in a position to get blown up...but it can very easily backfire. and given the short range on it, you'd think it'd be more effective at its job. But it isn't. It's almost like, in comparison to the other champions on your team, you don't have an ultimate. You only have your three basic abilities really, because his ulti is INCREDIBLY risky and shockingly not equivalent in terms of reward.. that's my point, that I would find myself not even putting points in my ultimate at level 6. it's literally more beneficial to me to have that extra point in his shield or his q.

Yeah, sure, QOL improvements would help his viability. But the ROOT of the problem is his kit. SPECIFICALLY the ONE part of his kit that just DOESN'T make ANY sense in comparison to everything else. I mean, if you really wanted to 'keep' his ultimate, it should be the same, channeled suppression, only no switch. Only the enemy is pulled to you. THAT would make it useful and viable and incredible for pick potential and make it make more sense with his kit still. Placing an enemy in position to be executed. this allows him to more easily land his q, his e... if his e is already on them he can continue to spam q homing onto them... if none of my changes work and they wanted to keep him the 'same' then THAT'S what they should do with his ulti. Suppression and reposition=yes. Swapping with the enemy...no.

I just had an idea! At the very least, make Q apply on hit effects first of all. This opens up critbuild paths for urgot and lifesteal maximizing paths as well and allows him to potentially be an ad ranged caster(which kinda fits urgot to be honest. he's always felt like a techmaturge physical caster that shoots blades, amiright?) also, make his ultimate uninterruptable, as in, he cannot be disabled for the duration of the channel. I realize it's a one second channel only, but in teamfights that one second matters because you can't do anything else but you are wide open to being wrecked by enemy cc/damage in the meantime. also, lets consider giving the slow an increase in duration by at least a second, or make it harsher. because the ability itself is just...lackluster. It's hardly an ultimate at all to be honest. Ultimates should define champions. Zed's marked for death, nami's tidal wave, kennen's eye of the storm, even Teemo's mushrooms define him as a satan worshiping, evil and destructive force of death and cruelty incarnate. Urgot's....doesn't.

I don't even think Riot knows what they want Urgot to be. So now is the time to decide! With a few small changes/QoL buffs, or a few big sizable changes, you can shape Urgot to be, well, whatever you want Riot. I just know that you have a base kit which is pretty fun to play and is tied together with a pretty wonky ultimate. Urgot could be a ranged AD Caster(which only exists in Jayce's cannon form and I guess Ezreal right now to my knowledge) which could be fun. He could be a tanky AD ranged mana bruiser with the current direction you might be taking him(I think mana scaling is fun, tbh. Even though Ryze was a huge problem for awhile I had so much fun playing him because comboing is fun...just not for your opponents.) You could even, with the right changes, use him as a niche counter initiator/gank stopper/counter diver(which he kind of already is already) but make him better at it and make it more rewarding to do so, instead of likely having to burn flash to escape a bombardment of enemy spells/attacks coming your way or hoping to god your shield and resistance stats from your ultimate let you live. Cmon Riot! You can do it! :D
