TL;DR : The "Soft Reset" Fiasco
Riot made a mistake calling this whole fiasco a "soft reset"
Summoners thought of marshmallows & pillows when they thought "soft".
This is definitely not a soft reset, but also isn't exactly a hard reset.
It's more of like... Smart hard reset
Personally I would have had absolutely no problem knowing I'd be placed in Bronze V at the start of the season. I'd carry with LeBlanc jungle, rush IE & go 15-3 & freelo all the way up to Gold. No problem all in a day's work.
But giving me the hope of going doing well (e.g. 7-3) in placements, & getting back to Gold to continue my journey to plat by saying its a "soft" reset was cruel.
This reset has been as soft as rammus for a large portion of the community.
