Should I Start Ranked

Okay, so I just hit level 30 and here is the big question that everyone asks: should I start playing ranked? I know that the first answer is usually to just wait a little while, but I want to be sure. So please hear me out on my current situation. So, I feel like I genuinely am at a higher skill rating then my peers where I stand. As proof, I have an 80% normals win rate last time I checked, which was yesterday. I know who every champion is and almost all of their abilities (the exceptions are champs that haven't been played ever since I started around the beginning of the summer). I have, from what I know, a fairly good game knowledge compared to my peers. I'm pretty sure I'm playing around the bronze to silver-ish area right now. The only thing that's really holding me back would be having two designated champions for each role and knowing them inside and out. However, I do have two designated champions for each role that I would say I am actually able to play at at proficient level. I want to be sure that I'm not rushing into things without any second opinions on something like this. Finally, I want to be say that I'm not trying to sound like a special snowflake who is a god amongst men, I just want to state my circumstances that I believe are unique to me.

Thanks, MakatoKun

I think it depends. I started about 2/3 a year ago and started rank after being lv 30 for over 3-4 months. Upon doing so i realized that a) its a lot more toxic than norms so you should be prepared for that. and b) its not really harder at all. So ya you can start ranked it won't really turn out badly but you might find it decidedly less fun than norms.

Edit: You could always just do promotionals to see were you are then decide wether you want to continue after that

There's no reason for anyone not to start ranked at level 30. If you succeed, you'll learn. If you fail, you'll learn more (hopefully).

Did not look to see how many normal wins you have but 80% seems way too high. There are so many champs in this game now so I guess the first thing you want to do is know what each champ kinda does and have a few for each role (which is sounds like you do). Honestly, if you like the game and are competitive you might as well play ranked. You will learn some things once you get to your correct elo. At least right now you are guaranteed to be placed silver or higher. To be honest I am unsure if getting a preseason rank before season starts is better or not. I think it probably is, as it seems placement matches now place players fairly high. So I would do it and see how you like it. Season 6 starts in roughly a moth (most likely) so you will have to do placements again, but this would give you the option of seeing how much you like it before the new season starts.

Plus ranked increases ones tolerance towards toxicity as there is plenty, especially at low elos. Just don't let it overwhelm you.

I was always told to start ranked when you have enough champions so you can play 3-5 of them in each role, and have about 600 normal wins. However, after playing ranked for about 3 years...just start when you feel ready. Ranked is a place where you can test your true skill and climb too where you belong in the game. If you are being paired with bronze/silvers...all i have to tell you is to get ready for some major toxicity. Other than that, start when you feel you are ready. if you do well you will get where you belong, if you don't you will still get where you belong and hopefully learn something new about the game.

Get runes. After that, feel free to start.

I pretty much only play ranked now. I find it to be the most fun, with a similar or improved toxicity level from normals, honestly. If you're like me....

  • play for fun
  • winning is fun
  • toxic not worth, be nice
  • not pro, but play hard

then there's no reason not to. I take my game seriously, but not so seriously that I hate on people. My real life is still more important.

I've never understood why people make a big deal about ranked play. It's just play for people who want to actually compete. Friendly competition is fun for me, win or lose. As long as you think that way, you'll have fun in ranked. And having fun is your goal here, yeah?

It's fine to start ranked, just realize that ranked placements are not always perfect. You might go on a losing streak after getting placed until you reach your true elo. Once you hit rock bottom you can start improving and yes you will probably be bronze (it happens to the best of us). The good news is it's easy to get to silver with a little effort and a desire to find your own mistakes.

Play your provisionals before the ranks reset to find out where you stand. If you land under bronze 2, you should wait a bit and practice more.

  1. Do you have full Tier 3 runes that allow you to play both AP and AD champions? If not then you probably should hold off on ranked.
  2. Your CS scores when you play non-support are very erratic. Sometimes they are decent and sometimes they are horrible. Like it honestly looks like multiple people are playing your account it varies so much. You need to practice last hitting in custom games and becoming more consistent. Your goal should be 35 CS by 5 minutes.
  3. Your damage to champions is extremely low for the champions you are playing. When you are playing assassins like Yasuo and Zed your damage is some of the lowest in the game. I'm not sure exactly why that is but I would download a replay program like SkinSpotlights Replay and try to figure out why your damage to champions is so low before jumping into ranked.
  4. If you don't care about your ranking then there's no reason to delay. Sure you might get put in bronze but who cares? If you find playing ranked is fun then play ranked. If it isn't fun then don't play ranked.

Feel free to check out my videos. I'm silver so if you think you can play at my ability level then there's no reason not to jump into ranked. Hope that helps. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2EZm50wNGmfJal7IHM_b8Q
