League of Legends Should Not Have a Chat
Tell me, what exactly is the point of in-game chat? I have never seen it used in any cooperative way whatsoever. It's pointless, honestly-- only good for raging at your teammates or bming the enemy. Here's a Riot quote:
"Players are never banned for not communicating through chat in-game. In fact, a large portion of games are completed with very few words being said at all. If you feel you need to communicate to your team, then you should use Smart Pings. Smart Pings will allow you to communicate all vital information much more quickly than typing. Smart Ping allows the following commands to be given: On My Way, Enemy Missing (MIA), Be Careful, and Assist Me."
Pings are all a player actually needs. If two people want to talk in-game, there should be an option for them to do so privately. A player could willingly accept an invite to a chat (much like private messages already), and willingly leave if they want. I realize there is a mute option, but having to "/mute all" every game seems like a waste. The existence of the public chat fosters an unhealthy environment for competitive play, and encourages foul talk, blaming, and all other negative forms of text communication which League is so well known for. While there are a few rare instances where I can see it being helpful and fun for players, the bad outweighs the good most of the time.
