Man, F*CK IRELIA. (Warning Profanity)

I only play normals so I have the pleasantries of seeing this champion in EVERY GAME. This champion is quite honestly, disgusting. What she does, I can't even... how is this monstrosity allowed to exist. In the best scenario, she's up against me in the top lane and given my champion choice, I can at least hold her off in the early levels if I play it smart but... god help me if she's mid lane or roaming and targets that one player who's trying to have fun playing an immobile mage. She's fucking relentless, one kill, one small nudge, one little lead and she's out of control.

It's been ranted to death but this champion has TOO MUCH SHIT. She does way too much damage, that reset mechanic is bullshit, she's sticky as sin and doesn't really have a clear weakness. Remember when we talked about Stat Check on 'certain' champions? Yeah well, this champion has it too. Good luck trying to beat her with a stacked passive and conqueror unless you're named Jax. It's way too hard to shut this champion down. I have never seen her go OOM and her wave clear is absolutely INSANE. Because her Q does so much damage, basically has non-existent cooldowns and refreshes, even if SOMEHOW she's behind, she has a very strong bounce back ability.

I'm not going to say that -5 movement speed did nothing, it's definitely noticeable... BUT it doesn't address any of her issues AT ALL. WHAT WAS THAT NERF? Can we please get around to PROPERLY NERFING IRELIA? Thanks.

Well said. Yeah, I don't understand it. Instead of fixing real problem, balance team always comes up with some nonsense nerf like this. I mean, look at Alistar, not even problem in soloQ and they hit him hard. He was too tanky in engages and they reduced his hp. Easy.

Irelia is too sticky, deals too much damage and is too hard to kill. -5 movement speed will maybe only reduce pick rate - some players might drop her in favor of their previous fotm pick after seeing she was nerfed.

Our 'balance team' has well and truly, lost the plot.

you're making the problem up. Her win rate across all elos hovers right around 48-49% depending on what website you look at. She's not a problem, and in fact she's a little underwhelming everywhere except pro play and challenger/master

She's not a problem? Alright, for now on let's not do anything to champions who hover from 48-50% alright? Let's not look at how there are countless complaints about this champion and the fact that she hovers around 49% winrate with a near 10% pickrate and 60% ban rate. If Azir or Ryze was sitting at these numbers, I'm sure you wouldn't just wave them off as 'a little underwhelming'.

1: It is absolutely irrelevant that the boards are up in arms over her. The most angry people are the most vocal. There have been times when almost any new champion with a high skill cap was relentlessly hated on by the boards.

2: They would be a problem in pro play, probably. But Irelia isn't nearly as big of a problem in high level play as ryze has been in the past (or azir for that matter) She maybe could get toned down a little, but she's really not that big of a deal.

But EVEN IF SHE WAS A CHALLENGER/PROFESSIONAL PLAY MONSTER, that's not what the boards are complaining about. It is almost entirely people bitching about having to fight her, about how she is just blatantly broken and overpowered and is an unstoppable force who can't be dealt with. She simply isn't, not for 99.99999999999% of the playerbase.

Her challenger win rate is admittedly high, at 54.64%. However, she is still ranked 56th in win rate in challenger. Kha'zix, Alistar, Bard, Xayah, Draven, Vayne, Lissandra, Rakan, Leblanc, Lee sin, Xin Zhao, Kayn, Kled, Kassadin, Zilean, Graves, jayce, sivir, lucian, aurelion sol, urgot, camille, annie, taliyah, talon, and several others which I accidentally skipped over all have higher win rates than irelia, with more than 100 games played each. (For comparison, irelia is at about 400 games played)

Of those champions, many have even more games played than irelia or almost as many - Alistar, Graves, Lucian, Camille, and Taliyah all have more games played than irelia with substantially higher win rates. Lucian is especially egregious, with a whopping 806 games played and a 60.17% win rate. If you want to go after champions that are OP in high elos, there are far better targets (and lucian's win rate is higher in normal elos, too)

and the thing that really irks me is the hypocrisy. Most of the people complaining about her on the boards are the same people who nonstop whined that riot shouldn't balance for worlds and the professional players. You can't have it both ways.

Alright you seem to be a reasonable guy, let's just push the Irelia subject to the side for a moment. I'm a little curious and if you don't mind me asking, how do you feel about the current state of league of legends and are there any glaring 'issues' or 'problem champions' right now to you?

