I think I know why Riot's auto-ban system seems to only work sometimes.

Honestly, whenever you report someone and you get that nifty little box saying 'ey some dude just got the smackdown 'cos he was a bitch' you're rock hard the entire time. You can't tell me otherwise. I think if everyone you reported got banned it'd lose some of its impact.

Or maybe on a more logical side it only gives you that box every now and again, or if the account actually gets perma'd, or every 4th person that gets punished because of your report, etc.

Shrug.

They're not trying to get you hard, they're trying to clean their game. It's simply that not every report has a consequence. Even if someone blatantly fed and spammed profanity, if it was an isolated incident, there won't be a punishment. The other day I straight up left a game before it began in the loading screen, I didn't receive so much as a "Hey, leaving is bad". Why? I'm an isolated case. I never do it. Same for your reports. The ones that go through are because that person has a history. No message, no history/offense wasn't bad enough.

It only shows up if the guy is banned because of YOUR report.

During testing they had it so that you'd get a notification whenever your report contributed to a sanction, but they quickly realized it was unbearably spammy since people would be gettting several notifications every other game. That's why they decided to restrict the pop-up for only the people who last reported them.
