Yorick Mori [Champion rework idea]

#Why does Yoric need a rework? To me Yorick seems like a very linear and simple champion. You play him once and you've seen it all. You can't really utilize his kit in creative ways or to make amazing plays. Whenever he gets a kill it's just like "meh, Yorick got a kill". Nothing really grand about his play style either.

#What is Yoric all about? Yorick is an undead lump of meat who raises ghouls to fight for him. So he's kind of like a necromancer. He's also very tanky looking. I get the vibe from his looks that he's not supposed to be a hand on hand fighter but can still withstand some punishment. A ghoul raiser who uses his ghouls offensively and is able to tank damage himself.

#My idea Well since Yorick is all about ghouls I thought of few different possibilities where his theme could carry him. A commander of an undead army or a ghoul pet owner. I really dslike the ghoul army idea, since I think it's more like an emperors job to command a lot of folk (chough Azir). And I do think it would be kinda "cute" if Yorick had a single ghoul pet who he could control. Like a partner.

So here's an idea what I think might be an interesting ability kit for the grave digger:

Yorick is now a ranged champion (yeah, I know...), summoning ghoul hands from the ground to deal damage to enemy target.

Passive - Yorick is being followed by a ghoul who starts attacking and following the target of Yorick's auto attack. If the ghoul is killed it will raise again next to Yorick after 8 seconds. Each attack by the ghoul steals attack points from the target for 4 seconds. If you command the ghoul to attack an enemy champion, it will follow it and attack it until it's killed or moves too far from Yorick.

Q - Yorick's next basic attack deals extra damage and binds his target in place for x seconds. The ghoul recieves a speed bonus when moving towards the rooted target.

W - Passive: Yorick auto attacks in melee range slow targets (he hits them with his spade). Active: Yorick slams enemies in a cone with his spade which knocks the enemies back a bit while dealing damage.

E - Yorick commands the ghoul to explode dealing damage based on its attack value and slowing enemies in an aoe. Exploding the ghoul will reduce its revive time by 4 seconds.

R - Yorick empowers the ghoul increasing its size and health and giving it a cleave attack (every attacked target gets their attack damage stolen). Reactivating the ability causes the ghoul to taunt all nearby enemies. Exploding the ghoul increases the slow.

#The Ghoul: Steals 2/4/6/8 attack damage from enemy/enemies per attack when Yorick's level is 1/6/11/16 Base health and attack damage increases as Yorick gets levels. Base movement speed is the same as Yorick's movement speed.

#Final thoughts I don't believe everyone is going to accept the fact that Yorick wouldn't be a melee champion anymore or that there isn't a post death vengeance mode or that he's not able to summon different kinds of ghouls. But ultimately I do believe that Yorick is in need of a major rework that makes his gameplay have more depth whether it's going to be something like what I just posted or something completely different.

I think yorick is fine as he is; maybe a more meta-friendly ult, but thats it.

Care to explain in more detail why you think he is fine?

He is a very solid "liquid" champion, capable of building full mage and succeeding or building AD fighter. That being said his passive and basic skills are ALL very good for his role, and he does enough damage to be a viable threat.

The only weak part of his kit, in my opinion, is his ultimate. It... fits thematically, sure, but i dont think it fits the kit. Giving it some kind of "extra life" mechanic would work well, i feel. But... Eh. Heres my opinions on what to change his ult;

A) If the revenant kills the enemy champion who killed the original ally, the revenant revives that champion at 10/15/20% of their max health and 0 mana. (Would help toplane yorick)

B) "Memento ghoul": Yorick gains one charge every 60/45/30 seconds, up to three charges. Yoick may expend one charge to send a lantern ghoul to an enemy champion. Lantern ghouls grant true vision of the enemy champion, and increase damage dealt by ghouls to them by 15/25/35%. One charge is refilled upon kill or assist. (Would help jungle and support yorick)

C) Grez's lantern: Yorick tosses his lantern at a target area within 550 range and explodes into fire, dealing 150/225/300+0.5AD/0.9AP as magical damage. Each enemy champion hit by the fire summons one "hellspawn". Hellspawn last for 5/6/7 seconds and have an additional 10% to all stats per skill level. (Would help mid lane yorick)

What about his play style in general? Do you think it's interesting? Does it involve skill or strategic thinking?

