Why does it feel like supports are not respected?

Witchy Wench··34 votes·12,617 views

I feel like I make a lot of good plays -- save my team, nearly carry the game as the support, but never get honored. I've been told support is "easy" by other players, and get called an E-girl when I play Janna, Lulu, or Nami. So what's the deal? Is there some kind of special handicap supports get that makes their plays invalid/void of skill?

The role is hard to appreciate visually... unless you're like a Sona making crazy ult wombos.(or a LEona going 11/2/19)

Hit a single CC on its own and little happens, yet it facilitates the damage dealers to do what they need to do. Land a critical heal, and it just looks like the other player made an amazing outplay. Keep perfect vision of an objective allowing an easy take or an easy contest, the teamfight props go to who carried or who got the lead to enable the rotation.

Supports are respected among highly skilled players because they appreciate vision and leadership more. But.. it's just a reality of supporting. Similar to how healers in MMOs rarely get props for nobody dying.

I HARD carried that game... like... 1v2ing their midlane and toplaner type carried. It was hilarious. If I weren't so lazy I'd make a montage reel of them trying to kill me and failing.

But even still, the one time I screwed up even a tiny bit my ADC was like 'ARE YOU TROLLING ME DUDE'(but after the game tried to send me a friend request.... which I promptly turned down because I know he only liked me for my kda and I want to duo only for true elo-ve)

I've gone thresh and done some really flashy stuff in team fights and done insanely well that people actually notice and then at the end of the game I get nothing. Surprisingly in games iv done average in the adc usually honors me, so there's at least some small acknowledgement.

Ya every so often you can do something so hilarious you get noticed. Like... everyone noticed when I saved my ADC by bubbling a Jax mid-jump...

i know the feeling, ive saved retarded adcs before and won the team fight for the team through sheer utility..."good job adc, your amazing" ...

when a support does well, the adc gets the credit 99% of the time in my experience.

I've had one adc who told my team, "wasn't me, was the support" the rest seem to either glorify themselves or stay quite.

ive kept 5 assassins off an adc in an aram as sion before, but all credit went to the adc even tho i flash into skill shots, ult to peel Q to peel exhaust to peel, pop active items to slow and sheild, all while the adc mindlessly AA not even kiting... but hay, GJ adc your the real hero...

lol

I mean tbf - if support does poorly ADC usually gets the blame too. I know plenty of times I've shafted my adc by fucking up in lane and they get flamed in the end.

any time anything has gone wrong in lane for me (even if its not my fault) the adc has always been quick to flame me and blame me so he doesn't get the blame.

one time i was a support janna with a tristana vs a leona draven. i was at 10% hp and backing, we were pushed to their tower because my adc wanted to LOLshove and their draven was half hp because i kept poking him (adc didnt hit him once). trist dived them and died and blaimed me for not going with him under their tower...at lvl 3... ya. lol

ive had some smart adc lol

as a support who very frequently gets honored i dont find "honors" to be the issue

i do however find some games ( usaully the game i dont get honors)

i get a bunch stupid selfish players.

for example.. im lvl 9 everyone else is lvl 12 and my wave clear as Lux or Morgana is perfectrly fine

we have 3 players mid or top and our jungler.. who has 3 camps in his bot side.. he can take... comes and steals the massive wave im just about to take. and in like

SEROIUSLY? WTF IS WRONG WITH YOU I NEED EXP AND GOLD. you have 3 fucking camps u can take right next to you..

im not Braum im not Alistar .. im Lux im Morgana .. my items dont fucking cost 1900.. they cost 2900 or 3200

SanKakU1 votes

IME, it's even harder playing jungle with top laners stealing half my jungle if they can get away with it and completely ignoring their own lane being pushed on them. The worst part for supports is if they're trying to share the minion gold and heal someone or even multiple champs including themselves...but ranged supports usually don't take that income item.

charge attack1 votes

Support main here btw.

Gold is better on jungle anyways in 99% of situations. Unless your jungler's Zac. Compounding gold on one person > splitting gold between people. Simply how the game works.

Also you're better of holding/freezing the big wave for a carry instead of taking it all yourself - especially if they're on their way. Probably the worst thing you can do is half-assly clear a side lane and then let it slow push to the enemy denying your carries ~5+ waves.

i like how your under the assumption my teammates are competent.

if my teammates were competent they would have the map awareness to not let a wave stack and push to our t2 tower with no one to defend it..

or try to start a team-fight without having lane priority

my goal is to win the game.. if my team tried to force a fight with a minion wave the fucking big, even if we win the fight were going to lose 2 towers. in which case the enemy team came out ahead.

i was doing what my team SHOULD have been doing. i was taking the wave before it destroyed our turrets. im a support secondary.. yes.. but im also a JUNGLE MAIN.

i know exactly when i can take a wave and when i cant.

in fact if i have a support who is left out all alone and can clear the wave but has item 3097 .. i actually walk into the lane so he can proc it,

and if he is needed in the fight i willhelp him clear it so we can both help our teammates.

