In a recent game of Poro King I loss. But that is not my problem I was the tank on my team and no matter what I died more times than I could count due to damage but odd thing was my magic resist was over 100 and i had over 100 armor as well. So my question is what was i doing wrong to be so weak because I got chunk down more and more. For more infomation I was playing Nautilus runes where hypid pen mark, armor seal, ap quints and mr/lvl and flat mr glyphs with a 0/21/9 mast. The blue team had only two champions runing magic pen but still i got destroyed in both early and late game. Please help me understand what is did wrong.

After looking over the game I see that magic pen is very strong and in some cases out scales mr. But I'm not sure why. Also after doing some research on this subject on the lol wiki it stated that the order of application of magic pen was done not once but in order of four which is odd here look at this.

When attacking, armor penetration and armor reduction are considered in the following order

  1. Armor reduction, flat
  2. Armor reduction, percentage
  3. Armor penetration, percentage
  4. Armor penetration, flat

Magic penetration and magic reduction are considered on the target champion in the following order

  1. Percentage magic reduction
  2. Flat magic reduction
  3. Flat magic penetration
  4. Percentage magic penetration

By looking at this it look like the system favors attackers and makes it useless do go defensive.

Also, you got both an Abyssal and Frozen Heart, leaving you rather low on actual health to back those stats up.

The system DOES favor offense over defense. Your job as a tank isn't to not die. It's to be JUST tough enough to leap in and force the enemy to blow all their cooldowns on you, sparing the squishy damage-dealers on your team from being blown up. If you can survive eating 4 or 5 ults... GREAT. But honestly... if five people blow all their damage abilities onto ONE person... he'd damned well BETTER die.

Pure tanks aren't even really a thing. Tanky champs either need to do some damage (Bruisers) or have a lot of utility and CC (Tanky supports). The enemy needs a REASON to focus you. Either that you'll kill someone if ignored, or that you're locking down their major damage dealers. There isn't really a point in a champ that doesn't die, but doesn't do anything else either.

Well for a start, you bought an item with an AOE effect meant to counter Auto Attackers when there's only one dedicated auto attacker on the enemy team (Ashe. Teemo was AP so he doesn't count). All it would've taken was a Randuin's Omen, and its Active Effect would've been 1000 times better for you anyway as a Nautilus.

Furthermore, I'm not sure why you'd rush Spirit Visage>Banshee's Veil. The latter has its own built in Health Regen and Nautilus doesn't have any built in health regen for Spirit Visage to take advantage of. Hell, you're (apparently) the dedicated tank of your team, Locket of the Iron Solari would've been a much better choice at this point as a pure defensive item. I'm also not sure what to say about Abyssal Scepter; it looks like something Katarina or Nunu would've/should've been building, and thus negating each other's Unique Auras, and it's another item slot you could have dedicated to a true tank item, like one of either a Banshee's Veil or Locket of the Iron Solari.

It's the same for both types of penetration.

  1. Flat Reduction (i.e.: Abyssal and Kayle's passive)
  2. % Reduction (i.e.: Black Cleaver, J4 passive, Kog'maw's Q)
  3. % Penetration (i.e.: Last Whisper and Void Staff)
  4. Flat Penetration (i.e.: Brutalizer and Sorc Shoes)
  • Technically, since the penetration change in pre-Season 3, #2 and 3 apply at the same time since they're multiplicative.
  • Defensive stats are meant to increase the time it takes before your inevitable demise. Considering how squishies can die in less than a second, a tank surviving for several seconds while getting focused is significant.
  • Armor values are higher than MR because physical damage have more multipliers (Attack Speed, Crit) compared to magic damage and auto-attacks cannot be avoided.
  • If you find yourself dying to magic damage, you may want to work on your positioning. It's possible to be disruptive without being in range of all their damage.

Thank you for the comments and help. Since this post have tried out many build in this manner and I have done better as the tank. Serving in death as I watch my team cut them down.
