Give us a "Skilled Player" report to handle smurfs

ComeOnAndSlamJam··168 votes·9,730 views

I am bronze 2.

I'm not a smurf, nor am I a delusional bronzie who thinks he should be alongside LCS players. The reason I'm bronze 2 is simple. I'm bronze 2, because I'm bad at League of Legends.

I'm okay with that. I play this game casually, for fun.

Most of the people I regularly play with are also either legitimately bronze, or trying to level their first account up to 30. We almost always play in pre-mades. Needless to say, a bunch of real bronzies and a level 5 player who only plays Ashe and hasn't quite learned not to fight enemies under their turrets will have a really low MMR no matter where you put them. Ranked queue, unranked queue, it doesn't matter. None of us are magically better with friends then we are when we play alone.

80% of the time, My team and I get paired against comparable players. Win or lose, it's a fun game. There is back and forth, there are battles, there is a chance to win, and a chance to lose. There are throws. There are surprise wins. It's a lot of fun.

20% of the time, we get dumped into a game with smurfs. Those games are steamrolls. The enemy smurfs get one trillion kills, win every dragon, keep all their towers and we surrender out at 20. The whole time, we usually get spammed with obnoxious all chat mockery. This is not fun at all. It is a one sided stomp, being done by dickheads who are abusing the matchmaking system to ruin other people's games.

To solve the issue of rampant smurfing, I think that Riot should add a "Skilled Player" report.

A Skilled Player report would work like the Unskilled Player report, but in reverse. No action would be taken against the account (unless they were breaking some bit of the summoner's code), but it would raise the player's MMR, which would push them out of the level they're smurfing at, faster than them just winning a bunch of matches. This would reduce the number of games that a smurf can ruin by playing below their actual skill level.

Seems like a potentially useful addition. Depends on how Riot would plan to use the info.

Uhh, Honestly, I think this is a terrible option, and hear me out: The difference between bronze, silver, gold, etc. is not solely mechanical skill. I used to play in silver 5 and I saw some down right amazing plays. I worked hard on my mechanical skill and after tonnes of dedication to climbing, I only advanced to silver 3. It wasn't until I worked on all my game aspects that I managed to climb to Platinum within a year. What separates good players from mediocre players has many factors---Mechanical skill, game knowledge, champion effectiveness, abusing strengths/weakness of team comps, rotation knowledge, vision control, champion comfort/knowing what you can and can't do, MMR reading, etc. These are all major things that affect where a player sits on the ladder. You can be extremely mechanically skilled, but if you play champions you don't know well, or you over extend with no vision, or don't know how to push your advantages, you will still be placed in a very low elo. So yes, you run into smurfs who might be stronger than you, but they are in that elo for a reason, and sometimes, people have really good games, and you shouldn't report someone for being a good player, that's absurd.

On top of all this though, there is consistency. Some people can play at a platinum level one game, then silver level then next, which may seem unfair, but that is how it is. And quite often, A player can be a Diamond level Draven player, but only plays him 1 in every 4 games, and the other 4 he feeds with a champion he doesn't know, yet you could be stuck with his/her one good Draven game.

So no, having this option would not be a good idea. I see were you are coming from, but it is one of those things that we kind of have to deal with and expect (much like AFK's, DC's). Besides, one game won't swing your MMR enough to be worth reporting and banning someone for, that's just rude. Imagine if you played really well, and then got restricted for being a "skilled player". To me this just doesn't make sense

Good luck in solo Q though, I wish you the best!

I do not think the OP intended any bans to be handed out. The Idea is that the system would assume you’re are better than you currently are rated. Just like any other report, no action will be taken off of just one. If you’re getting that Draven game flagged 25% of the time or you only carry at one role etc etc then you won't get the increase because as you pointed out consistency is virtue (unless you're a screw up). But yeah, it makes sense to me in theory but I agree with you that the devil is in the details and figuring out how to make this a functional system that can't be abused and isn't overly strict. Personally I'm not even sure it's possible and I'm pretty sure if it is; then it still won't be worth the development time. However, I do not see this as a "bad" Idea, just not a realistic one.

My average KDA this week is 11/3/6 with an 80% win rate. I've gone close to 15/1 most of my games. I've gone 20/0 3 times. I'm not a smurf. I'm just having a good week. Next week we will probably resume my 7/4/6 average. Why should my mmr have to skyrocket any more than it already will for a lucky streak?

