Could We Get An Update On Poppy's Gameplay Rework

It has been a while since we've heard about Poppy's new rework and I'm honestly really scared about keeping her old identity. We've been told that the only part of her kit that's being kept intact is her e, which is only a small part of what makes Poppy Poppy. Considering how I'm asking how the rework has been going, I'll just post on what I personally think defines Poppy's identity.

-Her trash early into Godlike lategame This really defines how people view Poppy as a whole. They see this yordle who starts out really weak, someone they can abuse, into someone you don't want to mess with. If the rework does not really keep this point, it really doesn't capture Poppy at all.

-Her ability to become more tanky as her health lowers Her passive is what this is at the moment, which is incredibly strong. At the same time however, her passive is very inconsistent, and actually discourages you to build tanky. This is part of her kit I really think is important to her. She walks into a battle and walks out with >100 health.

-Her hammer's powerful chunk This is currently attached to her q. Her ability to take her hammer and smack an opponent for a large portion of their health is something which really makes Poppy a cool champ to play. It is also something that adds the most satisfaction to her gameplay. Whenever you hit a q when you get your trinity force, you can feel the power surging through you for that 1 smack which takes almost a fourth of the enemies health.

-Her wall slam(ish) Her wall slam is something that is nice, but isn't as important to her identity as something such as her passive, or q. I do love her ability to slam people and it makes for a great mechanic, but it isn't as important as the others. If the slam is getting changed, I still want it to punish enemies for hugging the walls.

Her ult is something that I can be lenient on. I like how she's so determined that she can just tune out the dmg of everyone else, but it isn't too core of a mechanic on Poppy than her passive is. If it is possible, the ability to tune out the dmg/cc of all but 1 enemy could be something cool to add to her kit. I would also like to add that Poppy isn't your typical bruiser. She is a champ that can build mostly damage and still be tanky, but can build tanky, and still do well but with less dmg.

So that was what I was thinking when it comes in terms to a Poppy rework. If we were to go out and destroy all of these identities, she really wouldn't be Poppy. I'm hopeful the rework will keep at least some of these abilities, and put consideration into changes to help give her these identities. Would love to know how the rework is going with her kit, and how similar it is to current Poppy though.

I know the ultimate is going because it is an unhealthy ability. I know the passive is going because it lacks readability. I know the wall smash is staying. These things have been confirmed by Riot.

I doubt they will keep the W - press a button for stats is not good gameplay. I also doubt they will keep her Q in the same form as it is currently. AA resets are actually quite boring and so many champions have them that they are far from unique.

If it makes you feel happy, IronStylus is doing the artwork. Prepare for armour!

That actually sounds like a nice idea. A .5 or something second stun into a 1.5 second stun in a wall sounds like something that would be balanced yet keep that awesome idea of wall slamming.

The w is something I only somewhat liked on her. Just the active really, but all I want on her rework is some sort of speed boost to allow her to chase properly. She would be trash without a speed boost, or a different mobility spell. Also, unlike the gameplay, I am very exited (in a good way) for the artwork :)

I play Poppy quite a bit when I go top lane and I think she's fine the way she is.

Ahem I must prepare to get downvoted.

But I honestly do believe she's fine the way she is.

I honestly like her the way she is, but she's getting a rework whether we like it or not :( If riot was able to adhere to what the players wanted, I would like a rework, but considering that they think most of her mechanics are toxic, I myself would prefer for this to not happen.

The ult, too, is a defining quality of Poppy. So basically everything Poppy has makes Poppy, Poppy.

I'm pretty sure they consider her ultimate toxic to gameplay, though.

The Soulforged1 votes

Yeah. I honestly thought that the fact that she could ignore everyone but one person was a nice defining factor. Her ult is what riot considers toxic which is why I made that category more general. One problem with her ult's toxicity is the fact that she can ult the support and focus everyone else for the most efficient strategy most of the time.

I've never learned to play poppy and I've never fought against poppy, so I have limited knowledge. But wouldn't it be generally better to target assassins since they have almost no CC and have burst damage, which poppy resists?

The Soulforged1 votes

It really depends on the situation. If the assassin is there and not going for you while you run down carries, then that would be the best choice. If they just have a burst mage who's ready to burst you and a support Soraka, then you're most likely going to ult the Soraka.

Her trash early into Godlike lategame

No problems with that, melee hypercarries exist: Fiora MasterYi Nasus

Her ability to become more tanky as her health lowers

That's a bit of an iffy one, considering the fact that it would allow her a cheesy way to win trades. I'd prefer having a passive similar to Graves' where she's tankier in combat. I don't like the idea of giving a champ with that much firepower tank status once she's in sniping health. It makes her countered by counterpicks rather than proper play.

