Season 6 Sucked Dicks for Melee

Abandon··74 votes·4,389 views

I'm not lying when I say this past season sucked donkey dicks.

So many changes happened during this season that ruined the balance between Melee and Ranged. Forget even attempting to fight a ranged champion as a melee nowadays, you're not allowed to farm, you're not allowed to try and all in because you get chunked well before that, you're not even allowed to hide under your turret. It's just a constant barrage of poke and getting chunked - go back home, either tp or walk back to lane, get chunked again but you have no tp now so you sit under turret and then get all in'd.

Ranged champions across the board got buffed in season 6. Marksmen and Mage update really shifted the balance of early game power towards ranged. Before these changes, ADC's had significantly weaker stats compared to melees as a means of a clutch for their amazing late game potential with their ease of kiting, poking and dps. Mages on the otherhand, benefited extremely well with keystones and then on top of that, were given some pretty good itemisation options (protobelt specifically). Whilst all this was going on, Melees were left shafted. Only the truly 'op' or abusive champions were allowed to be good and even then, they fell out of favour quickly as ranged became prominent picks up to keep them at bay.

Ranged champions have an inherent advantage over melee champions, but there just isn't adequate optimisation in either the keystone or item department that allows melee champions to alleviate this burden.

What item do I bring when I have to lane against a quinn or jayce? Cloth 5? It really feels like I end up at Cloth 0 at 3 mins. Doran's shield? It doesn't even feel like I even came to lane with anything. What about when they are ap? There's nothing that helps me against the AP match up. It's just a feelsbad scenario across the board. Mid to Late game, sure if you're tank and you went full ARMOR then yes, maybe the adc light smacks aren't hurting you thoroughly but for anyone else it really is a matter of kill or be killed. There really isn't any good options for melees to idk, close the gap or take less damage for a brief second or something to allow them to do their job and kill the ranged champs before getting totally poked out.

Then we come to the keystone section and the one thing i can say confidently is every damage option just works better on a ranged champion. There is no contest to this. Sure maybe that cheesy AD Xin top might hurt hard if he gets close and QQQ you down but at least you can trade back and are allowed to walk up and down your lane without taking obscene amounts of damage for free. Ranged champions on the other hand can land 3 auto's and proc thunderlord's or just sit back and stack fervor on you. You proceed to attempt to take your 3rd melee creep and get done in by another TD proc or get AA'd to death by ferver users. You now have two options (barring jungle gank) - you sit back and cry as you lose a shit load of gold or you go back, recuperate your masochist energy to come back into lane as a lvl 1 or 2 vs a lvl 4 and proceed to have the same thing happen only worse. gg.

NONE OF THESE DAMAGE MASTERIES MAKES IT ANY EASIER FOR MELEE CHAMPIONS TO GO UP AGAINST RANGED CHAMPIONS BUT GOING DEFENSIVE DOESN'T SAVE YOU EITHER.

Legit, where are masteries to make your minions bash up the enemy aggressor for picking on you or the masteries that allow you to absorb a bit more damage periodically or even the mastery that allows you to not get fucked in the ass by creep block when you're fleeing for your life for arrogantly thinking you could sneak off 1 cs. There's really nothing that is a good standard pick or situational keystone that allows melees to alleviate ranged bullshit.

May melee rest in pepperonis.

P.S: FK REDSMITE RANGED JUNGLERS, THINKING THEY CAN GO MELEE FORM ON YO ASS CAUSE OF THAT DAMAGE REDUCTION AND DAMAGE, THE HELL.

Tl;dr - Melee have no good masteries or items to alleviate burden of range disadvantage and ranged champions can abuse basically everything. pls gib proper funeral for melee.

Of the top 20 winrates for top 14 are melee, and when it comes to playrate 18/20 are melee, so I'm not sure what exactly you're crying about

Ahristocats15 votes

why did they nerf multiple time lee sin while he had 45% win rate? why did they nerf leblanc a lot like removing her silence while she had 44% win rate? why did they olaf olaf while he had 48% win rate? why did they olaf darius in season 3 while he had 49% win rate?

oh right, cause win rate doesn't matter

Poske1 votes

To all the people who think le bl doesnt have insane skillcap

She had to be nerfed AT 44% winrate

That says enough

However eventhough le bl is in top champions in terms of skillcap she is easly the oldest of them

And as Le bl main she didnt need a nerf when her winrate was at 45% (Pretty sure it wasnt 44%)

who cares about win rate? last time i checked riot still nerf champs that have trash win rate, or buff champs that has a high win rate (hello jinx, sona)

You are experiencing withdrawal symptoms you have been high on the tank meta for far too long

Abandon12 votes

When tanks are strong and i mean STRONG (they can literally fite u 1v1) then obviously there's a problem. But a meta without the need or want of a tank leaves us with what we have now, this fuckery of a top lane.

