Master Yi Does Too Much True Damage

Ronin One··28 votes·7,120 views

MasterYi So this guy right here. He simply just does too much true damage. Let me break it down as simply as possible:

If you get item 3715 /w devourer, you already have magic damage on your basics. That's fine. However, the passive item 3715 has is just way too damn powerful for Yi. It gives you true damage. True. Damage. Why is this ridiculous? It's because Yi already has his E that gives him even more true damage. Add that with red buff you get from the jungle and I mean literally, that Dead Man's Plate with all the tankiest items you build is useless against him. What's even more OP is his E scales with AD. I think what you guys at Rito should do is make his E like Irelia's W. It's a flat amount of true damage. Does not scale or anything.

I haven't done the math, but I wouldn't be shocked if Yi has more DPS true damage wise than Vayne. Also, I'm going to be honest, I wrote this after I played against a Yi. We lost. But I'm not making this post because I'm salty. I'm making this because I saw my 4,000 hp Volibear get killed in less than 5 seconds. He had full armor too so it was pretty ridiculous.

Not saying original poster is right and that Yi has balance issues, but his true damage isn't the most healthy/fun thing in the game.

Vistha Kai4 votes

Still less of a problem than 12% max HP every 3rd attack.

Spizzle90002 votes

From a range, too.

But seriously though, if you're against a squishy, it can be if you have E turned on, smited them, have sated, and red/fifth drag.

Gotta love Yi though. Really fun to play, especially with PROJECT: cause you just kinda afk farm till 6, then start gooning around and win at bowling cause you get an (alpha) strike every god damn time. :D

What happens if you don't have that? Or he's getting played by Cowsep's smurf and just dodges Morgana's Q?

Don't say "hurr durr git gud and countrpick" because i don't have that luxury in blind pick. I've had enough games where I've just been anally sodimized without lubricant because I had the unfortunate circumstance of playing against a Yi without reliable hard CC on my team.

The game isn't and will never ever be balanced around blind pick, just like it's not balanced around ARAM. If you're playing Blind in a CCless team against a Yi, you just gotta deal with it.

XxShirosamaxX2 votes

the thing is though that you can't deal with it.

James Stone1 votes

{quoted}

the thing is though that you can't deal with it.

The same way you can't deal with a Xerath/Lux combo on an ARAM game if you're all melee or how Hecarim and Sona were unstoppable in URF.

You can't balance shit based on game modes that aren't made with competitiveness in mind, in the same way the NBA doesn't change the rules to take 20 cm off the basket height because short people in friendly games can't dunk.

You wouldn't complain if this shit happened in a draft (without getting rightfully laughed out of the discussion, at least). Going blind with a CCless team is a risk, one that you're taking because you expect a reward.

Also, this complaint is so hypocritical! I don't see any of you making a thread when you pick Panth mid against a squishy late gamer, or Malza into a melee, or Darius into an immobile champ, or when you blind pick a full poke/disengage team against hard engagers, so stop bitching when the game isn't rigged your way.

Sona Ping4 votes

Then it's your teams fault for having such an obvious, exploitable weakness as No CC/No Tanks/No damage/etc. and you got a team that happened to take advantage of whatever your weakness was.

And it's further your team's fault for not doing anything at all to win a 5v4 because their Master Yi was being useless, farming for 25 minutes.

I know he's a hypercarry. He's basically a Zed but a bit more faceroll xD. But the true damage Yi does makes him not know the definition of a "tank". A tank is suppose to take a shitton of hits but if it's a Yi a tank won't even last 5 seconds. And on the last part, you're right. CC would take care of him. But isn't CC a counter to every champion? When is CC not good?

But hey, this is just my opinion. Most people are probably fine the way Yi is right now.

