Tristana vs. Graves

Her base damage numbers are weaker than Graves's, and even though her E scales better with bonus AD than his Q does, he's got the AD ratio on the ult to compensate.

His AoE slow has added utility, hers adds extra damage instead, but when used as a slow puts Tristana in melee range, which seems slightly counterproductive for a longrange squishy ADC.

She gets more attack speed for a longer period of time, but the cooldown on her Q is so long. Graves gets a dash combined with a small amount of attack speed on a short cooldown that gets shorter when you basic attack enemies.

I think in a vacuum, with equivalent items, a Tristana could easily outplay a Graves and win the 1v1, but in real teamfights, especially teamfights with really mobile tanks like Sejuani or Nautilus, Graves seems capable of safely throwing around more damage with his spells and disruption, while Tristana seems like she'd transition into more of a dedicated assassin, though her spell damage seems lacking for such.

There aren't a lot of situations I'd want to pick Tristana over Graves. Thoughts?

Graves is an early-mid game bully. His abilities have high damage, but fall off in comparison to autoattacks later in the game. While he's a bit beefier than most ADCs, he has shorter attack range than most ADCs and the passive resistances aren't that useful later in the game, since you will be blown up anyways. His W and E are great later in the game though, since vision denial and the low CD on his dash/attack speed buff is magnificent.

Tristana has a decent early game (level 6 all-in used to be pretty good, not sure if that changed), a weak mid-game, and a strong late-game. Later in the game, Tristana outshines many other ADCs for several reasons:

  • jump resets on kills/assists
  • high attack range (passive)
  • ultimate for self-peel

I'm not sure why you think Tristana would transition to an assassin, however she primarily uses her abilities for protection instead of damage. She's pretty much a dedicated autoattacker later in the game, with her R used for peel and her W used for repositioning. I would highly recommend not jumping on enemy champions later in the game, since that pretty much invalidates her range and safety.

yeah, well, that's the problem i've been having i suppose. there's always a jinx or a draven or something that's going to kill me in two hits, even with the peel she's got.

If this is during laning, then Draven and Jinx are strong early-game and mid-game champions while Tristana is a weak one. You should be trying to avoid fights by farming safely, being protected by your support, and avoiding unfavouable trades. Tristana has good range, so you should be able to either shove them undertower or farm just outside your own tower. If you are going to shove, invest in deep wards.

If this is during mid-game to late-game teamfights, then it's probably more of a positioning issue. During teamfights, if you and your team are positioned properly, you shouldn't really be in a position for Jinx or Draven to hit you. After people start dying and the teamfight devolves to chaos it can be an issue, but Tristana should be able to escape or kill many enemies if she has Q, W, or R off cooldown.

Tristana lost some of her insane late-game strength, and exchanged it to smooth out her mid-game curve.

I still like the playstyle, and she's still a really safe marksman. And the new explosive charge is pretty nice.
