Ekko Top?...Why?

I found myself playing with 3 Ekko players, one in each game, going top lane. Yeah...It didn't go well for any of them. I don't see this in the meta at all. But does it still work at all?

it's no longer powerful. Riot nerfed it to hard. It's still picked in LCS most of the time becasue of the sheer power in his W, but we all know that LCS properly represents yoloQ ( RekSai Gragas Shen )

The Trinity build became meta after Ekko was gutted. The old item 3025 item 3068 item 3065 is what isn't really viable anymore.

Ekko is currently the most picked top lane champion in Korean Plat+ play (AP Ekko mid is 18th for that role), with a 48% win rate. This seems reasonable, since high play rate champions tend to have artificially lower win rates, what with people playing them who aren't necessarily as familiar.

Keep in mind that "meta" in the purest sense assumes that the champion is being played optimally, but random fucks in SoloQ obfuscate what those numbers "should" be. I think it's reasonable to assume that, given the preference that professional players express in regards to Ekko, he is the strongest champion of his niche when played correctly. Kind of like Fiora at the start of the season.

Is he good in LCS? yes. Is he good in soloQ? not really. (unless highly skilled)

Actually, I did some more digging, in regards to those Korean Plat+ stats,

Ekko has a 52% win rate in games where he completes item 3078 but only 49% when he completes item 3025 .

It's popular at the moment in higher ELO play.

Trinity Force and Fervor of Battle provide enough damage for him to kill squishy targets and whittle down tanks. After that, he can just build purely defensive items for survivability which lets him stick in the fight and make use of his CC.

Though, that doesn't really help people who don't know how to play it.
