Ryze's targeted Q offers no counterplay.

Meanwhile we have a whole MANDATORY role (marksmen) balanced around targeted damage.

I don't get why all this hate on targeted spells. Targeted spells have a drawback: short range. Just like targeted basic attacks.

I can understand that his targeted Q is quite oppressive against melee champions, but not as much as long-range champions can abuse Ryze's lack of range (and that's why he's not played at mid). But, at teamfights, how is he supposed to use his new Q? Tanks can easily block it, so the enemy carries don't even have to bother on dodging it.

Ryze's Q being a skillshot has a legitimate reason. I'm sure you've gone top lane before and dealt with his constant barrage of poke. It'll be dealing AoE damage in teamfights undoubtedly anyways

Veigar on the other hand... WHY oh WHY would they INCrease the cooldown AND make it a skillshot IF ANYTHING THEY SHOULD DECREASE THE COOLDOWN

Because once a marksman is in range to auto-attack, they are generally also in range to be jumped on by someone with a gap-closer. Though the same could apply to Ryze, Ryze tends to be a lot tankier than ADCs.

In any case, changing Ryze's Q into a skill-shot makes his gameplay less boring, and allows the Q to be stronger and longer-ranged because it can miss.

It's a good thing it's on a really low cooldown.

I guess you're supposed to spam Q on the tanks? shred those tanks like a boss

I'm actually wondering if Auto Attacks will eventually be redesigned for just that reason. The counterplay to auto attacks is the exact same as the counterplay to targeted spells - stay out of range and build defensive items.