  1. Zed is not a Hypercarry and Yi and him are nothing alike aside from the fact they both build AD
  2. A Tank also has CC, and almost all tanks have on-demand CC. A Yi that doesn't want to get CC-chained and die will only jump the tank if it's the last enemy left, he's fed to kingdom come, or Yi caught him alone. Either way it's not unfair considering how squishy he is and how he lacks any form of CC.
  3. Your statements about CC show you're ignorant of the law of diminishing returns. To put it as simply as possible, considering a physical DPS of 500 for example, what is affected with the most severity by being stunned 2 seconds? A 50 armor, 1800 HP target or a 250 armor 3.5k HP target? CC affects everyone the same, but some are more vulnerable to it than others, especially Yi, who's only defenses require him to remain immobile and unable to act (W) or have good prediction skills and an enemy (Q), both of which you can't do while Hard CC'd

Zed and Yi are both assassins with a strong late game. I meant in that way and Ik they don't have by any means a similar playstyle. And I really have to disagree with Zed not being a hypercarry, because he is. Also on the last part. If I build Yi with a dead man's plate and a banshees veil for my only 2 defense items Yi would still be doing just slightly less true damage than a full dmg Yi build. Sooo I mean... If you think a tank being able to get killed in less than 4 seconds is OK by ONE champion... you're entitled to your opinion of course.

Learn the fucking definitions of the words you're using before you butcher them. A Hypercarry is, was and will always be a late game source of high and constant DPS. You know what Zed is? A goddamned assassin. He has burst. He builds like a goddamned assassin. With the exception of BotRk there shouldn't be a single DPS multiplier (read:attack speed/crit item) in his build. He has abovs average DPS for an assassin, but if you're going to compare his DPS to someone like Yi, Kog'Maw or Vayne in the late game you are wrong. This isn't just a "you're entitled to your opinion" thing, you are just. Objectively. Wrong.

I won't argue that Bruiser Yi is a good build because it is. One of the only ways to play Yi in high elo. However, considering this:

He either builds those items first, foregoing attack speed and damage early on, in which case he ain't a threat and is focused on surviving to the late game, so you can force trades and objectives against the enemy and come out on top, or he's building them last, so he's still squishy as shit for a good portion of the game, where the normal counterstrategies (early pressure, counterjungling, hard engaging, forcing teamfights, etc.) work fantastically. Building them inbetween leaves a jumbled and useless mess of a champion, so that's not even worth considering.

So why is it ok for him to, as you hyperbolically put it, slash a tank up in 4 seconds? BECAUSE HE PAYS A HEAVY PRICE FOR IT. No CC, no disengage, no escape, no conditionless tankiness, all for his damage. If your team failed to take advantage of his moment of weakness, and let him thrive to the late game, that's your fault and no one else's, ESPECIALLY not Yi. There's a reason Yi is rarely seen in Pro play. Outside of having a team tailored for him or the meta heavily favoring him, the level of fucking up required for him to consistently get to the point you're fearmongering about is so monumental that it's not worth the trouble.

I maintain that everyone that complains about champs like Yi should be forced to play DotA 2 for a month. See what the bullcrap they're trying to sell as snake oil actually looks like and learn how to deal with it so that Yi seems trivial in comparison.

In short, the only thing "wrong" with Yi right now is Rageblade, and that's being addressed. Everything else is just you

P.S.: Yi is not a bloody assassin

According to the game itself Yi is

Primary role: Assassin Secondary: Fighter

Plus if I can kill anybody on the map in less than 5 seconds and it takes even less time for squishies I would consider them an assassin

And you'd be wrong, unless you want to add Malzahar, Syndra or Draven into the list of Assassins.

And unless you also wanna claim Morde's a marksman and Rengar's primarily a fighter you'd do best to learn tags mean jackshit

And for what I hope is the final time, there is a significant difference between DPS and burst. Compare Yi's build, wundows of power and early game damage and you'd realize how stupid calling him an assassin is. Lack of on demand burst and damaging abilites beyond his Q should be enough, but the other ones are easy to find if you still have doubts

Steel Blossom1 votes

Well rn with devour Yi can build bruiser and still do about the same true damage.

Z Statistic5 votes

Your volibear should have gotten more hp then.

Also, Yi is a lategame champion. Dealing insane dps to everyone is kind of his thing.

Dechozen1011 votes

armor. item 3075 Yi repellent.

