I'm looking for a tanky AP top laner in case my mid lane wants to do something AD (Yasuo or smth) and I can't decide between

Maokai has more raw team fighting potential than Gragas. His ult helps his allys take reduce damage he's got the sustain from his passive and his q for good peel. Maokai is up for a rework so unless you're willing to learn him fast enough then don't take a chance.
Gragas on the other hand is more of a pick oriented champion playing around his ult more. Knocking priority targets in or knocking about others from joining a fight helps tremendously. He's got decent sustain from his w and his e can be great for peeling or engaging.
TL;DR Maokai for more raw team fighting, Gragas for more pick potential.
They're both strong as long as you aren't like going against challengers because then only 4 champions are viable.

Maokai is an raw tank. Gragas is more of an play maker tank. Ekko is a bruiser ap tank. Malphite is kind of a playmaker too. Nautilus is strong af though(good ddamage, ok mobility, tanky when shield is up. The only weakness is sustain and mana)
