The amount of essence I have doesn't really relate to whether or not I've mastered a champ, does it? This might just be me, but I'd rather just have to get more mastery tokens. At least then I'd know my mastery levels are entirely the result of my actual mastery.
In the patch coming up (6.11) we should be able to buy random champion shards. They said it'll cost like 1700 IP for it, so we can at least get champion shards for IP to help make it easier for us to get rank 6 and 7.

Currently, I have earned enough mastery 6 tokens for 7 champions. However, I haven't picked up a single key fragment in over 3 weeks and have no champion shards remaining and no blue essence. I feel like I'm screwed by the system and can't get my emote because I'm straight up unlucky.
Its just Riot failing to find a use for people who have all the champions who cant do anything with the blue shards they get. Instead of a way to turn champ shards into orange essense for more skins they decided it would be better to gain champion mastery through an RNG system. That way they can say "hey look now those champ shards arent useless" I'm now able to get lvl 6 on Zyra and Talon but because it takes so long to get chest and keys and even after i get them im not Garenteed a champ shard, AND even if i was it takes 3 to get the 500 blue essense id need for lvl 6 so 6 shards to get my 2 lvl 6s..... im stuck on lvl 5 with both of them. Same reason they change the free 400 RP they used to give players to a free hextech chest; gotta maximize those profit margins right?
I've got four rank 6 tokens (for two different champions) just sitting on my hextech inventory because I refuse to buy more boxes... And I've had shit luck with getting keys despite an S score almost every game (from myself or teammates).
I would have three rank 7 champions by now if not for that damn blue essence.
People complained that blue essence was useless once you owned all the champs. Also, Riot is trying to encourage people to spend more money on their slot machine (AKA: Hextech crafting). The way they set it up accomplishes both things. It's an encouragement to give them more of your money... AND it's a thing that makes blue essence "useful".
Do what I do. Stop caring. The mastery icon does nothing. It's just fluff and padding. If you even see it in a match it's because you're being a jerk and BMing your enemy. Don't be a jerk. Just say no.
The only solution is to stop believing that champion mastery has nothing to do with how good you are with the champion.
If you really want to know why, it's to prevent people who payed for chests and don't care about mastery. People complained about blue essence not having any real point after unlocking all the characters. So this makes it have purpose ~.^
Yes, it kinda does. The fact that if you get an S(+/-) continuously, correlates that you do well in games. This in return, gives you boxes and keys which will randomly drop shards etc etc. It's done as a time factor. I can't tell you how many "level 5 masterys" I see that don't even know how to cs properly.
