What if the stats Mana and Mana Regeneration were merged?

Is there a good reason to have both stats? They seem to fill pretty much the same function; they keep you from going OOM. Why aren't your mana regen just based on your maximum mana?

They are pretty reliant on each-other anyway. It's easier to "read" low/high mana ingame, versus judging a players ability to fight you if they have low mana but high regen.

Wouldn't just the Mana stat plus replenishing effects, like item 3174, be clearer? Unique effects and the stat MP5 seem like they would compete with and devalue each other.

There are some differences, item 3070 scaling with Mana but not regen, for example. Surely that can't be the main reason they're separate, though?

Does anyone have any insight regarding this?

merging them would just make ap itemization even more braindead easy to buy random shit knowing all the items are overloaded. soemtimes picking an item for one specific thing is balanced.

The two serve different functions. If you blow through your Large Mana pool, and have slow regen you are going to have to go back to base if you want easy access to your abilities. If you have have a lower mana pool, but a higher regen, you might be able to hang around in lane longer, knowing you will have atleast some basic access to your abilities. It all depends on the champ and your play style. Usually if you're going after one, you're going after both in the long term anyway. But they are different!

Certain champions have kits that lend themselves to performing better with a giant pool such as Swain or Kassadin while others have kits that just require a bit of thoroughput to keep going for awhile, such as virtually any other mage aside from those two.
