Why the Popularity of Support is Hurting Dynamic Queue

Sulghunter··4 votes·1,903 views

One of the problems with Dynamic Queue, as has been noted numerous times, is the length of waits people have to endure to use the new system. This is because the new match making system works upon the roles people choose, with support being chosen the least often by anyone, save for a few.

This problem has been seen when team builder was running, you would pick your roles, and depending upon which role you picked, the queue time would vary, with mid often having the longest wait time, while support had next to no wait time. It was a joke at one time, that just by selecting support, you would be starting a game for 9 other people.

In this, we can see, that a role based match maker system would have the greatest hurdle in selecting someone who actually WANTED to be the support. Even though team builder was not linked to ranked, so few people picked support in a mode where their was nothing on the line beyond the win or loss. I can not speak for anyone else, but I did not like being support because you basically gave up your agency in the game, and gambled upon the skill of your bot lane charge, the ADC. This is why, even now, I still loathe to become the support.

This lack agency is felt even more sharply, now that ranked has been thrown into the system. With one's rank now on the line, one is even less likely to pick support. I pose this question, would you be willing to gamble your LP on the skills of a complete stranger( assuming solo-play)?

This is why the queues are so long, especially in the higher tiers. No one wants to be the support, and in the higher ranks, no one has "carried" their way to gold, plat, diamond, or even challenger, by playing support. Even if you play champs such as Annie or Brand in bot as support, you are still gambling on if your ADC can help bring them down low enough for you to kill the enemy before you run out of mana.

The only reason solo-queue "worked" was because no one could reserve a role, and every match, two poor souls would be shoe horned into the support role, regardless of whether or not they wanted to be the support.

My proposal for a solution, is that no matter what you pick, be it top, mid, jg, or bot(ADC), but not support, you will always have a small chance of being chosen for the support role. This chance would be in neighborhood of 5 to 10 percent. Now, I know forcing people to support is a poor solution, but as it can be easily seen across all ranks, not enough people are picking support, and no one picks fill because that is basically another button for support. A possible solution may be giving supports an incentive, such as more favorable LP gains and losses, but that may not fly with Riot.

Support main here and I have climbed from Silver 5 and am now in my promos for plat (look me up if you don't believe me). While yes a lot of the killing and taking objectives comes from the carries, the support role is vital and when played right, can determine the outcome of the game. After almost 200 games it's not luck that my win% with Janna is 61%. I have played probably 95% if not more of my games as a solo player and support is a role you can climb with (you just have to be skilled at it).

You're right, a trained monkey could have that win%. I did absolutely nothing to get where I am.

How about changing the player count to 4 (Remove Support) or 6 (Dual lanes) :P

If 4, wow everyone is in charge of warding!!! (Prob be most popular on Jung).

If 6, meh... just hexkill....

Ive made several threads about this. Its actually probably the best thing they could do to the meta and it also reduces q times.

What I wonder is whether the DQ waiting times are really that much longer than they were in Team Builder. I can't estimate this myself, as I always queue support.

To be honest, I think they could fix this easily by offering bonuses to support players, my personal favourite being that your A's would count towards chests and mastery (though maybe at an exchange rate, for example five A's is an S or some such). All those people whining about never getting S scores would go support for the easier chests.

Im not sure whats happening right now, but the last weak when queueing Jungle/Support, I actually got at least as much Jungle than Support.

Either Role popularity has changed in EUW or Riot has finally tuned match making to respect primary role selection more.

When you get slotted for jungle, did it take any longer when you get slotted for support?

Duke Anax1 votes

I didn't pay too much attention on that before, but I think it took a while, seems like it no longer instalocks your secondary if there is an open position.

I agree. Fixing the queue time isn't so much a problem with than algorithm than it is incentivising players to go support. Whether it be a band aid (bonus ip to support players) or a more extreme measure. We need more supports.

Honestly, and this is slightly tangential, you don't just rely on the ADC. It's perfectly possible to support the entire team throughout the game, not just one person.

If the top laner gets fed, help them carry. If the jungler is fed up the butt, roam a bit and help them secure objects. It's not just about the ADC, you aren't a glorified babysitter the entire game.

"Supports didn't carry themselves through the ranks."

Ok.
