How good is average, really?

I'm trying to figure out where, precisely, the average player is in terms of rank. I've heard anywhere from mid Bronze to high Silver (and one person claiming Platinum for some reason), but no real consensus. Therefore, I thought it would be a good idea to take a survey which will hopefully settle the question.

I have another poll that can be found here. In it, I am trying to find out what people consider the average rank to be, rather than what it actually is. It would be really helpful if you could participate in both!

we already know average, its silver 5.

this poll is biased because, not everyone is voting, people can lie about their rank and who wouldn't say they are a little higher up, and finally more than 50% of the playerbase is unraked. making the ladder the biggest unknown ever.

because im sure the majority of unranked players would be better than bronze.

if you want to talk about average skill, its low gold, thats when people have at least some knowledge of the game, CAN work together, and understand the core concepts of last hitting/objective taking/grouping up + gold is power.

The ranked distribution is a positive skewed, unimodal distribution. The median ELO has varied over time; if I recall correctly, currently it's in the middle of silver.

You can use services like na.op.gg, whatismymmr.com, and www.leagueofgraphs.com for more information.

Average is about silverish.

Its really hard to call somebody "average" when there's a lot of factors whether its ping, the skill level on a certain champion they play well, and whether or not they're climbing.

Theorectically, mid silver is adverage but if I see an azir or kindred player feed hard in mid silver, I wouldn't call them below adverage since it could either be a bad game or new at the champions. If they're gods at azir and get pentas but are still in silver, I wouldn't call them just adverage, they'd be mechanically about their elo but perhaps not decision making wise.

Lets be honest, how many norm games have you seen a diamond and silver lane against each other and the diamond feed hard? My answer is way too many, so I wouldn't say "above average" means anything. I never adveraged myself to anybody, I'm my own group called "me".

Roughly Silver 4.

50% and over is normally considered average. If you're better than 50% of players, you're considered average. This ranges anywhere between Bronze 2 - Gold V tbh.

But average is all relativity. Average relative to what? There are below average people in all Elo -- Bronze - Challenege -- in a variety of aspects. For instance, not all Challenger players are mechanical gods, they get there because of how insanely good their macro management is (think trick2g, plays 0 mechanical champs and climbs just through sheer game knowledge). There are also people who have really terrible macro management and climb solely based on mechanics (gosu can be a good example of this one). Each person has a niche that they fill and some people do it really well. Others may be knowledgeable, but lack the methods of execution to put their knowledge to good use.

It's all just food for thought, though. The question is, what do YOU consider average? A challenger player could consider Diamond the norm or the average Elo people should strive for. Golds think low-mid silver is average, it's all relative to a person's rank and perception of the game. I think Silver is the average Elo, and it's my starting point.

Are you asking which rank has the largest number of players by far such that when you take all of the players, somehow quantified their skill, and divided you would get that Rank?

Or are you asking what is the first Rank that has players that are better than 50% of the player base?

So in mathematical terms, is this the mean or the median (assuming skill can be quantified)?

Also, are we considering the the Unranked or just those who are Ranked? Because if you counted all players, the average would be Low Silver. Whereas if you counted only Ranked, it would be higher (maybe mid Silver). Normal games are a JOKE compared to ranked.
