Top Picks

So this is something I noticed quite a lot in my draft pick games, but whenever someone from my team goes like teemo top or any other ranged top champion, the enemy team top laner does NOT pick a tank/melee to go up against that, they always seem to pick ranged top like quinn or kennen etc against our own ranged top champ. Why is this the case?

Because it just feels awful to be a melee against ranged.

Like even though I can take Sion and powerbomb a Teemo, it's just not FUN to spend 90% of lane getting poked at for free, blinded whenever I go for a cannon creep, and just to deal with ranged in general in this high-damage meta.

Don't get me wrong. I DO still go melee, because I know I'm giving up lane for teamfights and I'm making the better investment by far. In fact, teamfighting is my favorite thing about this game, so for me it's honestly not that big a loss to do it. But I understand why people wouldn't want to give up any semblance of fun in the lane just to win the game. What good is it to play a game that's not fun, you know?

So you are stating that people are picking other ranged champs against ranged champs in top lane just because it's awful to play melee against ranged? We had a teemo last game and the enemy top laner picked quinn against it, so I was wondering why he would pick that champ since that's like preventing a tank pick on their team.

So what benefit would you gain if you picked another ranged top against an enemy teemo such as Quinn for example? Wouldn't your team lose a tank in the process? What advantage does it give you if you pick another ranged champ like quinn against teemo?

The same advantage picking Teemo gives for your team?

You trade away teamfight potential for the chance to take control of the laning phase decisively and shut down a member of the enemy team. And, on the plus side, if you know the enemy team has a Teemo top, sure, you're giving up a potential tank spot, but the enemy team's already done that too.

There's also the fact that different champions allow for different parameters. Teemo in top lane loses the teamfight potential of a tank, but gains a relatively safe splitpushing pattern where his shrooms protect him and it becomes difficult for enemies to flank him and stop him. Quinn gives up the same teamfight, but instead of a safer splitpushing pattern, she gains massive roaming and catching potential with her ultimate. Jayce doesn't offer a splitpushing pattern, but he transitions to powerful poke and a better teamfight than Quinn or Teemo. And so on and so on.

So there could be more practical reasons than simply not having fun playing against Teemo when you can't fight back. I'm just suggesting that 'boring' is part of the reason.

so the enemy team picking another top ranged champion like quinn against our top laner's teemo, what benefit does that give them over our teemo? Sure we both don't have tanks, but aside from that, what benefit does quinn give them against our teemo?

What's the benefit of Teemo against Quinn?

Ah, I see you misunderstood me! I mean that the enemy team always picked other ranged tops like quinn whenever they saw our team pick teemo

SuperLuigiLXIV1 votes

No, I didn't. I understood you perfectly.

I asked you what advantage Teemo has over Quinn.

Teemo is AP I believe, and has like blind and shrooms.

You've been given your answer several times and I'm honestly not sure if you're trolling or legitimately retarded at this point.

Melee into ranged sucks, even when the melee has the potential to "win" the lane.

Specific MU's aside, the biggest advantage which picking a ranged top into another ranged top is that it eliminates free poke. Quinn can CS from max distance effectively, which forces Teemo forwards to poke; which in turn forces him to take minion aggro (free damage) and prime himself for a gank.

This is in counter point to playing a melee top into Teemo, like say Darius. Darius would have to walk up to a creep wave to CS, thereby allowing Teemo to poke himself with minimal repositioning (not making himself gank vulnerable) and minimal blow-back from minion aggro. This is even more note worthy when a melee top tries to go for the caster minions vs a ranged top, as that frequently forces them past the melee minions and into prime poke range.

It's kinda unfair for the teemo player to have another ranged champ picked against him in lane, I for one would be very frustrated seeing like a quinn or other ranged top champ picked against me when I pick teemo. It just sucks...

Okay, so you're just a troll.

Got it.

Teemo is especially good against melee matchups - so if the enemy top laners has to chance to pick after Teemo, they won't pick themselves in an disadvantageous matchup.

so why do the teams always pick like another ranged champion against our own ranged champion? For example, last game, our top picked teemo, enemy top picked quinn, what is the purpose of that? Why didn't they just pick like melee or tank is what i was asking.

I know that, but why do they pick quinn / kennen / other ranged top ? how is that better over a tank/melee?

Why don't you pick Soraka into Zed in middle lane? Because it's bad.