To me he seems like a very simple champion who always does the same thing in a very predictable way.

I enjoy yoricks playstyle. He isnt flashy, this is true, but he does a great deal of damage. while having good survivability. The only weak point is his ult. And, in my opinion, it would thematically possible to nix his current ult and replace it with a flashy, fourth ghoul which is a skillshot that gives him some kind of mobility. Like something that deals magic damage on impact, and lets his ghouls flash to the enemy thats been "marked".

I'm quite sure Yorick is not going to be left what he currently is. There has already been discussion of Yorick's new kit by Riot a few years ago but they have shelved the developement for some reason.

I do hope that his kit is being made more interesting and allows different kinds of play styles since I am a big fan of the zombie/ghoul theme :P

Theyre very likely going to relaunch him a'la sion where they HAD a champion concept ready to go and wanted to dumpster the existing champion. I still firmly believe the reason why we didnt get a traditional skin is because Sion wasnt a relaunch; He was an entirely new champion who they gave the name "sion" to because Sion had been talked about by many and riot had promised a rework to make him more fun.

Quite honestly

In Yorick's case I doubt they will do a major graphical redesign. He has his own personal look already which represents his theme well.

I'd expect:

  • Full kit rework
  • Model polishing or a new model based on the old one (compare to Maokai/Sona/Kassadin VU)
  • New animations

well, I think he should become a mana burning summoner. Simply put, the more damage he puts out with his ranged ghouls, the more mana drains from him

so lets say with all 3 ghouls up it would be 500 mana per second but extreme damage at a range or something along those lines...he would actually be a lot more viable if his ghouls didn't just die on their own and with this idea, he has to carefully balance his summons or run out of mana and be useless, while at the same time if he goes all mana, his damage will fall off, so that brings mroe viability to athenes unholy grail for the kills he would be quick to nab.

I mean, with the undead, don't you think of mobs killing a target for their summoner or etc?

He really seems more a necromancer than a melee fighter with no survivability early

Of course I think of an undead army when I think of Yorick. But it's just such a cliché imo.

We also only have one champion who controls a single pet and that is Annie. We already have Zyra, Azir and Heimerdinger to control multiple units. I personally would find it more unique if Yorick was to have a single ghoul pet.

But I dunno, maybe the ultimate could be something like him summoning an undead army.

Yorick does need a minor rework. Reason it is required is that he falls of completely late game, as your records confirm and in fact loses most games. He needs something to compensate without ruining or changing him completely. I suggest for his Q, W, & E, that when you max out each of these skills individually, for these skills when cast, 2 Ghouls are summoned instead of 1. The second Ghoul will prioritize the next closest champion if near, but otherwise will target the champion, minion or neutral monster Yorick attacks. With this simple change, Yorick with his current passive left untouched receives less damage & in turn does more damage. You can also decrease the time his ghouls need to die by up to 50%. Any more time out would be too detrimental to other players. You can decrease the length of time if you like for his R as well but not really necessary. I suggest anything between 10-15 seconds sooner. That is as much as he needs without making him too powerful . Without changing any game mechanics at all, everyone that loves Yorick will love him more. With essentially no complete rewrite of skills but some improvements, Yorick will do more damage and receive less, have more targets for his ghouls & more sustain with more healing with 2 ghouls of Famine out. He becomes something more than the current joke he is. He becomes a Champion you would happily pick for rank games, especially in the Jungle. He will not be a powerhouse, but if played right, can become viable & fun to play. Please consider my proposition seriously. Changing any champions skills completely is not always necessary, and for most players, can be extremely frustrating.

Giving him more ghouls would just make the situation worse. It would just be a buff. And nobody would like to see Yoric buffed in his current form.

His kit currently doesn't have ANY strategic diversity. He just uses his abilities everytime he has them up. So fun!
