This is why I don't play meta champions.

So I decided to save up for Lissandra since purchasing runes is pretty much pointless now and when I told my friend about this she was kind enough to purchase her for me. But I was sitting here with 4000+ IP I had nothing to do with. I looked at my collection screen and noticed this L4 Zed because when you play champions in the free rotation, it doesn't let you go beyond that.

I purchased an IP Boost since i had less than 400 RP I had nothing to do with. Just a few hours ago I made it to 6300 IP and purchased Zed and I was excited to play him since I'm sick of playing Azir who has basically the same mechanics but is not even close compared to the same damage, I even have L7 with Azir and I'm tired of him, but only if I could GET IN A DAMN GAME AS HIM.

I literally just had 4 games in a row where I wanted to pick Zed and all four times were either a remake, ban, pick, or I was auto-filled as some lane I didn't choose:

  • The first time I picked Zed, I got into a game but our top laner caused us to wait 5 minutes in the loading screen but never actually connected so our team remade the game.
  • The second time I wanted to pick Zed was when I was auto filled in the top lane and our ADC insta-banned Zed when I "forgot" to pick him. (I didn't forget, I just don't want to play something "different" and people disagree with it so they ban them for no reason, someone banned Mordekaiser top one time on purpose when I was going to play Mordekaiser top and I even declared it)
  • The third time I wanted to pick Zed, the other team picked Zed and I picked Karthus because KARTHUS IS FUN, and nobody picks him... Oh and I also had last pick.
  • The fourth time I wanted to pick Zed, I was last pick AGAIN and the other team was second to pick and they insta-locked Zed before I could.

Just the other day I was wanting to play ranked as Veigar but queued up for normals instead and played like I was in ranked, it was so ironic and it flabbergasted me the amount of times I pinged and took everything too seriously without saying a word. The other team had this Teemo who was in gold and after the game we had this conversation and he asked me "why don't you play meta champs"?

Well person who played Teemo, this is your answer.

Odd. I'm a zed main and I usually get zed about any time I want him in gold. Just select him and people shouldn't ban him. The other team might, but zed has been a constant "Never bad to ban" champion since dusk blade was first released in s6. I wouldn't call him overly meta either. He's just alright, boasting one of the lowest win rates mid unfortunately.

I wouldn't let this discourage you either. Most of your anecdotes seem to stem more from cynicism than actual reality. I go zed top often as well. At most, I'll get a "zed top?" Once every like 10 tops. I just go "yeah" and people are cool with it, sorta like a confirmation that I really meant to make that pick. Enemy team picks your zed, well I mean, you just have to let that go. But I don't see him picked that often either. If your team intentionally bans zed when you want him, sometimes it may not be intentional. I'm guilty of just not looking at what champs are selected by teammates or panic banning when the timer gets too close. Or could be intentional and you just have to let those individual cases go too.

I can't speak for your experience obviously, but if I want to play zed, I'll play zed. He's ironically banned more often for me when I want to play someone else than when I want him. And I've had only a couple isolated incidents where I select zed and team bans him, and of those times, most were because I was last pick and zed was heavy meta. Just play what's fun man. And avoid karthus into zed lmao.

And completely irrelevant to the point you're making, but I have a personal problem with you saying Azir's and Zed's mechanics are the same. I think what you meant is the style of mechanics are the same in that they require precise execution or they fail. But the mechanics themselves are faaaaaaaaar different. S'all good though xD

Edit: Pro tip by the way that may fix a problem you have. If you're in lobby and someone dodges, leave the queue, wait 3-5 minutes, join again. I don't have factual evidence for this, but it seems that when you enter a queue, you get put in this pool of players that matches by ELO on your individual level. However if someone dodges, the other 3 you were with sorta stay together in this pool therefore limiting the systems ability to properly find a fitting player. Instead of matching 5 different players now, it treats you as a premade so it specifically looks for the role that was lost, but now must precisely find someone fitting that matches all 4 of your ranks, and not 4 different players that align with your individual one, if that makes sense. However, since that's much harder, it seems to resort to autofill or secondary much more in this scenario and will relegate one or more of you to another lane if it finds a suitable match for a role you were originally in. Try it out, I find it works almost every time.

You're confusing meta with popular, Zed isn't particularly good in anyway, however he has a "fun and mechanical" playstyle which attracts lots of people whether they good or bad.

Also, a Teemo asking you why you don't play meta champions? That is hilarious on so many levels.

Why do you want to play Zed though? He's almost never as useful/reliable to the team compared to a mage due to the lack of AOE and his high risk play style (for not much more reward).

He's basically a Win More champ (if your team is ahead, you can close out the game with him but you could also have done it with a mage). If you're even or behind, expect the Zed pick to cause you to get outscaled and lose.

Literally if they pick 2 hard CC champs ANYWHERE, you might as well never team fight. Split push? Well that's also not an option if their team's Top is fed (which is half the games).

I mean, a Zed God is a Zed God but otherwise in the hands of mortals... he's pretty bad...