but if its a support like Lux Morgana Brand Zyra, and the support is behind in levels, and im not.. and and im not within 300 gold if completing a massive items for a power spike... im going to let them have the gold... or im going to take just enough minions to let me finish my item.

the jungler didnt need the gold.. if he did he could have taken the camps RIGHT NEXT TO HIM. while allowing me to get the solo exp to get into the game and actually HELP my team

you want to know a normal "support Morgana " build? item 3157 item 3092 item 3151 item 3165 item 3020 ,a dn last item is normally a thank items such as item 3143 or item 2065 item 3905

as for Lux

its normallyitem 3504 item 3040 item 3020 item 3092 item 3089 and the last item is a situational item such as item 3100 item 3905 item 3157 item 3165

niethe rof which have cheap items build.. and both ap supporp

LIKE ALL AP SUPPORTS

can also kill the enemy carried take game

now.. any person with half a fuctioning braincell with realize that a support getting idk A BIGGER SHIELD or a massive reduction in thier ulti cooldown, or finihsihng a CORE items such as item 3504 item 3003 item 3157 ( for morg) item 3151

is more important that u getting enough gold for a fucking item 1036

if i pinged that u needed 250 gold to finish item 3089 THEN I'M GOING TO FUCKING GIVE YOUU THE WAVE

but unless your CLOSE to an item that going to make a massive differece... don't assume "I'M NOT"

i am sharing exp all game, if there is a MASSIVE wave bot... and im 3-4 levels behind en exp.. i can easily gain TWO levels if i get that wave in solo exp.. thats a MASSIVE boost to my power. WAY more than any boost you would get outside of finishing a massive core item.

givign 10 thousands dollars to someone is going to mean a lot more to a poor person that it would mean to a millionaire.

unless that 10 thousand dollars is the remaining about needed millionaire purchasing housing to take care of a bunch of poor people.

if that millionaire is just going to shove it in the bank.. and save up for something that's costs 3 millions more... then u give it to the fucking poor person.. who can get a HELL of a lot out of it

Simple: We aren't.

I'm a consistent Diamond support player. Been so since the second year of me playing this game. Doesn't really matter, as people will still talk excessive amounts of shit to me regardless of if it's called for while saying some rather asinine things as "fact". They know they're lower rank than me, so they cite me being a support player like that somehow makes them better than me when they're Silver/Gold assassin mains or some shit.

Sometimes I wish I'd just return the favor, but then the mods would ban me off the forum...

Enchanter supports don't have their stats visible because they are based in utility.

Until about Diamond all people care about is damage and KDA.

When the game starts to go down the toilet low ELO players start to pick on the person with the lowest KDA to try to explain away why they're losing. They're gonna be like, "Soraka you're 0/4. You're trash." Meanwhile Soraka is 0/4/14. This is a common occurrence well into Platinum.

The tragic part about enchanter supports is that your team rarely recognizes your work, but the enemy team certainly does and then you become a target.

Damage supports that everyone hates bot lane do get recognition, so do tanks. This is mainly an enchanter support issue. Janna Soraka Lulu Karma Nami Taric

There's nothing in Blitzcrank's kit that makes him a support, he's just a support substitute. Even Pyke is more of a support than he is. Calling a tank a real support and then invalidating champs like Zyra and Brand who have proven themselves capable support substitutes is showing bias towards tanks and against mages.

Morgana has an anti cc shield a snare and an aoe slow and a possibility of an aoe stun. Lux is very well a good support option problem is people aren't generally playing her as a support. They're playing her as an apc bot laner. She goes full ap and uses her ult to steal a kill rather than start off weakening the opponents.

Somebody Love Me3 votes

People only recognize and appreciate the playmakers, and part of the reason why that is is because thats what riot hammered into our heads. Just look at worlds rn. Every non playmaking support has been shoved out so it's just Alistar Thresh Leona Rakan Braum TahmKench every game because you can actually see what they do and it looks cool and flashy.

AbiwonKenabi1 votes

Enchanters are just kinda bad right now. They got nerfed over and over in the wake of the Ardent Censer meta, and then Censer got nerfed too. I also wouldn't call Tahm and Braum exactly "playmaking" supports, more "defensive" supports, although they certainly have the ability to make plays occasionally.

Nami got played a few times. I believe Lulu was played mid at least once. The reality is also that playing through bot lane power and getting your ADC fed for late game hasn't been the most effective strat at Worlds 2018. Better to have an Ali that can roam and help set up plays midgame than a Lulu that is basically a late game investment. Kai'Sa is another factor, she's quite strong and pairs great with Ali or Rakan's CC.

There's a lot going on here besides just "flashy plays". Enchanters were too strong, they got overnerfed and they haven't recovered yet. Pros aren't going to pick stuff based on how cool it looks, they are going to pick things that work in the current meta and work best for their team. That said, Riot certainly needs to revisit Enchanters.

