Will Galio be Unbalanced on Release? : A Community Poll and Civil Discussion

Hey guys, Onwodori here.

**Skip to section 2 for a break down of his new skills and discussion! **

Out of the community, I feel confident in saying that I am familiar and have great affections towards Galio

He, along with Gangplank and Shaco have been my mains since essentially early season 4, their blend of quirkiness and once simplicity very appealing to a budding gamer. I'll spare you any more dialogue, but I find it's nice to lead with.

In short here after, I have the basis to say that I am extraordinarily satisfied and happy with these Galio changes, his underlying character (the lighthearted but, upon closer inspection, deeply haunted magic creation) remaining largely the same as well as kind nods in his kit back towards what will soon be a memory.

However, I am concerned he might come out of the gate needing some hot fixes immediately and, having mentioned that I am a Gangplank player, it is understandable how nervous trimming power of a champion can be.

Concisely, because I do not feel like doing large amounts of math being three whiskeys deep --

Passive: Galio now gains an empowered, AOE auto attack on a static 8 second charge which landing a skill (Q, W ?, E and R) on an enemy reduces the timer by a static 4, this allowed to happen only once. This empowered auto scales with his MR, the last remaining offensive MR scaling in his kit, and a flat, scaling by level amount.

Q: Galio sends out two converging skill shots in an arc, these skill shots doing magic damage based off of AP and creating an area when they collide that persists for 1.5 seconds. This area does percentage magic damage instead and also scales with AP.

W: Galio passively gains a shield that recharges out of combat.

On cast, Galio slows himself but takes reduce damage and on second cast taunts and area around him between .5 and 1.5 seconds based on how long you channeled the first portion. The duration of his damage reduction is refreshed by 4 seconds if he taunts an enemy champion. The percentage of damage reduction scales off of his bonus Armor and MR

Note: This is likely where nerfs will be needed in my opinion.

E: Galio hops back and channels for a moment before dashing in a direction. Cannot dash over walls or terrain and on colliding with a champion or large / epic monster (?) Deals magic damage that scales with AP and knocks up targets hit.

R: In a large area, Galio can select an allied champion and create an area of damage reduction around them before channeling for 2 seconds and flying to that location, landing with a large area of effect knock up and damage. This damage reduction for your allies scales identically to your W.

Conclusion: His ability to get perpetually tankier and make damage deals tanky is probably too much - he has too much utility and damage right now. He likely has a high skill cap but some things will need to be sapped.

Thank you and I drink to your health and Galio's with whiskey number four,

looking at how people have been doing on the PBE, he's probably too strong.

Already been nerfed damage wise, and the duration on the extension of his damage reduction has been cut in half. Even had an ap ratio added to his Passive to make getting ap better. In the PBE update Monday, he's getting his armor ratios removed on his damage reduction for his W and his ult, so those are some pretty big hits.

May be too hard lol, but I am not certain.

Who knows, we don't know any definitive builds or skill ceilings for him yet. Its hard to say something is broken when people are locking him in as jungle and are playing with 100 ms on the PBE. I remember when the PBE playerbase said aurelion sol would be a broken jungler....

Galio is actually getting nerfed pretty hard on the PBE.

I'm not personally sure how he'll come out initially, but, I've mostly been riding on the expectation that he'll come out just right since he's been worked on by the same people who did Yorick - who, as far as I've seen (and, I could be wrong, memory doesn't always serve) has only needed mechanical tweaks and not balance changes.

But, in the same respect, Galio is a whole 'nother plate of a Champion, with some pretty unusual scalings - both Ability Power and Magic Resist scaling being inherent in his kit. That being said, it's fairly likely - 65% chance, if I wanted to give a rough (and still hopeful) estimate - that he may fall on either side of the track, be it somewhat overtuned or somewhat undertuned.

Personally, I want to say that I feel like Galio will hit live, and have the early consensus be he's "underpowered" - largely in part due to the unique input characteristic of his Shield of Durand, much like how it took Warwick players nearly two weeks to adapt to his Jaws of the Beast functionality, but in reality he may be either perfectly balanced (not totally likely, but still hopeful!) or slightly overpowered.
