The Support Items Have a Pretty Damning Flaw

Is there any particular rational reason why the support items gold generation actually just switches off late game? Sure, we don't have to buy the upgrades anymore but that means past the first thousand gold generation most supports have no possible method of earning income outside of assists. There is nothing quite like being handicapped late game because you can no longer sustain yourself off of minion procs or you lose the bonus damage as well as the gold generation.

Getting to my third item and boots and then just having two open item slots until the 45-minute mark. "But, but Clooooak, you can just farm minion waves!" Yeah, lemme just farm minions with Alistar I'll see you guys in 2024 when I manage to actually kill a single super minion. Especially when I'm fighting my carries for them.

And god forbid you're a decent support main who values vision and are buying pink wards frequently late game like you should be. You will probably negate most of what little gold generation you have. I don't see the point. Excessive minion kills are already nerfed by the item, there's no reason to shut it off. I know some people were complaining about getting 2 gold a minion late game thanks to the support item but the easy fix is to have the minion kills hurt your support item gold not the other way around. This will keep people from abusing the thing without cutting support players off at the knee.

This is a trend with support items that I'm tired of. "Oh, is someone not-support abusing a support item? Should we think of a unique or creative way to solve the solution? Nope, just castrate the entire role to fix a problem in another lane."

I'm not sure why it's disabled at all, period. Before this season, I would earn an average of 1300-1800g (depending on game length). Now, you just earn 1000g and have to depend on assists entirely, and the occasional rare moment you get to farm minions (when you're defending or taking the last hit when no one is around).

idk what you're talking about, the gold generation passive persists forever until you ditch the item.

Gold/sec passive still works even after the initial 1000 gold. And yes, it basically gives 2k+ gold, both gold itself and free stats. Sure, there were games when support item gave more gold overall, but it gives its gold later, while current one gives/saves gold earlier, when it matters more And control wards cost at most around 75 gold every 2-3 mins, so the support item itself pays for your wards enough.

Cutting the gold off was necessary to keep the support role from being overrun with damage mages.

The problem that was happening season 9 is that damage mages would use frostfang to generate gold early and often, and they were opting into high damage expensive items because they were generating too much gold over the course of the game. Think of someone like Morgana who has an easy task of hitting with w to get gold procs, and could continue to do this easily all game long.

Now if you take someone who can easily proc it you can get your gold earlier than your opponent support, but if you want to go into a high cost build you better be getting kills and not just spamming a difficult to miss ability. Otherwise you stall out, and the support who is building support items will get more items than you.

Dont supports usually have three items + support item + boots + control wards. Also you still get the gold per 5.