During the ardent meta, whenever an enchanter player made a good play, nobody would see that. They'd say "lol Janna/Lulu broken/no skill" or something along those lines, or praise the ADC/whoever they saved. Meanwhile if someone does Alistar's more or less point and click combo or does a flashy Rakan engage, it's HOLY SHIT LOOK AT THAT SUPPORT PLAYER. Nami is the only enchanter that sees this because she has some playmaking in her kit. That's why she wasn't butchered before worlds despite having a high winrate/playrate in solo queue. She's kinda flashy and her mechanics are more visible.

Riot intentionally kept certain things meta for pro play because of flashiness and the lust to see more combat.

AbiwonKenabi1 votes

That's what I'm saying though. Ardent Censer was last year's World's meta. Riot didn't nerf that until after Worlds (or at least after the Worlds patch). What's played professionally has everything to do with what's strong at the time, and little to do with any Riot agenda.

You're giving them too much credit, they don't plan that far ahead they just nerf what's strong.

SanKakU3 votes

Sad thing is I'd rather have an annoying Teemo following me around stealing half my large jungle monsters ready to blind Master Yi, Vayne, etc, than a 'support' running away from fights never shielding/healing me or disabling opponents for me.

Most supports are horrible excuses for players and so players that won't thank you for a job well done are just suffering from PTSD caused by supports from the past. That or you think you're doing a good job when you're not.

I play adc and I honor my support by policy if I get a support who did their job well, even if sy else carried like a boss. Only with the pick trolls, the tourists and the psychoes I so frequently encounter, it's a rare occurance.

Disclaimer: I'm one of "those" support players who plays mid lane champions as supports. (And if you want us to go back to mid lane, start calling for nerfs to Fizz Talon Zed Katarina Leblanc Ekko )

It's actually fairly rare that my contributions to a game aren't recognized -- but that's because I'm playing the likes of Lux Orianna Taliyah Velkoz Brand and I'm doing a ton of the team's damage and setting up picks/allowing us to siege. When I do play enchanters, unless I'm flashing into the enemy team and splitting everyone with a Janna ult and hitting my Zhonya's when they turn on me nobody ever cares when I'm doing well (but they flame me if I feed). This is why I play mid laners as support.

theChibiTina2 votes

Supports and supportive champions are more important than people realize. They are the protectors and the playmakers. People don't like playing support because you can't really carry, but carries don't carry so well without a good support. More often than not, supports provide vision to try and track enemy movement. It should be everyone warding, but it almost always falls on support. Even when I go mid I buy control wards and ward constantly because vision is just that important. Honor your supports (especially the good ones) because they do so much more than people realize. Everyone says support is easy, but I've seen many auto-filled supports fail miserably at it because they don't actually understand what the role truly does.

Wolfeur2 votes

You barely get any recognition from the game itself. There is no announcement for your assists, you can't take objectives or kills alone, etc. You're basically buried under the glory of your teammates.

Supports do get a lot of appreciation on competitive, though.

GreenKnight2 votes

You know, it kinda depends on which mode you play. I almost never touch rankeds, and people are pretty nice to me when i support on normals. Well, excluding all those Plat+ players i sometimes meet, but they are a minority outside of competitive games.

Maybe because that's how you want to feel?

You get just as little respect as any other role, but you guys are the ones who somehow managed to bitch about it for atleast 4 seasons by the end of this one. and i doubt this started when i started league.

Just maybe stop complaining everytime you make a play and not everyone goes "oh waw gj man ur a god". cuz honestly i've never seen anyone say that. WP/gj is the best ur gonna get.

Don't play a SUPPORTIVE character if you wanna be in the spotlight.

and then you come here to start a thread and make a little nami bubble for all you support players to sit inside talking about how underappreciated you are and how all adc players are degenerates.

also who the fuck still takes being called an E-Girl serious at this point.

Okamikazi1 votes

Its because supports aren't really champions, they are slaves. They cant carry, can't farm, can't fight. They have to be with someone at all times because their farming and damage sucks, meaning you can't help out a team that totally ignores lanes and just want to fight all the time, so even when they do win the fights they cant gain any territory because all the lanes are pushed back. When idiot ADCs die they blame you. When your partner dies, your dead too even when its 2v1. Youre always 2 levels behind everyone even when you own team is doing well.

Supports is the only class in Solo Q that have ZERO agency.

"oh, look there's a juicy wave that my partner is heading towards, i should join him!......Wait wheres he going? He not gonna farm that? Hes going to try to help the idiots that got caught? oh boy here we go." the idiots die before he gets there, then partner dies before i get there "wth... i cant defend this tower by myself. How can i get exp and gold if everyone keeps dying???"

Because there are lots of support wannabes who actually cannot play support as it is supposed to and forgot about their role in 18th min. This leads to role discrimination and stereotype of bad supports. (cs taking , camp taking , not following and playing solo)
