How a permanent PvE mode could help newer players

Recently Riot has put out some 15 second "Go Noobs" ads on Youtube. The general purpose of the ads were to tell newer players "Things may suck now, they'll get better." Which is fine, I'm not trying to bash these adds, they're good for what they are. But this brings to light one of League's biggest issues and biggest turn offs for potential players, its painfully steep learning curve. I can think of two main issues that create Lol's learning curve;

  1. Lackluster training options for new players
  2. The game's dense amount of information

Firstly, Lol's training options for new players boils down to the tutorial and Co-op versus AI matches. First, Co-op v. AI these game modes pit new players against AI, theoretically until they're ready for real matches. In practice however the AI's don't act enough like real players. I think we can all remember doing some beginner and a few intermediate AI matches, feeling prepared, only to still have no idea what was happening and getting royally whooped are first few real matches. Secondly the tutorial, though it DOES teach you the basics of how to play league, that's about it. There aren't any advanced tutorials on how to jungle, or support, only tutorials on how to play the game.

The second half of this problem is the game's dense amount of info, there's just a lot to take in simply put. Champs, champ strengths and weaknesses, items, stats, how minion waves push, neutral monsters, etc. But after playing for enough time players get a "feel" for how things work, who's good against who, what to build against what, etc. But for newer players that takes time, a lot of time. I remember thinking I had the game just about down, and then I laned against a Mordekaiser and had no idea what to do.

Having a permanent campaign style game mode could help with these issues. Having a campaign where the player plays as a variety of different champs fighting different enemies and completing simple objectives can teach players how the game works. What better way to teach players that champs like Tristana and Jinx are good at taking objectives then having a mission where they have to fight enemies and destroy structures. What better way to show that champs like Garen and Poppy can tank damage then to have a mission where they defend a Demacian convoy from Noxian raiders (Maybe Kled as a boss?). Funny enough there's one other game franchise that embraces this idea, Call of Duty. In Cod almost every mission teaches you how to complete some aspect of multi-player. The MW1 mission "All Guilied Up" that teaches you how to play stealthy and snipe. The MW3 mission in the submarine teaches you how to fight in tight spaces. The Black Ops 1 jungle mission that teaches you how to fight in open spaces. The MW2 mission with the AC-130 that teaches you how to use kill streaks. And it works, I felt more prepared for multiplayer after completing the MW3 campaign (P.S. SOAP!) These missions can help prepare new players for what the game is like in a low stress environment.

TLDR?: A permanent campaign style game mode could help newer players learn the ropes of the game in a fun, creative, and stress-less way.

Great idea. This reminds me of Starcraft 2 campaign where it starts you off with the basics and introduces more complex gameplay as you move along.

That's what I was thinking (though I've never played the Starcraft games [sg-lulu] ). Not to mention a campaign mode could also give veteran players something else to do. It's fun for all players!

LoL already has one of those. I build item 3075 on Ashe everygame

Maybe have the tutorial not tell you to build thornmail on Ashe? Just an idea.

League has needed a starter campaign, better tutorial, just something else, for ages now. Riot needs to understand when you invest in your new players, you are more likely to get a better long term fanbase. The start up to way to harsh for new players and now those new players will be rushing into games a lot more often, with less time and experience to back them up.

and then I laned against a Mordekaiser and had no idea what to do.

Well...to be fair, nobody really knows what to do against Morde. Nobody ever sees him, so learning how to counter him is like learning how to counter Skarner.

Although we do need a better tutorial. Maybe finally having Ashe buy something besides Thornmail would help...

TT player.

Had to learn how to counter Skarner and I still have no idea how once he gets the ball rolling ;-;

To counter Skarner do not fight the Totems he controls. That is where majority of his damage comes from since it increases his Attack speed and Regens mana for infi mana.

Kloqdq1 votes

Well yeah I knew that part xD.

Xion The XIV1 votes

Another part is to invade him early. He is worthless solo until he gets the Triforce. Get him constantly before the Trifoce and he will become garbage. Have someone near the lane to constantly take his totems. He is forced to retake them to JG so you will constantly know where he is in his JG. Sadly it's not hard to counter Skarner early on. T_T Miss playing my purple scorpion.