I'm mostly okay with it. I like this meta - I think a lot of champions are viable, moreso than in some metas anyway (ardent sensor meta anyone? UGHHHH) There is of course an exception to that in Challenger and professional play, but I think that if you are chasing balance in such places, you are on a fool's errand. When you are talking about players as skilled as they are, it is practically impossible to have such balance. The players are very good at exploiting strengths in champions (particularly ones with high mechanical outplay potential) I suppose you could address this by reverting the game to a similar state as it was in its early days, with champions being far more straightforward. Much less room for mechanical skill to be expressed, far fewer flashly outplays, dashes, etc. That would probably reign things in a little bit (Then again, even back then there were champions that were glaringly op from time to time. Remember AP Yi? shudder)

But I don't think I'd want to play that league of legends. I like playing a game where the truly good players have chance to prove it, and where being able to adapt to the meta is encouraged and rewarded rather than pointless. If you have perfect game balance, there is no "meta' because everything is equally effective. That sounds like it would get incredibly stale after a little while.

I don't know if I have any glaring issues with the game. I think Akali's shroud is ridiculously annoying, but I don't know that it's an issue with the game. I've thought champions like riven and yasuo were annoying before, but now I can't imagine league without them. I think they add a lot of depth and are welcome additions to our champion roster!

Lucian frustrates me a lot. If he was removed from the game, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Viktor top is a bit annoying as well, I'd rather he get played mid than top.

That being said, I don't know that I would say those are glaring issues with the game. I personally find them annoying, but again, that's just my opinion. And TBH they aren't as bad as some things from the past. I really don't miss fighting hybrid damage off-tank teemo top lane shudder

I pretty much like the game right now. Things are perhaps a bit more fast-paced than I would like them to be, but I also think people give up too easy. Because games are ending faster, people seem to become under the assumption that the game is lost as soon as you get a little behind. I am seeing so many people just giveup early because they are convinced league is just a giant snowball fest. That's not really true. Games are ending faster largely because everyone just hits late game earlier. Gold income is higher (both passive and from towers/bounties/minions) so people on both teams get their items faster then they used to. There are a few other reasons but that is one of the biggest. But EVERYONE gets more gold, quicker - not just the winning team. I think the biggest thing making games more snowbally is people's attitudes, the fact that they give up earlier.

Then again, that might be all in my head. It's possible people are so toxic and give up so easy because this is the first season im hardstuck low diamond, and not because of the way the meta has shifted. So I really don't know for sure TBH

Idk. I'm mostly pretty happy with how the game is right now.

Thank you for your honest reply, it was very insightful and I can definitely see where you're coming from.

I actually do agree that the game should be about demonstrating one's strength and that there will never be a completely balanced game, that's just an undeniable fact. I do however also feel conflicted on the issue about skill expression versus balanced because like you said, it's true if you reverted it back to an earlier season, the game felt much more balanced but at the same time, binary.

I think I do prefer the older times a bit more though. While I don't like overly long games (40+ minutes all the time) I don't like super short games either. With how fast you earn gold and how strong champions are compared to towers and objectives nowadays, the pacing of the game just feels so accelerated and kind of 'off' to me.

On the topic of Irelia again... to be honest, I feel Irelia is just a symptom of the evolution of League. Maybe if I were to view this a position of trying to evolve with the game, I wouldn't mind it too much but I quite prefer the old champion design, where champions came with clear strengths and clear weaknesses. I honestly don't see a clear weakness on Irelia other than the typical 'skill' argument. Yes, she's not that strong top right now at least, according to her winrate, but she has that type of kit, that if ever good, will choke out a lot of the roster or be forced to be permabanned. It's not something that feels fun to play against, unless you're playing a kit similar to hers so that you both have 'outplay' potential. Right now, I feel while you can play a few champions that are not the popular picks, I also feel the champions that are good right now are just so much better than the ones that are not. I also think this is because of the new rune system which, imo, has greatly attributed to the increase in damage and power in the game. Either you can abuse runes, or you can't.

IDK dude, while I want the game to evolve, I don't want it to evolve into a state that I no longer recognise it.

welp I'm glad we could have a relatively civil discussion about this. Maybe I'll revive it tomorrow, I might have more to add when I am not tired. Goodnight sir

i don't think a single champion should ever be a problem unless it's one skill in particular that needs to be nerfed. Having problems with entire kits like LoL's champions are defining of its lack of answers. There's always been glaring issues with ratios due to having a very limited champion pool in beta. I only saw the pool in beta, I didn't actually play afterwards into the launch. but I'm guessing they thought mobility was a good answer to the bruiser/tank meta that was real popular early with atmas etc. I mean sure I guess it is, but it's not the only answer as is slow stun and root isn't the only answer to mobility.its too little too late though which is kind of a shame. Too many undertuned champions that are basically garbage, and too many overtuned champions that are basically godly in every game regardless of team compositions on either side. Yes having a meta is fantastic, but having this narrow of a meta in an over-saturated champion pool is incredibly unhealthy for a moba. It doesn't make sense.
