When did Lissandra become popular?

I was just wondering as to when she became "OP" status? Previously she was even considered very weak (for some unknown reason) despite being a champion with almost no weaknesses. I mean she has as much CC as Janna, the damage of Annie, and the mobility of Zed.

if you call an ability with 20 second cooldown mobility....

shes an anti assassin. assassins are good right now. there's your answer.

She really does very little damage compared to most AP carries, and nowhere near Annie's. Not sure why you would compare those two.

Lissandra's highest scaling ability is her ult with 70%. Tibbers has 80% scaling with about the same AOE, but he sticks around and smacks people while dealing AOE. Annie also has 80% scaling on her other two abilities where Lissandra has 65% and 40% scaling on her Q and W, respectively. Not to mention Annie has higher base damage across the board.

She's been picked consistently, because Zed is popular. Lissandra plays decently against Zed.

Low level play + matchup ignorance = "OMG SO OP!"

Lissandra has always been popular (but recently a few Pros started playing her in competitive play) which probably propelled her to the "meta" and you see her more often.

CC as Janna

Lissandra is arguably a CC queen since 3 of her attacks have some sort of CC. For this, I'd say she's different from Janna since her CC's are more about combo instead of supporting.

the damage of Annie

I would say Annie provides much more damage output. Annie is a burst mage AP in which she has a series of combo to burst her opponent down coupled with Tibbers and her shield. Lissandra does not have the same AP ratio in her attacks as Annie which makes Lissandra's nuking capability weaker unless she gets a good amount of AP items to compensate.

the mobility of Zed.

Lissandra has the slowest projectile for mobility-type-moves. Lee Sin probably has the fastest. And Le Blanc and Zed has instantaneous speed in mobility (in their respective skills) If you compare Lissandra to those other types of champs, she's not very mobile at all BUT has enough mobility kit for initiation.

Verdict: She's not OP, but skilled players are using her and now she's in the meta.

a champion with almost no weaknesses.

Incredibly short range (except for E), very little mobility (except for E), lowest mana regen of any mage in the game, massive mana cost on her supposed-to-be-spammable Q, not a lot of ways to exert her influence without putting herself in direct danger.

If you can manage her E properly then you're already ahead, but it has a huge cooldown and so many of her options revolve around it that it creates massive windows where she's basically window dressing unless your team knows how to play around you (which historically hasn't been the case, but maybe people are starting to learn?)

Simple answer is crowd control. Lots of Crowd control, plus initiation.

Her weaknesses are the kamikaze nature of her engage (every "dive into the enemy team and fight at close range" champ has problems with risk here), her very low range (there's a reason she's usually top) and her poor burst. You can't compare her damage to that of an AP carry's because it really isn't there. If she gets really ahead then sure but she just doesn't scale like most mages do.

Her strengths are massive self-peel and excellence at locking down a target, both of which are VERY valuable in an assassin meta because she can both save herself from them and prevent them doing damage. But it doesn't make her too powerful or anything, it's just that she fits the meta hugely.

And she gets this massive ban rate becauses assassin mains don't want someone ruining their fun, lol.

it's because she so easily punishes assassins, while remaining mana efficient in a world where mana regeneration isn't what it used to be. Her damage is sub par, but that's not why you pick her.

Lissandra is a mage who has control, and that is a valuable asset to have

Lissandra has always been popular, and has always been a really fun pick. She just started hitting "Meta" status when a few LCS players decided to show off their mechanics.

That's how it usually goes.

Another reason why she has been brought to popularity is how she has Amumu-status level of CC, and can completely dick-slap all assassins with her kit. Assassins being one of the most popular picks right now.

I had her when she was first released. i refunded her because she was so terrible of a champ upon her release.

She deals with assassins pretty well given that she has both point and click CC and enough damage to take advantage of her own CC. Athenes got nerfed at the start of the season which I imagine helped in mid lane a bit. That bug that put her on the global ban list for professional play has been resolved and finally Ryze got nerfed which opened up a ranged top cancer position.
