Someone mind explaining LP gain/loss?

I had a game where I won 20 LP and then followed up the next win with 18 LP gain. I thought the LP gain only shortened when you won a game expected of you to win. (extreme example : golds beating bronze gaining 10 LP versus bronze beating golds gaining 20 LP.)

So what I'm asking is if I was gaining 20 LP meaning it was not expected that I would win it, why was my next game after it only 18 LP?

You get more LP if your ELO is higher than your current ranking. If you won a game, your ranking increased, so the difference between it and your MMR decreased (your MMR isn't lower than it because than you would be getting like 10 LP per game). Therefore, you gained less LP.
