The "NA Network Roadmap" Thing - West Coast POV
**My thoughts on the NA server location change thing. ** (Warning: I'm pretty offended by these changes, but you probably already guessed that from my username. I also used some "adult language", so yeah. You were warned.)
- I'm going to be straight up, I currently live in Portland, Oregon about 3 miles from the NA servers. I average between 14 and 26ms ping and know how lucky I was. Roughly three weeks ago I noticed a spike in my ping. However the increase was so dramatic, averaging around 140ms, that I just assumed Comcast (ew.. but then again, what ISP besides Google Fiber isn't ew amirite) was having a bad day. However some of my buddies were also having terrible ping who were on Verizon FIOS, TWC, and other providers. Two days later and the ping was still awful but I was fed up with waiting to play ranked and "YOLO'ed" it, something I never recommend when having connection troubles. My ping was perfect, slipping down to the usual 26ms. That's when I knew Rito was being fucky. (That's a new adjective, m'kay?) Only days later the NA Roadmap post was published with the promise of "40-80ms ping on the West Coast". Yeah right. If you go back to my postings from 2014 you'll notice I have been asking Rito for a Midwest or East Coast server for over a year. However the "moving" of the West Coast server was not what I had in mind.
Here are some ideas I've had in the past for how the addition of a new server could play out:
- A second Midwest/EC server is set up and games are sorted by ping during the matchmaking process. This would provide everyone the ping they want/deserve to play with while preventing certain individuals (or geographic masses) from getting shafted.
- A second Midwest/EC server is set up and players can switch between the West Coast and East Coast servers for the normal RP changing fee. This way ping does not play a role in the matchmaking process preventing the addition of an increased workload on the Rito toasters.
- Move the NA server to a centralized location effectively throwing all West Coast players under the bus and busting a cap in Hawaii and Alaska's respective assholes. (What Rito is doing right now)
Lastly, I want to thank Rito for being so transparent as of late. I appreciate the strides that have been taken to get closer and interact with the community, keeping us in the loop and all that jazz.
Feel free to contribute your thoughts/ideas below as I am genuinely curious about people's opinions on this huge change in the NA scene.
Hope this wasn't too offensive, Offended
