Jungle him. Get a cinderhulk and go full tank until you get comfortable using his abilities. His base damage is more than enough to impact lanes during the lane phase and he get to an almost mundo level of unkillability (is that even a word?) with the added benefit of a gap closer and dat ult do.
If you aren't comfortable using your ult to separate one person from their team as an engage tool, don't use it that way. Use it as a peel for your carries. He's an extremely rewarding champion to play if you put in the time. You can build him different ways for different team comp.
for example: your team went zed mid with a quinn top (for arguments sake) and your bot lane support is someone semi tanky, you can opt into a runic echos instead of the tank build path and go ap.
it's just a matter of playing him and getting comfortable with his abilities and how/when to use them. Same as any other champ. Don't get too discouraged. He's actually in a pretty good spot right now.