I think for TT it is pretty difficult to punishment early on as much as you could on Rift. Laners can react to jungle pressure far faster and the placement of the totems are in really good spots for him early. He is for sure one of the better junglers on there.

What Ads? Do you have a link ?

zeskgames1 votes

Hmm, seems I'm having trouble finding them myself, those 15 second ones are hard to track. [zombie-brand-facepalm] I've been getting them pretty frequently on youtube, but I can't seem to dig up a link. Sorry my guy (or girl).

Before I started playing, I just read a Lott about how the game works, position and blah blah blah. I don't get how you can realistically get into the game, it's like you play quite a few games before you get into the "actual" game first, items and stuff Will be confusing if you didn't play any games prior to lol. I could imagine somebody playing lol as their first gaming and dropping it pretty quickly :/. Game just tells you to destroy the nexus and then says good luck.

Like this idea, though can see it eating up quite a few resources. Not saying it wouldn't be worth it - probably quite a few players who tried LoL but hit that wall. Another option would be a hard bot mode with improved AI and a jungle champ that ganks.

zeskgames2 votes

A hard AI mode could be a start, but a campaign mode offers more than just difficulty. Simply put a campaign mode is more appealing to players than a hard AI mode. Think of it this way with the Cod example. If when you started Modern Warfare and all it gave you were a easy, normal, and hard tutorial to play before thrusting you into multiplayer, I personally wouldn't have been as invested in the game because I wasn't given the chance to become invested in the game in the way a campaign can. Also it would give us lore fans something to sink our teeth into.

How about Practice Mode but... better?

zeskgames1 votes

I think practice mode is more catered to more experienced players to help them hone their skills, I wouldn't really count it as something for newer players who are still learning the ropes.

It's not the lack of designated game play it's that players don't play to improve. Majority of players just play to play and believe they are godsends. This is what these players should be doing:

Bots- Beginners ARAM- Team fighting, adapting to team comps, adapting to champions Normal- Game basics: laning, jungling, objective control, warding, etc, etc Draft- Serious but not too serious game play Ranked- not playing this crap until they've played at least 500 games in everything else

zeskgames1 votes

I feel like your missing the point of the argument, what you're suggesting is just redesigning the entrance requirements for the already available game modes, which may be inherently flawed. I for one play draft mode instead of normals, not because I'm a serious player, but because I like being able to ban out champs I don't like fighting against. What a campaign can offer is a creative, fun, and interactive way to teach players how to play before they go into a multiplayer environment. While still being accessible and enjoyable for the more experienced player base.

Is this directed at me?

Cause if it is,

My comment is just to address that of, "We don't have enough learning diversity/tools."

To address the LOL Campaign subject,

This would be a massive undertaking requiring at least a years worth of time if not more. This is just simply due to fleshing out a lot (and I mean a lot) of the game's lore. If it's just to teach the basics of the game then it'd just be like the tutorial we have now. If it were to be like so it would be pointless and a waste of time to make. Players are just better off playing the actual different game modes, and like so as I stated for each different purpose.

zeskgames1 votes

Though the creation of a campaign is a massive undertaking, it would be a worthwhile one. Having a campaign could draw in more players, give veteran players something new to experience, and of course would just be fun to play. I understand the concern of it being hard to "Flesh out" the campaign so that it matches lore, but Riot has done a great job with lore so far, from their animated shorts, to their comics, to the pages and pages of lore on the Universe page. I'm not saying the story has to be "best story of the year" material, but as long as it's decent then me and a lot of other players will be entertained.

It just depends on how it's all handled. If campaign mode is a separate mode from training then it'd be pretty pointless to make two whole different modes. Campaign mode would need to have pacing set in and would have to take precedent over the actual game itself. When players first start the game they would need to be barred from regular gameplay until they finished campaign mode, or they just simply state they are a veteran player to bypass this.

