Oh it was a great time, where bruisers felt good in lategame. Adc's were trash early and good lategame.
Supports were crazy good earlygame but absolute trash lategame (they had no gold) and in competitive only had boots at the end of a 25 min game.
There was gold generation items, good old bankplank with avarice blade philostone heart of gold and kage's lucky pick xD.
Nobody had trinkets, and the vision war actually costed money to be fought (which indirectly nerfed gold generation and allowed level-dependant champions to be better than gold-reliant champions early-midgame cough cough adcs)
People felt tankier, yet burst was scary (dreaded DeathfireGrasp).
Burst was powerful but also came with high manacosts, and high cooldowns, which made tankiness feel much more powerful. Yes maybe the mage could burst my health hard, but after his burst he was basically useless for a large window of time and it felt balanced.
Champions didn't have billion dashes or safety nets.
% health and true damage weren't everywhere, only on a handful of mid-lategame champions 
Teamfights were not all about protecting the backline at all. There were strategic teamfight compositions with combos such as malphite Orianna, or wukong orianna; jarvan miss fortune. Fights lasted longer, and games longer in general.
Ok, people were way worse at the game that's also part why it seemed more healthy
