Why does Orianna feel so useless when even or behind?

Whenever I play Ori she feels like a really nice champ. Tons of stuff to do and lots of ways to do them. But I can't shake off the feeling that im dragging my team down even when ahead. I win lane but still feel really powerless untill I get around the 35 minute mark. I know that she is a really good laner and a good teamfighter but I feel she is a pretty weird champion. Anyone else feel this way?

Because its a utility mid. You provide peel in the form of a shield and the speed up/slow down ball mechanic. Multiple man ults are also devastating. It's a difficult champion because her strengths aren't very apparent at first, but like anything the more you play it the better you get at the champion.

I wouldn't agree with useless, but she definitely relies on items to do well. At about 10 or 15 minutes she really hits her stride imo.

I also think Orianna is in need of buffs, if that was your point. She is supposed to be helpful even when behind but really isn't.

Perhaps you aren't using her to her full potential. If you win lane, you should be wrecking people left and right for your team.

As a mid laner, once you get an item or two in, your QW does rip people's life easily. Are you harassing enemies when you get a chance?

While Orianna is a bit more team dependent, she's not helpless as a mage herself as she can zone the field, using her ball. She works best if your team has an initiator. E your teammate, watch them dive, then RW for wombo combo devastation.
