PSA: Off-Meta Picks
The reason off-meta picks don't work isn't because you don't know how to play it, it's because your teammates don't know how to play with it.
Then someone in the pro-scene picks something off-meta as a counter, a few people see how it's played (note: they don't really care what it's being used for > counter pick) and decide to start using it. This brings it to light and people begin to understand how to play with it as it gains popularity in solo q and on streams.
How can this be solved? Well, it can't. It's best to play off-meta things when you're duo or playing in a group so that the majority of players on your team understand how it's to be played with.
Do we want innovation? Yes, but you're not reinventing bot lane with 2 mages when your mid, jungler and top are all AP squishies.
Having a wide champion pool to serve multiple scenarios is the best way to get a variety of picks played if you don't main a single champion or style. That and well, Riot introducing voice comms in lobby/game and/or adding a chat function in the loading screen so that people can discuss strategy before doing so in a brush level 1 and being pounced on by the enemy team who went for the straight invade.
Just something to think about.

or
who used to be meta but are now off-meta picks?
Couldn't the same argument be used to say the enemy won't know how to play against them then, so it would either balance out or put things in your favor?
