Ranked experience thus far...

So, when I started playing about a year and a half ago, I thought I was learning the game pretty well. So, I posted a thread asking what I could expect from ranked play at the time. (it can be viewed here: http://forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=4527844 ) I took as much of the advice as I felt prudent and did not bother attempting ranked until recently. And I got my wish of not getting placed in bronze... although...

I have to say that the experience of going through the qualifiers makes me not want to play ranked. Not because I was getting outplayed, but because in a majority of the games, I had at least one toxic player on my team. I know I'm not supposed to lay blame on other people, but I play enough team builder to know when I'm the one throwing and when I'm not.

My first qualifier: We go through the draft process and get into the game with no issues. This was a few months ago, but I remember this event quite clearly. The guy playing adc decides to wait until 6 minutes into the game to tell us he's never played adc before and only played because the other roles were taken. I do what I can, but having such an inexperienced person in the lane with me, we get curb stomped.

Second game: We win, no issues.

Third game: We win, no issues.

Fourth game: My team is outplayed in every lane, but nobody is griefing anyone else.

Fifth game: Two people get into an argument over who is playing adc during draft. The argument continues into the game and we get rekt since both of them are too busy arguing in the chat.

Sixth game: We win. My carry for the game wants to duo drop with me.

Seventh game: We call roles in draft. No arguments from anyone. "Great!" I think to myself. The captain who has not yet said a word locks in an adc. That guy is solidly outplayed by the enemy adc and becomes toxic after getting caught out of position and killed several times.

Eighth game: my adc declares "gg" after our mid lane dies at about 7:30 and insists we should ff at 20. No amount of encouragement sways them and I get very half hearted responses to my pings. Despite this, we're the one lane that is at least "not losing" and I hold out hope that maybe a good play somewhere will turn things around. My adc continues asserting that the game is over and sits in lane farming when we really need some damage during team fights.

Ninth game: My jungle and top lane are toxic this time. Each blamed the other for renekton getting fed and refused to cooperate.

Tenth game: The mid laner gets counter picked, doesn't buy any wards, feeds, then insists that everyone else "learn from this experience" while berating us and starts giving sarcastic instructions until he's annoyed the adc and the jungle into arguing with him.

60% of my games had somebody causing internal strife on our team. I tend to be a pretty positive player in normals, but this is depressing. Are all ranked games like this? I wanted a challenge. I didn't feel I could learn any more playing normals. I wanted the matchmaker to find people better than it thinks I am and throw me at them. This? This makes me want to pull my hair out. I looked up the griefers. It isnt like they were all bronze V trolls. Most were silver. I'm just staring at my screen wondering how anyone plays this if this is what we can expect.

I agree that the current select experience can be frustrating, but there's a new champion select coming out I think in the next 2 patches. It's kinda similar to Team Builder but a little more open. You can probably find it somewhere on Surrender @ 20.

Sometimes you get a ton of games in a row like that but overall the majority of your games will not be like that. Take a break from ranked for a day if you lose more than 2 games in a row, because tilt is extremely real and will just make you suffer more since you will be playing more poorly and continue the cycle of bad games and frustration.

Eh man welcome to ranked league. Just wanted to fill you in on some things assuming you are unaware. First off, congrats on silver. Just looking at your stats I think there are somethings you should know that I am very aware of. I made a list below, although the items are really in no particular order.

  1. Each year at the start of a season (season 5 ended 11/11/15 season 6 starts in a couple of months) there is a soft reset. I see you went 3-7 in your placements, which places you differently later in the season than at the beginning of a season. During the first couple months of ranked and with the soft reset, unless you go almost perfect in your placements you are going to drop in rank. Just an fyi don't be surprised if you play your promo games in jan, feb, march and drop into bronze, its pretty common.

  2. Placement matches are annoying . Don't let it get to you though.

  3. There is on average more toxicity in ranked. It is something you have to get used to and yea champ select can be pretty obnoxious at times. They are introducing a new system however in season 6 so we will see if that helps at all.

  4. A lot of people take ranked seriously, which you have to do but you also have to realize you will not win every game. You really just have to try to do your best and in some games there just won't be anything you can do. its taken me a few years to realize that each game is a separate game, and you just have to go into each game that you are going to try your best to win, and if you don't there's always the next one.

  5. Don't play ranked if you are in a bad mood, or lose a couple games in a row without taking a break. You will only continue to lose (trust me this shit has happened many many times to me).

  6. At least in the current system if you get up to 100 lp into your promo games don't be surprised if you get trolled super hard. Idk what it is, but the current match system really seems to mess with people in their promos. Don't be surprised if it takes 2-3 times to win your promos if you get to 100 lp.

  7. The only way to really figure out your true ranked elo is to play lots of games. If you are not planning to play a lot of ranked, I would suggest waiting until later in the season to play your placement matches.

  8. Ranked is really more about perseverance and learning than anything. Your rank will go up and down until you improve, but once you improve you will continue to climb the ladder. It's all about mental toughness.

  9. It looks like you just got 30 so don't sweat it too much. IP and experience only come with games played. - At least IP for runes and champs.
