He just destroys me everytime. Even if i manage to come out ahead in farm and pull off a kill he suddenly just skyrockets from being even to untouchable once we hit 6

The best answer I can give is "play Malzahar."

Zhonyas helps, but you're not gonna get one before he hits 6 and murders your ass. Better to have a champion who spikes even harder at 6.

as malz mid, when he presses R you W yourself, then spam R till he spawns in lane do your normal E farm thing. he's my only mid though so idk what anyone else should do.

any particular reason you don't try to drop Q on yourself so he gets hit as soon as he finishes being untargetable?

Well the point of zed is to wreck most old school mages who are poor against mobility. The thing is though even if you get destroyed as a mage, you can still potentially offer more in mid late game if you play it out and make game changing plays such as a good ori ult. Sure that 10-1 talon or zed might be good at deleting one squishy but you are prepared with your zhonya and your adc with a qss and in teamfights you can do your part.
