Amumu question

Hey all, so Amumu is still weak as heck but whatever, he's a jungle tank with AP and one of the few true tanks.

Anyway, I'm trying to practice with him and get him set up this season and have a few questions.

  1. I'm going Resolve ->Aftershock->Demolish->Conditioning->Overgrowth. I don't think there are any other options here? Font of life, even on Amumu is pretty worthless, so I may as well try to chunk towers when I gank.
  2. The secondary is a bit tougher a decision, but am looking at Sorcery->Trancendence->Waterwalking. Nullifying orb seems too weak, and nothing else feels great. Am open to ideas though. In addition if the enemy is mage heavy (In this day and age yeah right, I could easily end up over CDR cap) I guess other option would be Inspiration->Magical Footwear->Cosmic Insight

Big question though: Offense/Flex/Defense. Am going 5/5 armor to add a bit of JG sustain, but am torn on Offense between 1-10% CDR, which is definitely crap until late game where it becomes 10% CDR or 20 AP, then it's kind of okay. I mean it feels like the right thing for Amumu, but then there's 9% attack speed, and I feel like this is much better to help with JG clear speed early, and maybe even use that to get ahead enough to be equivalent to 10% CDR late game. Plus maybe even 1 extra swing in ganks could make all the difference.

Is my gut instinct right in that I should be doing Attack Speed, not CDR? Also, any other advice would help, Amumu is super difficult in silver since they removed the green JG item as allies absolutely will not ward jungle entrances.

Font of Life might actually be the better rune for Amumu. While we will miss Bone Plating on that slot, the CC from his Q and R will allow your teammates to proc off of it. Out of the 5 roles, you'll be the one pushing the towers the least anyway.

Attack speed is kind of worthless to Amumu. He does his consistent damage through his abilities, regardless if you you're Ap or tank. You definitely want CDR so you can stun and freeze everyone more frequently.

With all of the other new changes in mind like secondary runes, that one you'll probably have to decide for yourself, though I do like the sound of the waterwalking and transendence.

The reason I'm super iffy on it is at 3,000 HP it's still what 35 over 2 seconds. 17.5 per second, fights rarely last more than 3-5 seconds. Some champs have higher base HP regen on top of their own sustains, life leech etc. that totally trounce 35hp, and they have a few thousand HP of their own. I don't see it really impacting any given fight outside a <1% chance. So to me, trying to grab a demolish here and there after a gank feels like it'll have more of an overall game impact. It's not blowing up any skirts really, but I feel like it's still more than Font of Life would ever do.

Last two games in case anyone was wondering. A note: Second game I got "league has stopped working" as I approached an inhib tower, so Demolish should have been quite a bit higher.

Seems like demolish definitely put some work in. Transcendence isn't bringing me to 40%+, games are feeling super short with no tower defense, but the 10% is certainly a nice spike at 10.

The +10 armor runes have a strong visible impact on Amumus early game JG.

Was running CDR on the 3rd for this rather than Aspd.

Oh right, I forgot there's also Adaptive Force, which tbh is somewhat equivalent to 1-10% CDR late game if I go over 40% CDR, and early game might do a bit more damage but no CDR. I feel like the ASPD on Amumu base AD is still better early though.

Actually just talking about it now I feel like Aspd>Adaptive force>CDR unless Riot changes the CDR to be 1-10% where it's 1% per level up to 10 rather than needing max level to get to 10%. But would appreciate any input.

It is really going to come down to how you want to play and build. You can look at your item sets and get a rough idea of how you may want to build Mumu. If you think you get enough cdr by the end, then go atk spd for clear.

As for runes, Font can actually be really suprising if you plan on getting a item 3116, which with W makes it so enemies will be your friend for all eternity (or until they die). Secondary there could be flexibility again depending on what build you are thinking. I usually go domination and take Ghost Poro and either Bounty Hunter Ultimate CD/or mag pen after dash (Q)

I don't claim to be a even remotely good jungle, but I do take pride in knowing some good start locations for certain ones. For Amumu, you can start at chickens(raptors) with your E and hunters talisman without the need of a leash.

Don't be afraid of using the practice tool to get a rough idea for pathing and damage output on camps.

Just checked in test, adaptive force is 10 AP or 6 AD even though it just says "10 adaptive force" so definitely nixing the adaptive force idea entirely. I thought it was 10/20 AD/AP like some other abilities, Riot is super unclear on these things.

I usually start with W/Leash because it's just how people play in silver and can take out bottom buff and lvl up getting E for raptors/wolves.

I was going to try to phase out Rylais which has always been in my core, but I think you're right tbh, at this MMR once you're on them with rylais and tears, they just never escape when they otherwise could so I'll leave it in.

Core am looking at this:

The secondary items highly dependent on enemy team. The ones I'll want to lean on most depending on enemy team would be Frozen Heart or Abyssal Mask, depending on the enemy team, with the last item being situational, though I always love Gargoyle Stoneplate to round things out. As amumu despite weak early, I feel I can usually hang onto and turn games around later despite his late game low win rate stats.

The main reason I wanted to phase Rylais out is simply because Rylais/Liandries on top of cinderhulk cost a ton, and up until then it's all hp and very little MRes/Armor, which means I feel like I'm always playing for super late game, and liandries is a must to prevent being ignored. But again, I'll continue this way as I think you're absolutely tight about Rylais utility on Amumu.

Well, if you want sticking power, you don't need Rylais. 40% (or 45% if inspiration) cdr and max Q will let you stick to the enemy just as well.

Yeah, that's what I was hoping, just basically if I can essentially do it without rylais as a crutch, the overall result would be better. It in a way feels like old clarity which was more a crutch than power. At the same time, flashing into an enemy/few enemies with it can devastate them if you're on cooldown and they blew everything to escape, or just are very mobile champions in general. I'll have to try some with and some without and just see what happens.

Oh and because the game is super AD heavy and Frozen heart is 20% CDR and 100 armor, I think it'll be in most my games going forward.

I doubt I'll touch Zhonyas at all, doesn't feel right on Amumu and has no hitpoints attached. Same goes for Z'zrot portal as I don't see it ever trumping the Gargoyle Stoneplate. The others are all definite possibilities depending. They're just there as ideas for now.

Am not sure what kind of team composition Warmogs would ever come into play against either. Maybe just a team with a lot of burst champs where the health will be really effective without tons of armor/mres. Spirat Visage if I have a decent healer. The rest would be dependant.
