Suggestions for Base Movement Speed

Hi! I'm Takashi Suzuki, just an average League player. I have tended to notice that the "good" champions in the game have a lot going for them. In fact, to me, it seems that a general problem is that base movement speed doesn't seem too balanced, with some of the most mobile champions boasting some of the highest movement speed, further hurting immobile ranged champions and immobile melee alike. Here I have compiled a suggested new movement speed tiering which features movement speed costs for: range, mobility, and CC.

League New Suggested Movement Speeds (mostly in alphabetized order):

===Bottom=== These champions all have one thing in common, they are ADCs with 550 or greater range with good mobility... and Lucian.

320: Caitlyn, Corki, Ezreal, Kalista, Lucian, Tristana, Twitch

===Low=== ADCs with decent mobility are placed here, along with ranged mages that have high mobility.

325: Ahri, Azir, Gnar, Graves, LeBlanc, Lissandra, Miss Fortune, Quinn, Vayne, Ziggs

===Below Average=== Immobile ranged champions are placed here. Melee champions with excessive mobility* in their kit are placed here.

330: Akali, Anivia, Annie, Ashe, Brand, Cassiopeia Draven, Fiddlesticks, Fizz, Heimerdinger, Janna, Jinx, Karma, Karthus, Kassadin, Kennen, Kog'Maw, Lee Sin, Lulu, Lux, Malzahar, Morgana, Nami, Orianna, Rek'Sai, Riven, Ryze, Sivir, Sona, Soraka, Syndra, Swain, Teemo, Twisted Fate, Urgot, Varus, Veigar, Vel'Koz, Viktor, Vladimir, Xerath, Yasuo, Zed, Zilean, Zyra

===Average=== Melee champions that are oppressive with high speed (Alistar, for example) are here. Also melee champions with a direction-based dash are placed here.

335: Aatrox, Alistar, Elise, Gragas, Jarvan IV, Kayle, Malphite, Nidalee, Rek'Sai, Renekton, Sejuani, Shaco, Shen, Thresh, Tryndamere, Vi, Zac

===Above Average=== Melee champions with targeted dashes are placed here. Melee with movement speed boosts are placed here.

340: Amumu, Blitzcrank, Braum, Diana, Evelynn, Fiora, Galio, Gangplank, Garen, Hecarim, Irelia, Jax, Jayce, Katarina, Leona, Maokai, Master Yi, Nautilus, Nunu, Pantheon, Poppy, Rammus, Rengar, Rumble, Shyvana, Singed, Skarner, Trundle, Udyr, Volibear, Wukong, Xin Zhao

===High=== Melee champions with mobility on a high cooldown are placed here. Immobile melee champions with CC are placed here.

345: Cho'Gath, Darius, Mundo, Nasus, Nocturne, Olaf, Sion, Taric, Warwick, Yorick

===Top=== Melee champion(s) with no mobility or CC are placed here.

350: Mordekaiser

*Excessive mobility deemed as multiple dashes/blinks that have freedom in their nature. For example:

  • Lee Sin has his Q and W which can be used mid-dash, giving him a plethora of options
  • Fiora can only dash twice in quick succession, limiting the freedom of her dashes

Notable exceptions to the rules listed under the tiers:

Vayne - In past iterations of Vayne, she really got hurt when her movement speed was at the same level as the other mobile ADCs, and she is based around being able to hunt enemies down, so her movement speed has to be a bit higher to keep up with people like Caitlyn.

Kayle/Nidalee/Elise/Jayce - These all have ranged forms. However, if their movement speed was 430 (the max for ranged) I feel that their melee counterpart would see even less play that before.

Most notable differences from current movement tiers in League:

Ranged mages have far less average movespeed than before. Immobile ADCs are, in general, helped out by this new suggested listing (against more mobile ADCs). Clearer difference between what speeds are acceptable for melee and ranged champions. Adds real cost to having high mobility or high range.

Please note that if Riot were ever to, for some reason, do these changes, some balancing would have to occur for some champions.

Thoughts/suggestions? Feel free to reply!

That terrifying moment when Darius is able to outrun you.

Good thought in theory, but highly flawed execution.

For one, movement speed is not only based on the champion's kit, but also on his supposed nature and feel. For example, that is why Nautilus has 325 base MS - and why Xypherous initially projected him to have EVEN LOWER MS (until Live Balance objected). Or why Mordekaiser has 340 MS (which is, by the way, the above average value currently) - he's a friggin' hulkin' suit of armor, after all. You will also notice all the ice-based champions tend to have low movement speeds, which fits with their purposed theme. Of course, there are also those champions who have low MS for gameplay purposes - Anivia comes to mind here. That bird has an incredible amount of control and damage within her sphere of influence, not to mention 600 base attack range.

Barring a few exceptions (hello LeeSin , and even for him it fits with his mobility theme), the current MS system is in a healthy place.