Her wall slam(ish)

On the contrary, I believe that the football tackle is core to Poppy's identity, well, the one ability that isn't complete cancer to face that is (cough Diplomatic Immunity cough.)

Honestly, I think giving Poppy tenacity and penetration resistance against targets she's not directly damaging for a passive over time, the football tackle, and an ability to create walls to better utilize her football tackle keeps Poppy's identity without being too overbearing.

Nasus isn't even all that good late game Because in late game people usually group up and teamfight and well Nasus is pretty poor at teamfighting late game especially if the enemy ADC gets item 3140 /item 3139 which they will probably eventually get and or the support getting item 3222 as well in teamfights Nasus usually just ends up as a tank (not really being able to deal much if any damage most of the time) which don't really have that great tank steroids (other tanks could survive longer) and a tank with meh CC and no initiation

Though of course his 1v1 and split pushing is still strong (though then he risks his team throwing by fighting 4v5)

What about her Q? It is an okay ability as it is... it is pretty core to her as she currently is... though it is a pretty boring ability... it is just damage... Do you have mana? Yes? Then spam this ability as much as possible for damage

The Soulforged1 votes

He has good lategame, but not in the same way as Poppy. He has a rly strong wither, aoe shred, and a q that can do good dmg if an enemy is close, or take down towers with ease.

You believe these things to be Poppy's core identity, however, I'd wager the identity doesn't really impact you. As a secondary main of Poppy, however, her core identity is definitely a brawler who deals insane amount of single target damage (most in game) whilst being able to focus on the target you wish. The football tackle is nice, but in the end, is only really used as a gap closer.

The Soulforged1 votes

I do like the tackle, but I don't think it is as core as some of her other things. Her getting tankier as she gets lower is something that isn't completely core as well, but I feel like either that, or something similar to her ult needs to be kept.

For me what defines Poppy as Poppy:

  • Her Q have multiple scaling
  • Her E tackle
  • Trash early but scary late

looks like hybrid of Fighter/Assassin and Fighter/Tank...

Death by Kayn1 votes

Why do you see the E being so core to her kit? For me it is the Q and Ult. W and E riot can replace, in my opinion. Would just like to hear your thoughts.

junglerboy161 votes

E is the only thing they are keeping actually, they've said that several times.

Death by Kayn2 votes

That makes me sad, I don't want them to completely butcher what make poppy so much fun

The Soulforged1 votes

Agreed. The only reason I made this thread is because I noticed how scared I was for the gameplay rework and how they would handle it compared to other reworks cough karma cough.

this, although I agree the Ult is core, but I also agree that it maybe little problematic IMO...

and maybe they didn't want to keep the ult... and they want to keep her E...

well, as long as there are ability with multiple scalings like her Q, and ability to scary late game, maybe OK...

The Soulforged1 votes

That's why I'm mostly talking about the general idea of those abilities. I'm hoping they can keep the identity of those toxic abilities in her kit even if they remove those exact abilities.

junglerboy161 votes

They keep saying they want to keep her "dash 'n smash" play style, and have said her current E is the healthiest most interactive part of her kit (sort of like how they took Sion's shield and health gain as his healthy interactive kit function). They are almost certainly going to have some analogue to her Q (although I doubt it will be the same pile of scalings on an AA reset) for the "smash" part of that design goal, but her passive is likely to be totally scrapped, and her ult is likely going to be very different, at least in terms of how it functions.

The Soulforged1 votes

I do like duo scalings on Poppy, and I think that should be kept. I like building stuff like Hourglass on her lategame sometimes. I also agree that she's much more of a fighter/assassin than a fighter/tank. I do like how her tankiness comes innate rather than something she builds unlike most bruisers.

XxxLumberJackxxX1 votes

We'll probably get nothing until PBE< just like SION

Also- the bodyslam IS poppy. WTF do you mean it isn't core? Tiny girl mashing herself bodily into the enemy. THAT IS POPPY. The rest of her kit can be thrown out willy nilly but KEEP DAT BODYSLAM

The Soulforged1 votes

I hope we can get something going even though the reworks are most of the time not talked about too much with the community. Edit: Well, some of the time.

Death by Kayn1 votes

I came into this post hating you because I don't want poppy to get a rework; I love poppy. However, what I found were a bunch of well thought out points designed to conserve the core identity of her. Thank you, and I apologize for my ill-advised anger. I really hope Riot takes this pathway, with poppy being my secondary main but pretty much being unplayable in ranked.

Thank you :) Am not looking forward to the rework myself, but I'm just trying to make the best of the inevitable.

Shameless bump for my favorite determined yordle.

Shameless Necro.

Well I felt like necroing this just because her rework is down the corner and I'm scared as always.
