[Mastery System] Adding "Spiritstones"

#Hey there^^

The new Mastery System did not get that much sympathy when it was released. So how about adding a bit more dept into it? Something little, yet nice and defining thing?

#What is a "Spiritstone"?

A Spiritstone is so to say an additional Mastery, somewhat similiar to a Keystone, but they are effecting multiple (Tier 1 and Tier 3 ) Masteries. Like Keystones you may choose only 1 of them. You do not need any points in any tree to choose your Spiritstone (you can choose Ferocity Spiritstone with 0 Points spent in Ferocity tree).

#** What does a Spiritstone do?**

While a Keystone should "sharply define" the Playstyle of your Champion (you want to burst? Thunderlords Call! Want to Protect? Windspeakers Blessing! etc.), a Spiritstone should "polish" your playstyle.

http://s3.postimg.org/asswu977z/Ferocity.png Ferocity Spiritstone: Modifies your Masteries in a way that rewards aggressive play. http://s1.postimg.org/i555lm3e3/Cunning.png Cunning Spiritstone: The effect Varies, it can reward Passive or aggressive playstyles. http://vignette2.wikia.nocookie.net/leagueoflegends/images/3/31/Spirit_Stone_item.png Resolve Spiritstone: Mostly defensive additions.

#Wouldnt this just lead APCs to take always Ferocity etc.?

No! :) The Spiritstone comes on top of your decisions you made for the mastery tree, E.G. you have skilled Sorcery, an aggressive, Damage boosting Mastery, than the Spiritstone, no matter which one, will emphasize that in one way or another. Even if you choose Resolve to be your Spiritstone, Sorcery will grant you additional Damage in one way or another. In my Example, Resolve would add the follwing effect to Sorcery: Resolve: When you were 5 Seconds out of battle, your next 4 Spells deal +2% Damage. the others would be Ferocity: +1% Spelldamage Cunning: +5% CDR

So I think all Spiritstone ares "playable" on each role. I hope you got the picture ^^

#Will Spiritstones "solve the Problem with the new Mastery System?"

No, but I think it would make it a bit better :)

#Which Masteries will be effected by Spiritstones?"

Chosing a Spiritstone will normally effect 4 of your Masteries (As the most common way to spend the Mastery points is 18 points into 1 tree and 12 in another). Namently, the type of Spiritstone you choose (Ferocity, Cunning or Resolve) will effect the Following Masteries if skilled:

Ferocity: Tier 1

  • Fury
  • Sorcery Tier 3
  • Vampirism
  • Natural Talent Cunning: Tier 1
  • Wanderer
  • Savagery Tier 3
  • Merciless
  • Meditation Resolve Tier 1
  • Unyielding
  • Recovery Tier 3
  • Runic Armor
  • Veteran scars

E.G. Choosing the Spiritstone from the Cunning tree will grant said Masteries a different additional effect than choosing the Spiritstone from Ferocity.

#Examples for Spiritstone effected Masteries

#What do you think? A nice Addition or just a "meh" Idea? :)

It'd be cool and all but having too much complication in masteries can be a bad thing. And from the looks of it, this is too much to have to take into account for as possibly being in your opponent's arsenal, let alone remembering what each of your enhanced masteries are doing.

All in all I think sticking to simplicity when it comes to masteries is the way to go. So I gotta say no.

Thanks for the critism,^^

I would have a suggestion to keep it a bit more simple than, what if choosing the Spiritstone would always grant what the mastery grants under specific conditions e.g. Ferocity - always grants if attacking a champion with AA/Abilities. Cunning - always grants bonus if out of combat for 5 Seconds/after that. Resolve - always grants boni if under 50% Health.

So for Sorcery instead of Ferocity: +1% Spelldamage Cunning: +5% CDR Resolve: When you were 5 Seconds out of battle, your next 4 Spells deal +2% Damage.

