How to outplay Volibear support?

Been having trouble with this. In my last game specifically I was a Leona support, but I kept having to throw myself in to his flip to prevent him from flipping my carry. (A Tristana, who already isn't a good early game champ). I tried cc'ing out of it, with with Leona's q or zenith blade, neither worked. Volibear proceeded to flip after the cc was over.

Their jungler kept ganking on at least 4 separate occasions, forcing me to burn both my summoners, once again, just to keep my carry alive. She only died once or twice during the whole game, so I feel I did that well, except volibear kept getting the kills instead of his support, but then he started charging around the map feeding on everyone.

In retrospect, (this was blind pick fyi), a Janna, Taric or Nami would be good to stun/knockup from range to stop his charge from a distance. Volibear as a support, I realize, isn't as tanky as a toplane pick, but he's still -very- tanky. A smart volibear stays back, in bush, lets the lane get pushed to his tower a bit, that way if he charge flips there's nowhere for them to run. All volibear support has to do is not to make dumb mistakes, and he'll win. I've played as a volibear support before, and I've won at least 80% of those lanes.

The problem is, I'm not sure how to counter it outside of playing draft pick and picking a taric or janna into the mix. The other problem was that I only went as Leona, because nobody else picked tanks. Everyone was super squishy (toplane fiora, jungler was a...kayne, I think?). Advice?

You should take ignite. Just kill him or his adc. If he uses q just kite it out. Even if he flips someone you just stun and walk away. And he does nothing.

That is what you do to voli.

That voli didn't even run flash or ghost. He shouldn't even be able to touch a tristana.

Just need to play it better/smarter is all. Voli is literally not that good unless you just try and face tank him.

Right. As I said, I took a LOT of pressure from their jungler. By ourselves we were mostly fine. He flipped me quite a bit and I q'd and tried to walk away (but leona is slow before she gets boots) even then, he went tenacity. After that I wasn't really watching, but he could have ran a QSS to get out of my stuns?

Honestly, if this were DRAFT, first of all, I don't usually expect a voli to support (could switch out summoner runes just before the game starts and confuse everyone), I'd run a nami, ideally. Her bubble is great. She has a movement speed buff as well, but the better support options would require a tankier front line. Our jungler and top laners were both really squishy. Running a squishy support would have given us no front line.

Baiting the flip is also hard, because he goes super fast, especially with Dead Man's Plate and full boots. He'll out run you no matter what and then his E slows.

Now, I would have turned to jump on their adc, but they had an Ezreal. I didn't zenith blade on him, because I knew he'd just pop back, and punish the miss. It was a really annoying lane, because Ezreal focused on Trist HARD, and when he did, I always tried to get in the way, cc him out, and prevent trist from taking too much damage, but I became very predictable, because I know Trist is a poor early game laner, and the Ez/Voli botlane was just too much.

Of course, the other option than Leona was Thresh. He'd be no problem at all simply because Thresh's flail could just fling him back a bit.

Honestly I think a lot of it came down to heavy enemy jungler presence (I warded the whole area, which saved me a number of times), and lack of jungler presence from my side whatsoever. Toplane had a Fiora against a Teemo, so he was up there most of the time preventing her from getting poked and blinded into oblivion. Very poor game. Very tilty.

as a tank support against a voli (or any other tank really), your priority should be to disable the enemy carry most of the times. Better yet if he flips you and you immediately turn and jump on their adc. Tristana in particular, can jump out of danger after being flipped, so stopping it from happening isn't always the best play

in general, volibear is only capable of starting a fight bot with flash, unless you mess up. Most ranged supports can easily stop him from engaging normally, and tanks can negate the engage by controlling enemy adc in return.
