Taric: Support-Tank or Support-Fighter?

manric man taric by eddysawl-d5xhsht

I remember reading a post on Taric's rework long ago saying that they were aiming for a Support-Fighter sort of direction, which really got me eager to see it. At the moment I see Taric very much as a support fighter (Who actually works really well right now with the new IBG and Eye sightstones, but shhh hidden OP), and to be a support that can wade into the fight and stand on his own two feet against all those smug mid laners and junglers that come down bot lane for dinner has always been a bit of a dream of mine! But with more recent posts on the rework, the definition's been swapped more towards a Support-Tank champion. Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE my support tanks, but with that comes the fear of them making him weedy and lacking in the damage department... What do you think? Should Taric be pushed in more of a support fighter DPS paladin direction kind of like his current state, or made into another tank support that offers utility and a handsome chest to hide behind but nothing else?

Support/Fighter

I like being able to transition from a body-guard into a high-utility fighter capable of dueling most champions.

In my experience, he's always been something of a weak support early game who didn't really excel in any area. He's good at protecting his ADC (heal + armor aura + stun to disengage), but he's never really been good at making plays in a duo-lane.

However, as the game progresses he scales into a monsterous fighter with high utility, durability, and consistent damage.

I'd really like to see this retained. At the very least, I would like to keep his Heal and his current Passive.

Wouldnt it be better to combine concepts of successful fighters/tanks like garen, rammus, braum, etc? Passive: Offensive stat from building armor Q: Autoattack modifier (lets say 80/85/90/95/100% base AD) that scales with HP and armor (25% armor, 3%HP) W: AoE HoT that only works on allied champions (lets say 20/30/40/50/60 per second for 10 seconds within 500 range) E: targeted stun that increases the more distance it travels and scales off of HP (8%HP, 1 second base stun. R: AoE CC of some kind + 15% movement speed and can move through units while enemy champion is within 500 range

Definitely a support-fighter if not a fighter-support.

I definitely would like to see him closer to a fighter because i personally like to take him as a top laner.

He has to be a fighter.

I mean, he plays like one. To me playing Taric is much more like playing Tahm Kench than any other support. Sure, you probably aren't dishing out as much damage, but you're constantly in the enemy's face.

When a fights kicks in, you jump whoever's on your carry and you go to town on his ass. Unlike say Alistar, who while being melee, is much more about peeling than fighting, as Taric, you want those autos. You want to reduce your CDs, proc those Iceborns, shred your enemies' armor.

And god do I hope Riot keeps him like this

I remember saying to a friend once that Taric was Tahm Kench before Tahm Kench. THE support duelist :P

I just can't wait for the release, they supposedly have his kit and game play ready already and are just working out kinks.

From what I've seen, their big issue's been in the lore and design department. Let's hope they don't mess up what his character should be :P

I mean...his design is done as far as I know. I've personally never given 2 shits about lore myself, but I hope for those that do that it's acceptable.

I recently read up on how the fighter class is split up between 3 subcategories (juggernauts,divers/bruisers, and light fighters) and with those in mind, I could see Taric as a support-juggernaut able to take a hit and hit back.

Taric

Hey there, I agree that Taric is a Fighter.

His current kit supports this. I mean, what do tanks have, mostly? A way to engage, hard crowd control, but no burst.

Taric has neither a reliable way to engage, or hard crowd control, but he DOES have burst damage.

He is meant to be played as a Fighter/Juggernaut that does damage but also protects allies.

Taric has a relatively long range stun, though. o-o If taric had higher base AD and base MS, in his current form, he might actually be decent. But the combination of AP and resistance is... lackluster. coupled with the lack of base damage AND scaling on taric due to being a support, youre underpowered.

Channging scaling to actual "tank scaling" (%HP+resistances) and giving him good base damage would fix a lot of problems though.

That's true, but that's all he has. Leona, Braum, Thresh, etc, all have more crowd control and ways to engage other than "I walk up to you and stun you". Fighters also have crowd control, just more reliable/less potent.

But with the scaling, I agree with you 100%!

^^ Taric was made in a different era of design. Hes innately weaker because of it - but also because rito olaf'd him and have purposefully kept him in a terrible state for no real reason, since the items that allowed him to be powerful were nerfed heavily shortly after tarics nerf.

Because Taric is one of those champions that if is too powerful completely pushes all other supports out. It is an unfortunate side effect of his current jack of all trades kit that has a heal, gives free armor/AP/AD to allies, and a point and click stun.

Taric has a relatively long range stun

Compared to who? Jax?

Taric has one of the shortest ranged stuns in the game (Ex: Thresh's hook, Xerath's orb, Brand's Sear, etc.)

Taric should be Top Lane Fighter or Support Fighter

Braum is already full tank support that doesnt scale with anything other than being very tanky with OP shield Alistar is very tanky as well and 7 seconds of 70% damage reduction is alot and i think people underestimate that alot which is exactly the duration of teamfights

Personally I love support tanks as well, but I want Taric to go the way of support fighter

fighters don't have no ad scaling

I want him to remain a support tank, to be honest. His old lore puts him in a position of protecting his allies, especially those that can't fight for themselves. And while I guess a fighter could be that, I just feel that a tank role fits him better.

On top of that, if he retains his heal (which, to my knowledge he is keeping in SOME form) then that would not fit very well on a fighter. Plus, I want him to be THE Armor support. He more or less already is. There is nothing I love more than going against an all AD team and giving my teammates like 50 armor come late game.

The spectrum for AD melee stretches out something like this, with the highest damage at the top and highest durability at the bottom:

Assassins (Rely on burst damage and escapes) Light Fighters (Have 1-2 abilities providing temporary outrageous survivability) Bruisers (Balanced mix of damage, CC, mobility, and durability) Juggernauts (High damage, low mobility, needs durability) Damage Tanks (Low CC, AoE or sustained damage, rely on endurance) CC Tanks (AoE CC ultimate, low to no damage) Tank Supports (No damage, mild CC, good utility)

If you ask me, as long as Taric stays below the Juggernaut line, I'll be happy.
