Vel Koz - So enjoyable if you stick with it.

I've got to say how much I enjoy this champ.....It took me a good long time and many discouraging matches, but I finally have started being productive with this champion and helping my team. I'm just an average player at best and mostly play solo-que. But here is what I've learned about Vel Koz:

  1. Mid - Because of my superior wave clear, range and true damage, I can hang with anybody generally without feeding. I may not win the lane against champs like LB, Yasou , Talon and Zed as I am to squishy to handle their all-in. But I can generally hold the lane until my team resolves their lanes and come to help.

  2. Because my abilities are skill shots and vel is so squishy, it took me a long time to develop the poise to use my abilities effectively in team fights. However, once I got the hang of it, Vel is so effective at melting opponents in team fights and providing the opportunities for my fighters and ADC to secure a lot of kills.

  3. Vel's ult is fantastically fun. In lane teamfights there is a lot a room to maneuver so I use his ult to pic off escapers who think they have made it out of harms way. I've found in late game that makes a huge difference. In jungle I use it to melt multiple opponents from the back line to ensure my team has its best chance to finish the fight.

  4. Support Vel so fun because his Q is really effective at kiting and peeling (E) for my adc.

  5. Kills and assists are important, but I have found with Vel that those stats may not tell the whole story. Because of Vel's damage and range, I've noticed opponents change behavior when Vel is on the back line. Especially if they have been previously touched by his ult. This has provided some opportunities for my team to take advantage of in certain situations.

  6. Stealing dragon/baron with the ult very fun! :)

I think Vel gets a bad rap because a lot of people don't hang with him long enough to appreciate the nuance of his kit. In truth I have limited experience with other mid-laners because I chose to stick with Vel and really try to learn him well, so I am aware there are other champs out there who do individual things better. However, his combination of range and damage really really make this champ fun. Just wanted to share that. Any tips would be appreciated, as, like I said, I am average at best and have lots more learning to do.

GLHF :)

I always end up laughing hysterically when I build item 3116 & item 3151 and then ult their team with Velkoz .

Yes! Eyeballs unite!

He's one of my mains and I've always played him mid.

He took me all the way through gold :)

Build path I use:

athenes/morello (against ap/ad respectively), boots, ludens, liandry, void, rylai

or

athenes/morello (against ap/ad respectively), boots, liandry, void, rabadon, rylai

Try not to draw too much attention to him. A bunch of sudden extra attention to strong but underplayed champs tends to lead to nerfs.

Shut up. No one must know about him.

Unfortunately, my team doesn't seem to understand their place when I play Vel'koz. I just want to tell them "Everyone just bodyblock the enemies so they can't get to me while I channel my ult. Yes, even the adc. I have enough damage to kill all 5 of them myself, so if you can just slow them down for even 1 second while they kill you it'll be worth."

Oh gosh finally , someone likes my loomynarty eye :')

Vel'Koz is EXTREMELY FUN , you can't have a bad game with Vel'Koz xD Also bursting some cherry juice to that poor weak mages and assassins (Leblanc Ahri KatarinaZed Yasuo ) is fun too ^^

Vel'Koz.

The only mage that isn't constantly getting nerfed/buffed over items.

I love vel'Koz mainly because he is apparently the most balanced champion in the game. I mean when was the last time he was touched in a patch?

Kitten of Evil12/10/2015, 6:25:00 PM3 votes

My absolute favorite thing about Vel is that his ult goes through Yasuo's Windwall. A good Yasuo knows this, but a lot of the ones I play against don't. I also love playing mind games with Q.

I like a lot of immobile mages, but there's a reason Vel is my most-played champ. He's so satisfying to play, and people often underestimate him. I never feel useless as Vel, because of his true damage procs and very high base damages.

I'm a Vel'Koz main that really only plays him in ranked. He is one of the most fun champions I have ever played. I can win any match up with him because I understand when to use my abilities and when not to. I truly hear Riot Meddler when he says he wants to make some "unique changes" but I think Vel is unique enough :(.

You will lose a LOT before you start getting anywhere with him. Definitely not an easy champ to learn or understand at first and still very hard to master in a lot of matchups, but absolutely very fun and a high risk/reward payoff when you get it right.

this is why i despise auto attacking based champions. all champions should feel like this when you play them for an extended period of time, except there's few that actually do. champions shouldn't be so easy to play and have such a binary playstyle across the whole roster

Big Lincoln12/10/2015, 4:25:06 PM1 votes

honestly I'm surprised he got by without nerfs, he's a huge beneficiary of the pre-season changes

he's definitely very fun, I appreciate he has variety in which lane to work from

So youre one of those who play sup vel, I had one a game or two ago on the enemy team. Do you build normal mid build or a sup build with like frost queen in it? I build my mage sup's mid build of magic pen. Just curious

Man, Vel'koz has been getting a lot of attention recently lol.

A good piece of advice I like to give is if you land your Q, quickly follow up with EW or WE to massively chunk the opponent. It's a small window, 1-2 seconds, so you have to be a bit preemptive about it. Once you get this simple trick mastered, every time you land a Q you'll easily deal 50% of their max HP. I've been playing Vel'koz since his release, and had a 90% winrate with him last season. Once you have your ult, it's a guaranteed kill if you land your Q, as you'll proc your passive three times with a full rotation.

vel'koz is an awesome glass cannon.

Support Vel'Koz, my one true love.

I do enjoy a good Velkoz from time to time. It's awesome that he's a killer blind pick too.

I had fun with him on release... recently whenever I've played him I've had horrendous problems with minion block (I think) cancelling my autos somehow. Also the fact that minions seem to sidestep W whenever I use it.

That being said he has an excellent voice and his base skin animations are fantastic. Hail the Space Eye.

MacDeath12/10/2015, 4:57:12 PM1 votes

He is like more destructive Lux. Somehow. Isn't he?