Riot can see your average MMR and your W/L and decide from there if the reports should result in your MMR being boosted or not. If they do boost it erroneously, you'd just fall back to where you belong anyway.

disregardable3 votes

you'd just fall back to where you belong anyway

As in I'd go on a giant losing streak. The exact same thing Riot is trying to avoid this season with its "soft reset". It'd suck.

Hyrum Graff3 votes

I do think he has a point, though -- that there are some games where the enemy team isn't smurfing, they just happen to roflstomp, and that they'd likely get reported for 'skilled player' and get their mmr raised artificially above where it belongs. There might also be the issue of people in the post-game screen asking to be reported for skilled player so they can climb faster.

I'd propose that the 'skilled player' report option be added, but not have any direct effect upon mmr. Instead, it'll just be used internally by riot to develop better 'smurf detection systems'. When they use those systems and identify smurfs, they can selectively (and automatically) boost those accounts' mmr to where it belongs (or just increase their mmr gain per win).

better question is why are you worried about gaining mmr?

for the reason I said above. Losing streaks suck. All an increase in MMR means is a losing streak in the near future.

Only thing I'll argue is that with the new rank system limiting who you can duo with makes it hard to play with friends. I went hard last season and got to plat which personally felt great until I realized the majority of my friends list were silvers and bronze who strictly play rank like me. So either making a smurf to play with them or de ranking... I'm not saying there isn't normals but normals is taken less competitive as rank and isn't as fun.

I see how it could be frustrating but isn't better to play against a player that knows what he is doing to learn from? Continually playing against players who allow you to get away with mistakes creates bad habits that won't help. Normals is for any and every rank to team together. If I groupup with my bronze and silver friends they shouldn't have to go against plat and diamonds.

I'm not trying to learn. I'm trying to play a fun game with my friends. I don't care if I'm bad forever, I'm not an LCS player. I'm a guy who plays 1 or 2 games between work and gym.

That being said, It could be a learning experience, if the skill difference wasn't huge.

Imagine for a minute that you are into MMA, and you are pretty bad at it. If I put you in a fight with someone who is just a little better than you, maybe someone from the same gym as you, or a gym of similar skill level, you might learn something and get a little better. Improving to that fighter's level is an attainable goal. If I put you in a fight with a professional MMA fighter, you're not going to learn anything. You're just going to get mauled quickly. It isn't good for anyone.

That's what playing against plat+ players as a bronzie is like.

If I group up with my bronze and silver friends they shouldn't have to go against plat and diamonds.

Conversely, your opponents shouldn't have to face someone way outside their skill level, because you wanted to queue with lower skill friends.

Doing any activity without the desire to improve is against human nature. You are a product of this derpy "everyone is a winner" culture that has ruined the west.

Normal human: "why have you been benching 75lbs for the last 2 years?"

retarded bronzie: "Because its fun"

People like you play video games just to see flashy colors flying, lights and explosions and to give your feeble brain a brief respite from any sort of purposeful activity. You don't find enjoyment in accomplishment, progression or any of the few positive attributes of gaming. For you it is a repetitive, mindless expression of your mental weakness. When a "smurf" comes along and statters your oasis of stupidity you get butthurt because it jolts you back into the real world.

Sorry bud, but thats how it works in real life. Stupidity is punished. Smurfs ruin the fun for you, but you deserve it because of ur shitty outlook on life. Like i said earlier, get better or quit.

The desire is to win. That doesn't mean you will get upset if you lose... it simply means you will get better or stop playing checkers.

just as the OP should get better, or stop playing league instead of trying to mold it to accommodate his badness.

Uh, no. A toddler doesn't play tag to become the master of tag, the best tag player in the universe, to crush all those scrub tag players under their boot. No, they play tag to have fun. I play LoL for fun, yet I still get better. But I don't enjoy the game because I'm getting better, I don't enjoy the game only when I win. I enjoy the game because it's fun. But then there are people who seem to actively try and ruin the game. Make it not fun. Make it so that there is no point in playing it. And you seem to be one of those people.

I play for fun rarely do I really TRYHARD. I even do off meta like Leona with Sejuani bot lanes. I don't play those games to get better I play them for fun.

THIS IS A GAME.

