Why I love being a Garen main (Since Lv1 back in season 2-3), and what I hate. (Small Rant)

I LOVE Garen. Like I played him as a Support, AP Mid Laner, and a Jungler. Why? Because I just fell in love with his kit, it's very precise in that timing my ult to be sure to land the killing blow, or hitting W when diving to stay alive. Made it feel VERY inspiring that I could do so much with him. Because I took the time to test builds, see what works, and what doesn't for me. An fully, I believe, master him where I can beat out most counters who aren't mains as well, or have more game knowledge then me.

But since playing, I get flack of course for proudly saying that I main this Might of Demacia, Leader of the Charge. Because he's simple. Q is a silence and a movespeed steroid. W increases Armor/Magic Resistance and null some damage when activated. E is an AOE damage source. An R is a execute. An I gotten SO much hate and negative attitudes towards me doing well, and then saying "Yeah, I main Garen." to either my teammates or the enemy team. Like "OMG he is so easy, and brainless". Ect. An I am bad as a player for maining him.

But aren't all champions "simple?". Aside from a select few; like Xerath, Azir, an Lee Sin (IMO). Like my last game, I was building full damages Garen with HP items (Like Frozen Mallet). I die once from a gank, but then snowball after I rush my IE and Frozen Mallet. Going 10/1 in like 20 minutes. Talon speaks in all chat, "Must be hard to hit the Q button then E".

But isn't Talons "combo" just "E-Q-W-R-R"? It's takes just as much it not less thought than Garen. Because I won't always make it with just Q. I have to set it up so that when I Q CAN land successfully. I normally E, than Q so I hide the animation of my speed up, hit E again to stop it to lower the cooldown and rush forward to try and blind side whoever I am chasing. Talon's E is a blink. So he just appears RIGHT there. He can be in a bush, behind a wall, anywhere (Or within range you know, not anywhere) and just do his combo and probably run off.

I feel that people really over-cap their champion mains "difficulty" with blind-prejudice. I mean, Garen is very simple, don't get me wrong. He is REALLY easy to pick up. But being able to fully make use of his kit, takes a bit of know how. I seen some people first time pick up Garen after the rework and think they can just steam roll. I pick Gnar, kite them to death, and abuse what they DON'T know.

Bottom line is, I would wish for people to stop acting like champions who are also very simple in style, would stop acting all high an mighty when they find another champion to be "easy" because they have a set play style. When in all reality Most, if not all champions are "easy".

Yeah, Garen is an easy champion to pick up. But people ignore the fact that like with any champion there are obvious ways to stop him. Garen is easy to kite out. Hell, I can 1v1 Garen on ANY adc with red buff alone.

But the issues that Garen has to deal with such as optimizing his kit (as you said, things like canceling your E to start the CD once they are out of range instead of letting it finish) are also true with most other champions. For example, Orianna has to deal with the positioning of not just herself, but her ball too as it is extremely important to position BOTH.

Because of this... Garen is considered an "easy" champion... because his kit is simple compared to others. Everyone has things to learn to gain mastery of a champion... some just have more than others. Garen happens to have a relatively low amount of learning to do compared to others.

All champions have some things you need to learn: Positioning (whether melee or ranged, this includes all position issues), skill max order, builds, when to engage, etc.. However, all champions also have personal items to master... for example:

Orianna - Ball positioning, use of E return for damage, mastering delay and range of ult, using abilities to support instead of damage(sprints and shields from W and E), use of abilities to damage instead of support (different times call for different uses).

Fizz - uses of playful trickster (escape, immune damage, when to use it to catch targets), uses of ult (aiming, doesn't need to be at target to be helpful)

Jinx - aiming Zap!, chomper positioning, when to use rocket/minigun forms, making use of a global ult (can steal buffs/dragon/baron/snipe kills), when to chase with passive (and when to let it go).

Garen - Use of Q to prevent kiting, use of W to maximize damage reduced, when ult execute is enough for a kill.

TL;DR --> Garen's kit and masteries are just relatively simple compared to other champions. You can definitely learn a lot from playing him and people that think it takes zero skill to go 10-0 on him are just being foolish.

An i agree with this full heartedly.

Orianna and other champions have kits that look fairly simple. Like Fizz who is also called "Brainless" when it also takes a bit of know how to understand.

In my honest opinion, Orianna is the most difficult champion I've played. There is a LOT to her that people do not realize. The fact that your ball does all of your damage and you do nearly none of it confuses people... most of my friends tried her once and never touched her again. xD

But yes, Fizz is deceptive. He's not super hard to play but he is definitely interesting to master.

I don't think Ori is that hard to master. It's just as dependant on your opponents skill vs her as much as it is your own mastery of her. She is actually a safe laner as she has great utility and cc with her ult if anyone goes all in on her, and she can farm from good range with the ball if she is under pressure from her laner. All you need to do is position your ball where it can pressurise and isn't too far from yourself should you need to go defensively.

Yes it is an annoyance. The majority of League is knowing how to play against opponents, map awareness, teamwork ability, strategic play and of course champion knowledge and mechanics. NOT like a lot of players like to think: champion mechanics and then everything else is secondary.

You can easily get to a good ELO without having superb champion mechanics. So QQing about someone taking a relatively easy champion just proves how little someone knows about the full mechanics of this game.

Enjoy your Garen :)