Hayaishi23 votes

Yes he does, Yi literally melts everyone the moment he gets red smite and a couple of stacks for devourer, he is doing waaaaay too much damage early game/mid game, needs to be toned down.

Dechozen1015 votes

Take away his items and apply CC. You have a champion who can't do damage now. (basically relies on Your bad team comp and tons of money)

Yes we know CC stops literally everyone in this game, thanks captain obvious.

Doesn't justify Yi.

Dechozen1017 votes

Actually, it shuts him down harder than others. He IS a melee champion and his only ability that does damage under cc is his q, which can't be used when snared. It also has a large cooldown if he isn't constantly auto attacking.

That's a simple way of seeing things, the game is more complicated than just CC > Yi.

No Yi player face tanks CC. And he isn't even squishy enough to explode in second when he's CC'd, fact he has too much power early game with just devourer, and when he gets bork/on hit item he starts doing so much damage that your defensive items don't matter.

Dechozen1012 votes

Do damage to him back. He is building glass cannon, right? He spends tons of cash on damage only, so try to have more balanced set of a bit of defense while having a good output of damage too. If you can kill him once, your team may get a nice bounty off him as well as put him in respawn for an extensive time.

Vistha Kai5 votes

Nah, that's too hard.

Complaining's easier.

Monkey D Luffy5 votes

I'm not gonna go in depth but there's a reason why Yi isn't picked competitively.

Healz Please3 votes

Health counters True Damage. If armour isn't doing a good enough job, build more health. Also, hard cc kind of destroys Yi. He never really builds too tank so some hard cc can shut him down pretty easily.

Dealth3 votes

According to stastics on champion.gg

Yi 20.7% true damage. Vayne 20.7% true damage. Fiora 20.8% true damage.

Count Zubat3 votes

I can agree that stopping Yi late game is really hard. But early game... invading his jungle, stealing his camps etc. can really screw him over. The more you delay him getting Devourer, and then, getting to 30 stacks, the better.

Quepha3 votes

You aren't allowed to complain about anyone's true damage unless it's Fiora.

I mean, I'd be fine if he did all this damage BUILDING full damage. But he can build bruiser and still be very successful in shredding tanks. That right there is the biggest bullshit, a pseudo-tank who can shred other tanks. That needs to be addressed.

Du Ma Mi3 votes

An avid Yi player myself, I prefer to think of it this way:

MasterYi and XinZhao are very similar. They both rely on Autos to kill other champions. The difference?

XinZhao Has some cc and a built in heal on autos, that's doubled with sated. He's also naturally tankier.

So then why would I pick MasterYi? He has a lot of true damage, which means he does more damage than xin to squishies, bruisers, tanks... everyone.

MasterYi is meant to be a hyper-carry, and is meant to do ** a lot more damage**. That's why he does so much, because his auto's are pretty much all he has.

N0rth Wind2 votes

not "pretty much", it's literally all he has :P

I'd love mana burn, or at least a mana vamp ability (as in stealing their mana for yourself).

Dechozen1011 votes

Kassadin I believe he had a skill similar to that in the past.

Yeah, his W was outright stealing mana instead of just regenerating it,and minions back then had mana just so Kassadin could steal it from them.

Kassadin I believe he had a skill similar to that in the past.

His W. Wit's End also had it during Beta, 42 mana per hit. There was a time where AD/On-Hit bruiser Kassa was all the rage. Lasted till Early S1, I think, when Riot started wanting to be more than a poor man's DotA

Dechozen1012 votes

Yi does too much true damage eh? His e gives him a SLIGHT (7-8%) AD boost. The activation causes it to do More damage and partially, it's true. The thing holding him back? Lasts a short duration and also has a lengthy cooldown. Yi also uses tons of money to grab his damage items. I honestly think he is just a high rink and high reward champion.

YI dosent BUILD glass cannon any more

Yi build atm is

item 1415 item 3111 item 3124 item 3748 item 3742 item 3065 (some people build BTRK rather than Guinsoos)

But YI dosent go for the full derp YI any more because he dosent need to

So that why he need NERFS