You should always try your best to win doesn't mean you can't do off meta. I just play for fun a lot of the time. I have kids, I have a wife, I have a life. I need a break. My ACCOMPLISHMENT's do not come from a game. They come from the things I care about. To say this is a "mental weakness" is beyond idiotic. To say if they play a game for fun puts then in the "everyone is a winner"/entitlement society is also ignorant.

I work very hard to make a good home for my family and make sure my wife and my boys are happy and looked after. Just because I take a break and play some games FOR FUN you think I am "mentally weak"? You think because I play a GAME for fun I have a "shitty outlook on life"?

Everyone needs a break. Everyone needs time to relax. This is not hyperbole, this is fact. Without this you become over stressed which WILL lead to a breakdown and possible psychotic break. This can even cause a stroke.

I feel sorry for you if you think games cannot be played just for fun.

That scenario isn't quite comparable to a bronze player getting ROFL-stomped by a diamond player.

In this MMA situation, of course, if you stick an undertrained non-professional weekend gym buff up against a person who has dedicated their lives to the sport there is an unfair advantage just by virtue of this regular Joe not being at the same physical condition as this fighter.

In League, everybody is given the exact same tools at their disposal save for more efficient runes and masteries and it is all up to the players knowledge of the game to outplay his opponent. So instead of crying that it was not even possible to learn any mechanical skills or gameplay knowledge from this clearly better player, actually try watching how that Lee Sin (yea yea everyone hates Lee, I don't wanna hear it) just set up that flashy kick in to all of your teammates netting his team the ace.

This complacency to gain any kind of experience to build upon as a player somewhat speaks about you as a person. What's the point in doing something if you're not going to get better at it by doing so?

Hopefully, I'm nowhere near your MMR because I would hate to have you on my team.

Your argument is nonsense. In a fight everyone has the same tools. You've got arms and legs. Why won't you fight the world heavyweight champion? Oh, it's useless for you to fight him, because he's a shitload better than you and there is no rational reason for you to challenge him? Your argument that players can learn better mechanical skills or gameplay is the same as telling the amateur fighter to lift more and train harder because they should expect to have to fight pros.

SlamJam is right. Imagine a pro NFL lineman on a peewee football team. "I really am in 4th grade, says the 350 lb 6'6" lineman." Both teams have the same equipment, yet one of them is committing a crime if he pounces on the little kids. Not only is it not fair and ridiculous to suggest that the little peewees could "learn something" from the pro, it is sad that anyone would condone such a situation and take enjoyment out of participating or even watching such a travesty. It is abusive be definition.

But a plat player should not give up playing with his friends just because he's too good for players he plays against. You're saying we should not allow a player to play with his friends because he's better than you, but that ruins the game experience for him and his friends, either way someone will lose out on their game experience, but what side should we decide, the one player in queue against a 5 man team with a plat player who are all friends playing together?

I agree with you 100% if it makes a difference. I typically go against players who are gold+ because of the people i play with and i love doing so but ever since i played with them, ranked hasn't changed at all. I just end up not picking a champion that can carry hard enough and my team decides to not listen to calls that could potentially when us the game. Ranked is a challengers circuit that revolves around players competing in skill, the limitations are normal.

The entire argument around smurfing is that you think it's okay to manipulate the game to be more fun for you, and less fun for players who are playing naturally. The end.

Nobody cares if your having fun because your willing to ruin other peoples games so you and yours can have fun. Your fun is not more important than the fun of others, so stop trying to explain any scenario where you think explaining your circumstances will change the fact that your ruining the game for unwilling participants. Both your smurf and your main should be banned.

Live2LetDie1 votes

Where did I say ruining others fun is why I play with my friends lol your argument revolves around, "your to good to play with your own friends and shouldn't be allowed" just because you have no desire to get better at the game. I have not played a single ranked game, or even get to 30, on any account but this one. Your asking riot to ban almost every professional league player other accounts. It's to play with friends and have fun, if you aren't having fun playing against my friends and I then maybe learn why you can't stand up against us instead of crying that your paired against better players.

bahamutkaiser4 votes

Pretending to be oblivious to the plight of others doesn't change the fact that your ruining other peoples games. Nobody cares if you acknowledge what your doing to other players, if you can't even address how it affects other players, than don't expect us to listen to some ignorant excuse.

