Unpopular Opinion: Mages aren’t that op

“Void staff gives 40% magic pen” “Mages get so much cdr” “Mages have too much burst” “Mage items are too cheap”

All correct. Mages are easily the strongest right now. Why? Magic resistance sucks

We have spirit visage, adaptive helm, abyssal mask, and gargoyle stone plate (technically) for items that give magic resistance and health. 4 items tanks and bruisers can buy to fight against mages. What item gives the most magic resistance? Banshees veil. An ap item that gives a spell shield.

Magic resistance tank items are pretty underwhelming. Take my favorite champion: Shen. He can’t buy abyssal because it gives mana and that is a waste on him. He has no healing (rip vorpal blade) so spirit visage passive isn’t effective on him unless you have a healer on the team. You can go gargoyle stone plate, except it just isn’t good. So you have adaptive helm left. Big problem with that: taking 20% less damage from a spell when it hits you again within 4 seconds isn’t good at all. Hiemer turrets are less damaging I guess. Teemo shrooms are less of a issue. Karthus just does 20% less damage with E and Q. And that’s all the ones I can get off the top of my head. For every other mage they kill you with 1 use of each spell, so the passive is useless.

There are not enough defense magic resistance items. AP items have so much diversity, but tank items are left in place he dust. Now Zzrot is getting removed so goodbye another defensive item for tanks. But it’s not just tanks that suffer lacking magic res items

I feel so bad for ADCs. Phantom dancer and maw are pretty much a necessity against burst mages if you want to live past 4 seconds into a fight. Build diversity is slowly dying as riot removes more items than they make.

My biggest problem is that riot is removing zzrot for not being used, but Shurelyas gets a rework for not being used? Ok riot.

You know, just because Hashinshin says something is OP doesn't mean its true or even a popular opinion.

I think you are significantly undervaluing Adaptive Helm. Just going to list out a few champs/abilities that are currently meaningfully impacted by Adaptive Helm passive. Remember it's not just spells, but also magic effects, which means it impacts on hit damage.

Kai Sa passive Kog Maw passive Casseopia Q-W-E Viktor E-R Malzahar E-R Syndra R Sylas' auto passive and Q Akali's dashes

Also if we're specifically talking about bruisers, a lot of them have built in healing like renek, but Shen specifically wants to build hydra, which would make Spirit Visage have some value. Additionally, tanks always have the option of coupling Warmogs with visage as well.

The bigger problem with tanks is that in the current state of the game they are perpetually behind. Maybe they want armor early, cuz of Quiyana mid. But they need to build MR cuz they lanign against Vlad top. So when lane phase breaks down the only armor they have is like ninja tabi. So in order to really become a vanguard tank they need like an armor item, a mr item, and then a third item with HP on it. By this time a lot of characters are already snowballing. And then tanks will eventually get outscaled by damage. So they are slow starters, and have this tiny window to find success through team fights before they get outscaled.

My 2 cents is that tanks were ruined when Riot changed the game to be so focused on fighting early on that you HAD to be able to deal meaningful damage early to be successful. So that meant tanks had to deal damage, which is why they were OP for a while. Then tank damage and waveclear got nerfed and they just disappeared all together. I've said this many times before, but the way to make tanks viable in a healthy way is to give them enough damage/waveclear otobe useful if they receive a gank and to effectively CS. But that's it. Instead of letting them have early game damage, we need to let them start functioning as a true front line vanguard at like 1.5 items