Ex. Fight for the Freljord Choose a side by picking a champion aligned to Ashe or Sejuani -Split into 4 different games

-Game 1 Howling Abyss Player vs AI ---Win: Kill 70+ minions before 10:00 ---Lose: Enemy kills more minions than you ---70 = pass/ 80 = good/ 90 = excellent/ 100 = perfect ---Loot: Unlock a summoner icon based on results

-Game 2 Unlock by winning Game 1 -Game 2 Howling Abyss Player vs AI ---Win: Destroy more structures than enemy before 20:00 ---Lose: Destroy less structures ---Loot: Unlock a summoner icon based on results

-Game 3 unlock by winning Game 2 -Game 3 Twisted Treeline (with Freljord theme) 3 v 3 co-op or solo ---Win: Destroy enemy Nexus ---Lose: Your Nexus is destroyed ---Loot: Unlock summoner icon, one time only, unlock unowned Freljord champion or +1350 IP

-Game 4 unlock by winning Game 3 -Game 4 Summoner's Rift (with Freljord theme) 5 v 5 co-op or solo ---Win: Destroy enemy Nexus ---Lose: Your Nexus is destroyed ---Loot: Unlock summoner icon, one time only, +1 Hextech chest and Freljord champion unlock or +2700 IP

You can also have something else like a real time game mode: Ex. -Choose your side: Noxus or Demacia ---You cannot change factions until reset -5 v 5 Noxus vs Demacia ---Wins = +Points to faction total ---Losses = -Points to faction total -After 1 week faction with the highest amount of points wins ---Players of winning faction are rewarded various prizes hextech boxes, hexkeys, hexkey fragments, random champion shards ---Players of losing faction are rewarded temporary IP boost, XP boost, summoner icons

See what you are thinking of doing is just adding campaign themed missions over normal games. What I'm thinking of doing is creating an entirely separate game mode with it's own different objectives and enemies to fight. Also you seem dead-set on the idea of restricting players to certain gamemodes, and I think that's not the right way to look at things. We should look at a campaign as a fun alternative to AI and tutorial matches.

For example (As stated in the post): An escort mission where you play as either Poppy and Garen and protect a convoy from Noxian raiders. This could teach players that those two champs are good at tanking damage for those who can't in a fun way.

I remember a friend of mine stared League just because of the Invasion mode. He just spammed it after getting to level 10, and it actually taught a good deal on mechanics, teamwork, and prioritization of enemies.

I know the objectives of that mode is very different from the usual SR game, but it definitely taught way more than what the Co-op vs AI modes do.

The game could actually benefit from ALL of it's custom games being made available at all times, instead of being vaulted in some dungeon somewhere. During the last AR URF, my friends list didn't dip below 21, FOR 2 FULL WEEKS. Since it left, the max has been 6 people. That's a big deal.

They should unlock pve for new players to play as they please, and give us URF, Hexakill, One For All, etc for the players who prefer those to ranked. Why throw a new player at the Diamond smurfs? Why try and force the hardcore player into Nexus Siege?

League of Legends and mobas were created from custom games, so it blows my fucking mind that Riot is so against us playing custom game modes. I play SC2 more than I play League atm, because there are so many cool custom games to fuck around on with friends, and my circle of friends is burned out on SR after 8 years on it.

It's time to open the vault, and let us choose what we want to be playing.

I feel smurfs are a bad issue with new players. Assuming smurfs win all the time it doesn't take much for a new player vs other new players to end up playing vs smurfs or with smurfs. I had a friend tried to get into the game but she was constantly up vs and with smurfs who sucked btw, but they were enough to bully her and she was just not grasping the game at that rate. She eventually just gave up as she was not seeing the fun of it.

zeskgames1 votes

Smurfs are a problem to newer players, and having a campaign mode where everyone is on the same team vs AI could help solve this problem. I don't think there were any problems with smurf accounts in the SG event.

Xion The XIV1 votes

Or you know make it so Bots are getting banned faster. Been trying to level up a second account and holy damn. 5x games and only 1 game I have had a single player that was not a bot. But then again these Bot's in AI games teaches the new players about the trolls they will meet later on. So it's a give and take.

That and having a campaign would be great right?

what they need to do is monitor new accounts better, 90% of new accounts are high tier smurfs, i made a new account on euw for fun (only b2 on na anyway) and im level 18 on that account and havent had i single game of pvp that wasnt 3 plat+ smurfs with names for their one trick in their user its cancer and i cant imagine actual new players having to deal with that garbage

zeskgames1 votes

Smurfs ARE a problem, but not in the context of a campaign. In a campaign gamemode, against AIs it shouldn't matter that much which real players are better.