And for your information, I was 500 wins, 200 losses back in open beta, I was 4 or 5 to 1 win/loss ratio for the first one or two hundred games, and it took about 2 years for matchmaking to place me against players who can give me a fair 1/1 win/loss ratio. That's something that should happen to players only once, not every time you wanna play with your inequitable friends with absolutely no consideration for how it affects honest players.

It might not be as serious as banning accounts, but it is dishonest, it is unsportsmanly, and it is selfish. You can que normals with your regular friends on your regular account and let match making give your foe a fair appraisal of your skill and find an averagely similar mix of players to face against, not lie about your elio and pretend it's alright because other's do it with 0 regard for the new and poor players who suffer the most difficulties.

That's like asking why it's not OK for a high school basket ball star to falsify his age and join an elementary school team so he can play with his brothers... your just using the anonymity of the internet to mask your identity so you can CHEAT!, there is no other way to explain it.

I play with my Horrible siblings on my only account any time they want to play, we get matched with similarly hotch potch teams and fail wonderfully, and fairly, because it's only competitive if the foe has a fair shake, otherwise, it's abuse.

2 much sauuuce5 votes

I smurf... but I'm silver 2. So no foul right? xD

And I totally support this as well. Total complete curbstomps teach you nothing except how to lose faster than you ever thought possible. (12 minute loss ftw!!!) And I don't care if it's normals, or ARAMS, having a team of silvers/bronze/unranked against a 5 man premade of plat/diamond is NO FUN AT ALL.

And most of those players don't wanna be playing against us anyways. I've actually had the opposing team say sorry and that it was no fun for them either cuz there was no challenge unless they trolled hardcore. 5 minutes later they did some ridiculous builds like full tank Miss Fortune and ADC Amumu. It was HILLARIOUS! And it was entertaining. And we still lost but at least it was fun at that point. There was an honor fest afterwards. I wish I would have written their names down. They had such great attitudes.

Sadly they are in the minority.

Or does it hurt your feeble little brain to comprehend sportsmanship?

Knucklefist4 votes

I'm with you on that. Lets sit and think about this for a second. How does a smurf stay in bronze in the first place? Intentionally throwing. I've checked the match history of people that are clearly smurfing and you know what i found out? When they arent stomping, they are the worst player on their team. Seriously. I've looked at certain smurfs histories, and when they play (for example) top or adc they stomp, but when they have to support or jungle or anything other than getting to play the role they want, they are like 0/5/2. Stats like they practically afk, or intentionally throwing. A person doesnt go from having games with 20+ kills plus 20 assists frequently, to not having a clue going 1/6/3 frequently. FYI the smurfs are some of the most toxic people to play with sometimes. Anyone who intentionally throws games to remain in a low elo bracket so they can look like a god needs to be punished. They ban people from elo boosting. Why? Because they dont want a bronzie to sneak into gold or platinum and ruin their games till they drop. So why should someone who is clearly smurfing be treated any differently?

If you are getting 20+ kills everytime you get the role you want, and feeding or costing your team the game everytime you get stuck doing something else, you are making a choice to be bad. I'm not saying a person shouldnt be able to make an account and play with their friends who are worse than them, but they shouldnt be able to intentionally throw games and fake connection issues to remain in bronze to do it. Is riots matchmaking system so stupid that if 1 platinum 2 silvers and 2 bronzes are playing together that they cant find a similar matchup of people in queue?
I personally enjoy the extra competition every now and then, but in the same breath....its no fun when I'm support and my top laner is getting destroyed by a gold smurf who then snowballs the rest of us. I say if you can be banned for getting boosted ban the people trolling the bottom of the barrel as well. Or is it only bad when a noob ruins a "pro's" game and not the other way around? I guess we should all sit back in awe and marvel at their 40 kills in 20 minutes then honor them after the game for being so kind as to take time out their days to shit on us bronzies.

Also, I try not to make this a habit. I don't like stalking people or looking up their stats. But I did it this time. I hopped onto lolking.

You're fucking Gold V. I'm Bronze III, I know, but you are in absolutely NO way to believe you are so high and mighty. Stop pretending you're Diamond.

Keep missing the point dishits. It doesnt matter what elo i am, all that matters is that i always try to improve. Instead of trying to create an option to report players for being better than me like the OP is.

This is why i dont even bother talking to you people civilly, you will just miss the point or create a strawman to argue with. You operate at such a low logical capacity that is actually more productive to call you a dumbass and move on.