Only Play Darius3 votes

The ADC and Mage reworks back to back really did hurt melees, season 7 is going to be Assassins then Divers or Vanguards so hopefully ranged champions will suffer for a while

KoKoboto3 votes

I like tank meta, sure getting 100-0 instantly is part of the game but it shouldn't be something that happens EVERY game

I can't remember what season it was, but I enjoyed the meta where nearly everything was viable and we saw a lot of variation in picks and bans. The problem with this season that I tried to outline is the heavy shift in focus on damage without proper gating which brings to light the age old issue of ranged vs melee. This season, ranged champions have had a massive increase in their itemisation, keystone and even kit - for melee's only the recent juggernauts (whom have been gutted) and reworked champs on the lines of pseudo-melee (gankplank and fiora) are able to keep up with the meta. Tanks can't seem to find a place to join because their team gets obliterated too quickly (rumble, kennen, jayce, ryze - all good for making fights end quickly) and bruisers struggle in lane and then struggle afterwards to make a difference anyways.

Obviously there are a few exceptions who even when they get shit on can still be effective (poppy) but I don't think it's a healthy thing to have the only available melee chars as hyper scaling tanks.

Hello I am Bird1 votes

I think you're thinking of S5 It was the tank meta funnily enough, and just about everyone besides a few champions could do well, and because Trailblazer was still a thing, anyone could jungle Sure Sejuani was fucking shit up, but she could be taken out with a ban anyhow, so it was all good.

Even among the juggernauts, only darius and trundle and olaf have any viability.

In the pro scene only olaf and very rarely trundle.

Tbh I'd call juggernaut's tanks, mainly looking at cleaver Darius/Garen, and not 2-3 dmg items Illaoi/Skarner/Mordekaiser

that's because darius has free stats

and darius needs to build 4 tank items, because he has no defensive steroids.

Maokai had quite over 50% p/b rate on summer split, average across all region series. I remember from the Victorius skin discussions that while he was not top at p/b (blame 100% nida), he still was at top 10 prob top 5 at p/b rates. Cant remember the numbers but he still was one the most or the most common toplanes. So no, shen was not the only one picked.

Who cares about Master? Even Plat is already barely 10% of the player base, so I'm even tempted to say who cares about Plat, but the thing is, it's the usual target for Balance, sooo...

But more importantly, calling the top 10-2% trash is fucking ridiculous, and if a lot of things are viable in Plat, the Balance Team is definitely doing their job well.

Abandon1 votes

I agree, would love to know if there's more upcoming to masteries than what's currently known.

EvilUnicornLord1 votes

I partially agree. While Darius is going to have real fun against top lane Vel'koz (and let's not even mention Quinn) Wukong would likely destroy that beholder. It's the difference between mobile and immobile.

Currently, the more mobile the champion, the higher the winrate (this is in most cases, obviously this doesn't apply to all champions in League). Now I have no idea how this is going to be balanced because I've never ran a MOBA or any other online game and I doubt you have either. So I guess the best thing we can do is to be patient and continue to ban and counterpick until the issue is resolved.

Abandon3 votes

Mobility, power spikes, damage all of these calculations is what melee players HAVE to do in order to win. The match ups is significantly harder for the wukong than the quinn/graves or whatnot. As long as they know their boundaries and proceed to abuse range and keystone advantage, you'll end up finding it hard to make a come back and slowly get zoned outta lane.

EvilUnicornLord3 votes

This is only true if you don't engage at a good time. I did see a matchup of Wukong against Ryze top and Wukong lost because he never pulled a solid engage. He just sat back and got poked/harassed until he was low enough for Ryze to engage up-close and kill him.

Perhaps in the very early levels when minion-aggro is a threat, engaging might not be a good idea.

But slowy tanks and juggernauts are really likely to benefit from Courage of the Colossus since they'll finally have an edge to counter ranged top laners with. Grasp of the Undying will be useful for melee vs. melee matchups and Courage of the Colossus will reward the colossus's courage to engage.

The only juggernaut that can reliably take advantage of CoC is Darius

Many juggernauts are entirely incapable of proccing it in the first place: Garen Illaoi Nasus Mordekaiser Olaf

EvilUnicornLord1 votes

Garen, yes. He has no CC unless you buy Frozen Mallet (or Rylai's, for whatever dumb reason). But you seem to be forgetting Illaoi's Test of Spirit, Nasus' Wither, the fact that any Mordekaiser worth his metal buys Rylai's Crystal Scepter, and Olaf's Undertow.

It has been made expressly clear that CoC only procs on HARD CC.

"expect it to be useful"

It is, for tanks (you know, champs with hard cc): Alistar Gragas Nautilus Malphite TahmKench Taric Shen Thresh Hecarim Poppy Zac Skarner Rammus RekSai

And for SELECT juggernauts: Darius Volibear Udyr

So they now have two tank/support keystone masteries and Olaf jungle has none? Genius. Well, it's not like Riot's been encouraging top/jungle tanks and juggernauts anyway. I feel sorry for some ADCs who are going to have to deal with Illaoi support.

courage of the colossus is dogshit for anyone who

a) doesnt have hard cc. meaning anything akin to a stun, snare, knockup, supress. it doesnt trigger on soft cc.

b) doesnt have a reliable way to engage, since the shield measures the amount of enemies around you at the time youre ccing them. meaning even nautilus ulting from max range wont benefit from the shield.

juggernauts usually have neither.

CoC will be godlike on Malphite ult engages into the enemy team, especially in combination with legendary guardian and the new mastery that increases your defenses by 10% + 2/lvl bonus armor for 2 seconds. but it doesnt do anything for juggs.

they have barely any synergy with the resolve tree at all. and those few masteries in that tree theyre synergizing with are usually complete garbage.
