My Issue With Autofill

I want to preface this by saying, I don't think autofill is a bad idea. I just think that maybe it could be implemented slightly better than it currently is and I just want to share a pain point I have with the system in it's current state through a short story about what happened last queue as an example.

I queued up for jungle and mid in a normal game. I just wanted to play kindred for no particular reason. Client says average queue time is 1:30 or so, I got a game as jungle at 1 minute, picked her, whatever, good to go. lobby goes all the way down to the last person, our support, he doesn't pick and ends up dodging the lobby, go back into queue, the moment i'm in queue it pops again. The queue timer is still at like 1 minute and the average wait is still at 1:30. But I get autofilled support.

This highlights 2 small issues I have with the system:

  1. If my queue time is not above the average wait I should not have a chance to be autofilled at all. The only exception I could see to this rule is at master/challenger level when the average queue time might say 10 minutes.
  2. If I get hit by someone else dodging recently in a game where I was assigned one of the positions I wanted I should get a small grace period of maybe like 10-15 seconds where I can't be autofilled

  1. If you couldn't be autofilled below the average wait then people would keep dropping out of the queue at that point until they got matched with someone.

  2. I don't see much of an issue with this one right away, but would need to be tested thoroughly before being implemented.
