trading in lane

honestly I suck at it. every time I try to do it, I get blocked by the damn minions and he out trades me. how do I do this better and more reliably?

You're not going to like my answer, but it's honestly the best and most applicable answer possible.

The way you get better and more reliable at trading is to practice.

Maybe we can give you some helpful tips, particularly if you say what kind of champions you play and what lane you prefer, but at the end of the day it's really just up to you to practice it.

^This. The longer you practice the more comfortable laning is for you. You get better idea of how much damage each champion can deal and then you can check how good you are at your predictions and adjust your gameplay accordingly.

Every champion trades differently in lane so there isn't one way to do it. We would need more info to be of any help.

Abusing cooldowns is one way. If you see them use something to farm (like a Morgana or orianna W) then you can go in and try to do some damage while they can't retaliate right away.

Another way is if they're someone like Xerath or Ahri, you can stand outside the minions to make them pick between hitting you with stuff or farming. If they farm or you can dodge their stuff, then you can trade with them better.