It would be (example) Ferocity: +1% Spelldamage when hitting a Champion Cunning: When you were 5 Seconds out of battle, your next 4 Spells deal +2% Damage. Resolve: If you are below 50% Health, gain +2% Spelldamage.

So you know, an enemy who has chosen "Ferocity" will gain Boni if they are attacking Champions, whilst an enemy who chosed "Resolve" will have Boni when under 50% Health and an enemy with "Cunning" is waiting for the right opportunity.

Looks alot better and far more aplicable. Some adjustments here and there and balancing n then I'm sure it could work. Moreso a question of "Should it?" now.

I personally still lean towards no and believe that they simply need to keep adjusting the keystones. I'm just a single no vote among possible many yes's though. So we'll see.

Let's make things even more complicated. That surely will make things easier to balance and the game more intuitive.

This is an interesting concept, but your post makes the spiritstone seem more like free power on existing masteries just for the sake of more power.

Pretty good stuff, finally masteries will actually feel unique.

WookieJesuz2 votes

Sorry for not understanding, but I kinda don't.

So it goes like:

  1. Do normal masteries
  2. Choose a keystone
  3. choose a spirit-stone that buffs everything in that tree

Is this right?

Ralanr1 votes

So you'd only choose one spirit stone? And you have access to any of them? So you can use a cunning spirit stone while not having any points in the cunning tree?

Warden Karma1 votes

Exactly thats how I thought of it^^

It's an interesting concept.

I like the idea, but I do think it would still be a cookie cutter setup. Assassins and ADC will get ferocity, Tanks Resolve supports, cunning/resolve Fighters Ferocity/resolve

You could say then too that the point of a Mastery System is kinda senseless because X Champion will get Y Mastery in 90% of the cases (Like Damaging Champion will put 18 points into Ferocity and 12 into Cunning).

I know certain roles will tend to certain Spiritstones but still I think no matter which role you play, at least 2 of the Spiritstones are considerabale choices, as an APC can go for ferocity or cunning Spiritstone, if not all 3.

The Spiritstone comes on top of your decisions you made for the mastery tree, E.G. you have skilled Sorcery, an aggressive, Damage boosting Mastery, than the Spiritstone, no matter which one, will emphasize that in one way or another. Even if you choose Resolve to be your Spiritstone, Sorcery will grant you additional Damage.

Hope you got the Picture. :)

I see, so what you wanted was the option to to do something different, without it being a completely unviable choice. If you find you like the options in one a little more to your liking than another, it may not be better for the champion/role, but its better for you as a summoner. I got you now [slayer-jinx-catface]

seems like a very interesting idea honestly

Saw "spiritstone", was hoping for a proposal of implementing Dawngate's system.

I miss that system, it was incredibly flexible.

Really good, I loved it. I loved just about everything about Dawngate, RIP.

Their Spiritstone system was basically Runes and Masteries combined into one system that let you build your own set-up.

You had a 16x16 grid, and a selection of Spiritstones in a variety of shapes. There were also smaller items called Sparks, color-coded Green for Defensive stats, Red for Offensive stats, and Blue for Utility stats (CDR, Move Speed, etc). Each spirit stone held color-cloded slots for Sparks and had a stat buff that would activate if all of the slots were filled with appropriately-colored sparks. You could mix-match Sparks and Spiritstones to create pages with your desired stats.

BUT, there were some very large Spiritstones, taking up over half the the grid (so you can mostly only fit one per page) that gave passive effects when filled with the right colors of Sparks. These are analogous to Keystone Masteries, basically. So by mix-matching the Sparks and Spiritstones you could tweak a page to specific builds and effects.

What about people like myself, that play a different champion every game? Do I get screwed out because I don't have enough mastery points with a champion? If so, why am I punished because the Kat I'm vs mid-lane has 300+ games and I'm on my 50th Panth game?

This is your masteries page, like your talent tree.

This has nothing to do with Champion Mastery.
